James is talking about Trila of Tears and how this is the 1st time they have played and these guys just won't stop yelling in the audience. He finally gets mad and says SHUT THE FUCK UP, getting the whole crowd cheering. After that the guys still keep yelling, and then he says "Don't make me come down there and kick your fucking ass" arousing the crowd again. Its one of teh funniest moments ever IMO, the boot is funny, they play this bad 3 minutes of covers, including a screwed up version of "dance the night away" form VH. I don't think JP really knew it, so it came out wrong. As James said "What do look like a fucking jukebox?" And then said this has turned into spinal tap. heheheh Gotta love Labrie. Anyway When dream and James unite. Don't buy it. There are tons of people here and on on the mp.com forum who will trade for this. Might cover a belly button. On a good day. Of course she's rather petite, so she might actually use one as a nightshirt. She's making her way to the West Coast (started here in DC, going to Boston, then working west via Chicago), so those over there may want to check her out. BTW, her song "Thank You" is used under Eminem's "Stan" on the Marshall Mathers LP. SteveZ: >Whither? To the 9:30 club to see DT on Saturday. Indeed. I have also purchased my ticket for $20.50. Let me know if this makes any sense. I absolutely love James' voice. That's one of the main reasons I got into DT. Everything I've heard him sing on is fantastic. Even Explorer's Club (which didn't need him -- I'd buy anything that Bozzio and Sheehan do, even if my mom sang on it) gets me every time I listen to it. But Mullmuzzler just sounds like more of the same to me. There isn't even any songwriting I haven't heard on the disc. The Shadow Gallery-written songs sound like Shadow Gallery with James singing, and the Magellan-written songs sound like Explorers Club, without Bozzio and Sheehan (and Petrucci, and Sherinian, etc...). Not that it's bad by any stretch, but it wasn't new to me. LTE sounds the same way to me. John, Mike, and Jordan playing just like John, Mike, and Jordan. Phenomenal stuff, and as above, I'll buy anything that Tony Levin's on, but as much as I enjoy listening to it, it didn't really break any new ground to my ears. On the other hand, Transatlantic is a real break from tradition for Mike. Sure, three of the originals are Neal Morse's babies, and they definitely have that Spock's sound, but with Roine and Pete, and especially Mike, there's added flavor there. The same holds, I think, for Platypus. With the possible exception of Ty, I get the feeling that these guys are playing stuff they like to play, but don't get a chance to do outside their bands. Anyway, with people starting to talk about James mulling (sorry :) another solo project, I would love to hear something that's a departure from the Magna Carta sound. I don't know what, but it would be cool to hear what else he can do. Now that I'm thinking about Matheos' solo stuff again (man, now I wish I brought that stuff to work today), that's what I think a solo album, or side project, should be -- all the other tricks an artist has up his sleeve, that don't get a chance to be represented in his main band. Of course, that's just me, and I'm sure I'll enjoy anything these guys choose to release. -d NP: Aenglagaard/Epilog ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Digital Man \|/ ____ \|/ "640 K ought to be enough email_address_removed "@'/ ,. \`@" memory for everyone." -Gates email_address_removed /_| \__/ |_\ "He won't need a bed http://www.dreamt.org/d-man \__U_/ He's a digital man" -Peart ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Aug 2000 11:28:35 -0700 From: David Hans Plotkin To: "'ytsejam@torchsong.com'" Subject: SCARRED RECORDS / RYAN WHITAKER Message-ID: Could someone please email me the new web address of Scarred Records, I lost the link and it's no longer at the "focusin" site. What I can say is that I picked up 2 discs at the same time not long ago... a Garbage cd and the new Planet X disc. I bought the Garbage album because I want to start figuring out which parts of pop music I dig, and how I can use them... the same way any Shredi does with his Cacophony and Malmsteen albums. I have been a Sting fan forever... I like Foo Fighters... but Garbage is one of those bands I was always like "They're tight, but I don't know if there's anything going on there..." Anyways, Planet