'This is how metal is supposed to sound like' is my reaction at that time. I already liked Rush, so it crossed my mind that "Perhaps this kind of music could be improved if one takes some of Rush's style and mix it with Metallica's style, making a new style of music." Funny, I used to call this idea "art metal" simply because to me Rush was art rock and Metallica was, uhm, metal. I've never heard the term progressive rock then, perhaps because I live in Indonesia and it was Before World Wide Web. The only source of info are students studying abroad, and with much inaccuracy or distortion. When AJFA and Megadeths's Rust in Peace came out, I thought "Wow, perhaps my idea of art metal is not so ridiculous after all." Then I heard Death's Human, and Cynic's Focus, and was blown away. "This is art metal!", I thought, smiling for days. Then I discovered DT's IaW and got quite confused. "This is somewhere between my idea of art metal and that band called Toto," I thought. Then I discovered that they are called progressive metal. Hmm. Then I joined Ytsejam and became more and more confused, he he he. I used to hate computers back in high school. We were forced to learn BASIC and D-BASE, and it was awful. I think I first use Windows around 92 or 93 and thought, "Wow, this is OK. Perhaps I could start to like using computers now." A few months later I tried a Macintosh, and never ever looked back since, he he he. I think it's not unlike music, we like some, we hate some, and most of the times we simply don't give a fuck about what else is available out there. -- pluki7-4290051-8498006 "Ma I erofereht, etacinrof I." ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Jul 2000 21:16:08 +0700 From: Adrian K Tunggono To: ~status seekers Subject: Power Macintosh G4 Cube Message-ID: by the way, has anyone else seen the new G4 Cube? now that is cool! http://www.apple.com/powermaccube/ -- pluki7-4290051-8498006 "Ma I erofereht, etacinrof I." ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Jul 2000 21:28:38 +0700 From: Adrian K Tunggono To: ~status seekers Subject: sig Message-ID: to Kurt or Al or anyone else who'd like a new signature, here's a good one: > ...I thought PROG fans were open-minded? -from Chris Elder in digest 5556 -- pluki7-4290051-8498006 "Ma I erofereht, etacinrof I." ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Jul 2000 10:32:15 EDT From: email_address_removed To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Re: Where to buy tickets.... I dunno bout Connect, that's the show I won't be attending. My thoughts on DT's keyboardist(s). Jordan is by far, my favorite. Incredible talent, I think his music fits in with the band like a new pair of shoes. It all seems to match like a jigsaw puzzle. There is not one spot on SFAM where I think, "I'd play something different there.....if I were him." Derek is also great, and I think where DT was on FII and the tour, he fit in well. He did have the whole rockstar thing down, which is funny, because you watch a show from the Awake tour, and he looks like death just warmed over. (5 Years In A Livetime Awake tour clips.....). Kevin was absolutely wonderful in the band, I wouldn't complain if he would have stayed. Wasn't this topic banned? Yep, aside from the fact that Queensryche may or may not belong to the genre if you want to be picky about it. People are listing the oldschool progrock bands like King Crimson because they directly influenced bands that were later to create progmetal. Since Dream Theater is a progmetal band, and not a progrock band, it sort of defeats the purpose of arguments of that nature. Chris "D-Man" Merlo put Metallica's "And Justice For All..." album up on the definition chopping block. He's right, it does have most of the elements that are 'required' for membership into the progmetal category. BUT, there is another method of categorization that takes precedence in many instances. That's categorization by past-association. If a band was previously lumped into another category, it takes a lot of doing to get them *out* of said category. Metallica, from the get-go, was a thrash-metal band. They became more progressive, but they were still a thrash-metal band to the world, and would have continued to be unless they totally (and I mean totally) overhauled their sound, which they didn't. Not in the '80s at any rate. (Even the '90s version of Metallica is still generally considered to be thrash-metal...or various four-letter words...) Of course, it could also be argued that Metallica was never a progmetal band because they abstained from puffy silk pirate shirts. This is the perception that many people had that night and it is unfortunate for James that people think that. The way it went down (I talked to some of the band members, including James, after the show that night) was this: The club guy and/or fire marshall told Mike P. before the show that they would have to end the night early (due to too many people on the main floor, or too many people on the stairs, or some BS like that). He said no way, they were going to play their full set like planned, period. (Probably in much livelier language than that though ;-). I don't think James even knew about this situation before they took the stage. At about 9:30 when James went off stage during an instrumental break, the club's security detained him and prevented him from retaking the stage. I guess they figured that without the lead singer the rest of the band would exit as well. But as you know they didn't. Trust you me, James and the rest of the band were really pissed at the situation, but James couldn't retake the stage because the club physically blocked him from doing so. I've spoken to James a few times after shows and what not, and he has always been more than nice to me and every one else in the room. He's also quite funny (the second night of shows at the Palace went off well and after the concert the club was reopened for a dance party...James had some pretty comments about all the guys in the "big pants" now invading the club. ;-) -- ~Michael Kizer < email_address_removed > < ICQ # 2070538 > "Enter ivory gates through midnight skies..." ~ http://www.ivorygate.com >>> Fates Warning ~ Island In The Stream <<< >>> Dream Theater and Kevin Moore "Unofficial" Song Books <<< >>> Underground Internet Radio at: http://www.ytseradio.com <<< ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Jul 2000 17:39:47 EDT From: email_address_removed To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Re: James can be a twaize.
