You have to remember that with bands names like Metallica and Megadeth its kind of implying that your band is a metal band. Now I know a name is just a label, but it would come across as very audacious to a hardcore metal fan for a band to be playing Load and Reload style material and calling it metal. Kind of like the way I feel about people who call Moby's CD new blues. It may be good songs, but it aint the blues. Whilst Skadz is away, might as well start up a Kirk Hammett thread. >Um, ever listen to his guitar work on the song "One"? I mean, c'mon. Try and >tell me that his guitar work isn't great in that song. Its true that a lot of Kirk's stuff sounds pretty good, but any schmo can sound good. For someone who is supposedly number 1 metal player in the world, to be doing stuff as unoriginal and cliched as that, is saying something. And consider that, for example on the black album, he had like a year, in which to record 8 solos. Apparantly, he didn't write a lot of them, and he had a whole army of guitars with which to use. Now how many players, just on the Ytsejam, would be able to do a better job than he did, given so much. I would say there would be quite a few. Admittadly the solo from One is not the easiest thing to pull off, and from what I've heard Kirk only did it in half an hour, but everyone has good days, and live Kirk just can't repeat it. Despite what Ive just said, I do like what Metallica do, and I think they've always been an incredibly strong band (including Load and Reload), but they just need to be seen in the right perspective. On a different note, I heard about a band called Fozzy (as in Fozzy Osbourne) yesterday, which is a side project of Stuck Mojo members and renowned celebrity Dream Theater supporter, Chris Jericho. Does anyone know anything about the band, I always like an Ozzy tribute. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Jul 2000 02:24:26 EDT From: email_address_removed To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Re: YTSEJAM digest 5539 Message-ID: In a message dated 7/10/00 1:21:22 AM Eastern Daylight Time, ytsejam@torchsong.com writes: << > Pop? You tell *me* what happened. >> First of all, if you want to say they went pop, then this question has nothing to do with that. It's of a completely different nature. And, what happened was that they wrote 2 different songs. One was called "And Justice For All" which is arguably one of them most complex things they ever wrote. The other is "Whereever I May Roam" which whis is a different song that is not as comples but has great build up in it's choruses and is also a terrific song IMO. I wouldn't call either song "pop." Pop is Mariah Carey, Everclear, Brittney Spears. Ask a listener of a top 40 station to listen to "Wherever I May Roam" and they're not gonna be a hapy camper. And your question is not at all different from saying "Metrolipolis pt 1" and "Anna Lee" or something like that. -mike C. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Jul 2000 02:27:43 EDT From: email_address_removed To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Re: YTSEJAM digest 5539 Message-ID: Digital Man: << Yeah, that's what I meant. And perhaps they should push themsleves a lot more than they may have done lately. I'd love to see a new album that is a lot more complex than their more recent stuff. How do you know? Maybe he would of got into the country/southern feel just as James Hetfield. Yeah, with melodic bass lines, but there is no guarantee that the only way for Metallica is this prog thing. I think the newer albums actually connect with Kill em All in the sense that both Kill and the Load shit is based around grooves, and not technically and musically exciting stuff. But I also think that Hetfield has in no means sold out. If you listen to what the guy is into, if you know how much he hated playing And Justice For All live, if you listen to his newer lyrics, you can tell that James Hetfield is playing from his heart more than ever!!!! He is just into the groove thing, and not the prog thing anymore. Also, Jaymz's new vocal style also proves him to be a "from the heart" musician. I mean, you have the right not to like it, but it is light years away from the "yelling in key" we can hear on Metallica's classic albums. James still cares about it, but hell, he is into Nick Cave, Corrosion of Conformity, Alice in Chains, country shit, not Rush and Marillion. Take that into account. Does anyone really think that James, the main riffman sits down and thinks "I wonder if this new riff of mine will sell enough copies so I can buy another house"?? Come on....... Lars is a different question, I agree that he became a total (and admitted) money bitch. But I think that his direct impact on the music is no longer as big as the frontman's is. Anyway, I am expecting a lot from Metallica in the future, I think they are a promising new band. Oh, and by the way I saw them one year ago in Budapest. They played fantastic. They nailed Fight Fire With Fire right after One. They started with Breadfan, then into Puppets, then The Thing That should Not be. The guys ripped our heads off. They also played accurately. ************************* One more thaught: I am getting a feel that being anti-Metallica is becoming a growing TREND. ************************* cheers, Tibor ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Jul 2000 10:20:48 +0200 From: Andreas Skarin - SDTS To: Ytsejam Subject: Die evil thread, DIE! Remember that DT had about 2+ hours worth of music written and demoed by the time they started recording and they had to pick about half of that (although, if I recall correctly, there were even some intentions on the band's part to make it a double album since they had so much stuff). Now some of the material was played live long before the album was recorded, which probably indicates it was written without label pressure when they were still thinking they could release what they wanted (Peruvian Skies, LITS, BMS/HK, TAMP, JLMB). Then they were "forced" to write stuff like Anna Lee, YNM (which they had wanted to throw out until the label got Desmond Child to "fix" it), etc. What I'm trying to say is that there's a lot of material written in that period that didn't make the album due to label interference and was replaced by weaker stuff. IMHO if they'd put Raise The Knife, Where Are You Now, Speak To Me, The Way It Used To Be, etc. on instead of the (IMHO) more boring mellow tracks the album would have turned out better and more to the band's liking as well. About half the album has a really cool spacey vibe with songs like NM, HK, LITS, ToT, PS and some of the other songs just don't seem to fit.