X, which the Shredi handbook would insist is a winner just pales in comparison. That's fucking sick. I bought an album on which the musicianship is adequate but not stunning, except for the vocals which are certainly excellent... and I bought an album from 3 guys who I KNOW are monsters... MacAlpine who I have been listening to for over a decade, Donati, who is on my short list of ultimate drummers, and Derek, whose writing and vibe are untouchable, IMO. Planet X's new album nearly put me to sleep. Everything is solid, but nothing seems alive! To date, I have not been nearly as impacted by Virgil's album playing as I have by Mangini, Bozzio, Nick from Spock's, etc. The only reason I know he rules is from his videos and from the 2 times I've seen him. MacAlpine shocked me... shocked because I didn't care about what he was playing! I need to listen to it a lot more and see if I was missing anything, but the compositions were pretty bland, with a few exceptions. And then there was this Garbage album, which yesterday on a whim I decided to play along with, and was able to learn in its entirety in one listen. That puts things into perspective, I must say. Certainly I have not strayed from the teachings of my Shredi mentors... I mean, I'm gonna drive from Chicago to see fuckin' Bumblefoot in Jersey a week from Thursday, and the power behind that band is Ron *Yoda* Thal. But now based on Mike Patrick's review I'm wondering if I'm gonna flip out over the new Chromakey. I have a feeling it's perfect for me. How much are ya willing to spend? Not to sound like a used car salesman (Or worse yet...a Guitar Center salesman), but even the little amps vary from Pignose quality to Unbelievable! I don't know what the rate is these days, but if you can find yourself a Mesa Boogie DC series combo amp, you'll be plenty set for both dorm room jammin' and gigging. I think it was a DC-10 that I played through that sounded pretty damn nice. The price range was somewhre around $800-$1100 I believe. > What wattage should I be looking for? Its not going > to be really loud all the time, but I don't want to > get a cheap practice amp that I can't turn up. Is 10W > enough? More or less? After 5 years of training in the shredi arts, I have grown a distaste for my Crate GX-20M 20 watt solid state practice amp. I've tried to use it in a band setting, and it gets overwhelmed by the drums alone. Adding a bass and a second guitar to the mix, and the only way I could hear any distinct sounds (cranked at 10, mind you) was by putting my head right in front of it! But it sufficed for dorm living. I'm still using it in my apartment, but now that I have a Rocktron Chameleon making love to my guitar signal, it's a little more bearable. :) If you're going to spend no more than say, $300 on the amp, Peavey's always been relatively good. There was an amp very similar to my Crate that shared the same features as my crate, but had two 8" (?) speakers instead of one 10" speaker...for true chorusing, I'd assume. If you can shell it out, the DC would satisfy you, I'm sure. Like, totally. ~Eckie decided to take it easy on everybody's sarcasmo detector software this time ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 01 Aug 2000 20:21:48 +0200 From: CyberDuke To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: DT/Zappa/Queen Message-ID: I waited and waited, but that damn Bulgarian jammer won't write the story for the DT concert in Budapest on 19-th July. With 2 friends of mine we did some few months downloading and now we have maybe 4-5 CDs with mp3s of it. :) There is some awesome stuff there, like complete Apostrophe played on one gig, and oh my God, what a performance. Also there's this cool tune "Clowns on Velvet" played live with AL DIMEOLA. :) Zappa and Al, who would've thought. :) Al shreds really good on it in his usual electric flamenco style. On another note, while surfin' TV channels I bump on familiar tune. WE WILL ROCK YOU. :) VERY cool cover, FIVE featuring Queen. Who are these guys FIVE? They seem like just another Backstreet clone. But I must say they sang the song pretty good. Very cool cover indeed, enriched a lil' bit, but the main vibe of the song is kept. I'll look up for the mp3 these days. And finally, what's with the new MacAlpine album? I heard praises on it, but not from a metal community. :) I was told it's completely unlike his older stuff, but a bit of jazz rock.
