Giacomini" To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Re: Megadeth Without Marty Message-ID: I've read a couple of articles regarding this issue... One was about Marty, and how he'd gotten sick of playing heavy metal, and since he was getting more and more into pop music and bands like Garbage (he mentioned others, but Garbage's the only one I remember), he felt like recording a pop-oriented album, with songs that would appeal to more people (that is, that would sell more records) than the stuff he did with Megadeth... And he said that if people considered that selling out, so be it... That was the reason he gave for leaving Megadeth... The second was with Dave, and he said the reason why the band did an album like "Risk" was to try and "break the barrier that the music industry presents to those bands who don't sound like Hanson" (that's not the exact quote, I'm retranslating that)... And as they didn't reach their goal, the new album will be similar to RIP and their old stuff, more agressive and heavier... He also says Al has fit perfectly into the band, that they have already finished recording 8 tracks, that other 6 are on the way, and that the guitar work is very good... Both of them mentioned that Marty's exit of the band was friendly... MASK had the best toys. How about the Inhumanoids? THOSE were some kick ass toys! There were 3 bad guys that had to be like, a foot tall. One was a plant type guy, I think the 2nd was a volcanic-themed one, and (the best) one had a cow's skull for his head, and you could open up his ribcage to trap the good guys in. GI Joe was classic. I remember I had the Cobra base (anyone remember the movie with Sargent Slaughter? They also fucked up Cobra Commander and made him turn into a giant snake). And who could forget DINO RIDERS! The huge T Rex with all these cool missle launchers on it...ahhh brings me back to my pre-adolecent days :-). Wile I'm on a roll, anyone remember Captain N? It was made up of various Nintendo characters, and starred the aformentioned Captain, with his pet dog, Duke, and a Nintendo controller strapped to his belt, and the Zapper gun for a weapon. Kid Icarus was on there, so was Mega Man. The bad guys were Mother Brain (from Metroid), this eggplant guy, and King Hippo from Punchout (another great game). The Mario Bros. show with Captain Lou Albano as Mario was awsome too. Which is understandable, considering that it's a really weird name for a band that plays what they play. I understand people liking that kind of catchy hard rock stuff... but they haven't been a particularly heavy band... they've been getting lighter and lighter, but without making the changes that are sort of required to make lighter music sound cool. > He also stated that "Megadeth never made the commitment I wanted to being > more mainstream" As in "shit or get off the pot." They're in a no-man's land right now. They are writing what was essentially a transitional form of metal, from the late 80's thrash sound to what they feel could sell now. But they're not going all the way. It's like they know they'd have to deal with the same sellout comments that Metallica gets, but they know that fewer people like Mustaine's voice than do Hettfield's. What I won't sit back and deal with is people saying this is all Marty's fault. Look where he came from. Hawaii, Cacophony, Dragon's Kiss... he was a really psychotic player, with all manner of pointy "metal" guitars. He knows how to write, play, and appreciate heavy music. Mustaine himself made the comments about it being a business, and wanting to make more money, and write more commercial tunes. He said that on MTV in an interview on some farm in Phoenix. And the thing isn't that they're writing lighter music. I love a lot of music that's not remotely metal. I have several albums that I've been embarrassed to hear played in elevators, store sound systems and "on hold" music. The problem is that what they're writing now means so little and it's stylistically weak. It's cool to disagree... I know I'm not speaking for everyone... but to me it doesn't sound like there's ANY effort being put into Megadeth albums. It's SO bland and boring. That's never been Friedman. > and that "They'll be able to make better Megadeth music > without me." Interestingly enough, when asked who he thought was creating > inspiring music, his answer was "Goo Goo Dolls, Garbage, and Fastball." I > think we can safely arrive at the answer that yes, Marty was responsible for > Megadeth's style changing (Although probably not solely him) Why is it a big deal that a guy like Marty would be into a band like Garbage? It's so sad when people are so pompous as to actually believe in the Manowar motto of "if you're not into metal, you are not my friend." Some of you would be in for a real life lesson if you saw what some of your favorite musicians listen to. And again, I defy you to tell me that a new member of Megadeth is going to redirect the band. Friedman had about as much control over Megadeth as I do. He was an employee, not a member of the board. As for Megadeth making a heavier album, anything's possible. It's possible that I may one day be a Cubs fan. But I'd recommend placing your bets elsewhere. > From: email_address_removed > Subject: Re: Al in 'deth > > > Lastly, it's just plain SILLY to say "If he can play what he > > played with Savatage, that RIP stuff will be a breeze." Repeat after me: "It's okay to like simple music. Music doesn't have to be complex to be cool." Nothing Sav ever wrote is nearly as challenging as RIP. I don't recall ever saying that I didn't love Savatage since I was a little kid. I would say that IMO everything they've done post Criss is crap, even though I know a lot of you love it. That's cool. I don't mean to say that I'm some kind of authority... listen to what grabs your ear, and why pay attention to what someone else says about it. People who can't handle contradicting opinions are likely people who are afraid to let a friend find out that they own a Beastie Boys album or a Sarah McLachlan album. > > player... Don't get me wrong, I'm not a > huge Al fan, but you're making Marty out to be a god and he ain't. I'm not making Marty out to be a god. But I would have to say I am at LEAST as on top of this subject as anyone else on the list. I've been a Friedmaniac for 12 years. Friedman IS a genius player. I know this. I have the music and the footage to back up my assertion. He is absolutely a unique player. Pitrelli is a GREAT player, and does have tons of chops. He will absolutely learn Marty's licks and play them well. But he won't sound the same, and he would never have come up with them on his own. Pitrelli is a working man's guitarist. SO many guitarists try to sound like Friedman. I've never heard of anyone trying to sound like Pitrelli. They've been out there about the same amount of time. What's your explanation? > > for the Practicing Musician's label... but he doesn't have a SPARK of what > > Marty had... until Marty Friedman got on the $$$ bandwagon and started > > playing pop music in a band named after a genocide-like million person > > That's BS. It's not like the band got all pop and he didn't like it so he > left. I read an interview with him about his current tastes of music, and it > was all POP CRAP... I mean MADONNA was on the list!!! C'mon! Grow up. Pop does not automatically equate to crap. Furthermore, I clearly stated that Friedman took the sell out route with the rest of the band. What you need to realize is that just because it's metal does not make it good, and just because it's not metal does not make it bad. There is good and bad in every style of music. There is more musicianship on some Madonna songs than on some Savatage songs. Great players can make music that you don't like. That doesn't mean that it's bad music and it doesn't mean that they're bad players. Janet Jackson had a bassist that would TEAR Myung a new bunghole. Although I wasn't too fond of True Obsession, I think Scenes and Introduction are the best two to point out that Marty is and never has been "all about metal." His neo-classical shred throughout alot of his older Cacophony and Dragon's Kiss works are dazzling and aggressive enough to TKO Mike Tyson. And I think that stuff in particular tends to (no offense) suck a rhino horn. Technically brilliant, musically confusing enough to make Rosie O'Donnel join the NRA. Scenes and Introduction, however, take you to that nice, warm grassy meadow where the slender, playful, wooly sheep prance about you so alluringly. You look around to make sure no one's watching before you reach out and caress one until... um. They're just great albums. :) -- KorgX3 reminds Chris to quit forgetting them. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 03 Jul 2000 23:40:29 -0400 From: "Carlos A. Guitar Feedback: The taps Steve and Joe are doing are harmonics, I'm guessing you saw the tap stuff Joe did in "Flying In The Blue Dream", he hits a note and sustains it with a harmonic, then it starts feeding back. After "Answers", is a perfect example of how placement of the guitar can achieve feedback tones. Steve moves around the stage just sustaining feedback notes, he only flubs it once when the note doesn't change! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Jul 2000 12:04:44 +0200 From: "Marko Randjelovic" To: Subject: Re: Broadening you horizons?
