I'll tell ya what, I'm glad *I'm* not his daughter. If five or six years (or however long it's been) of hindsight have taught me anything, it's this: Grunge taking off wasn't Kurt Cobain's fault, and it dying off didn't have anything to do with Kurt Cobain killing himself. If MTV hadn't picked Cobain as their poster child for The Next Thing, they might have picked Bob Jones from Portland, or Ed Simpson from Boise, and the Seattle Sound would merely have been the Idaho sound, or something. And some amazing vocalist named Mike Smith would be churning out solo albums of acoustic ballads, while Chris Cornell shows up for the night shift at Starbucks. The movie Singles would have had the exact same dialogue, and the exact same lead actors, but it would have taken place in a different college town. Layne Staley would still be in rehab (or dead by now); the only difference is that you wouldn't care. And the pointy-hairs at MTV would be just as rich and none the wiser. They laughed all the way to the bank once they realized that they had hitched their star to a manic-depressive. They didn't even have to script the downfall; they got to watch Kurt Loder report it like the rest of us (save the Park Ave. townhouse with the leather couches, the maid named Maria, and the $250 flannel shirt from Macy's). Seven Mary Three barely had time to say "What the..." when the suits started pushing Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails at us. (You still have your Downward Spiral t-shirt? Or even the CD?) Kurt Cobain was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and he wound up dead. Either way, there wasn't a chance in hell of Bon Jovi, Trixter, Poison, or even our beloved Dream Theater of selling more than a couple hundred copies per outlet of *anything*, once MTV decided that heavy music was over. If you want to place blame, don't start in Seattle. Start right here in the Big Apple, at MTV headquarters. --- > Date: Fri, 2 Jun 2000 22:28:34 +0200 > From: "Mark Bredius" > Subject: Two new Chroma Key sound clips! > > As a reminder, there are only ten days left to pre-order > your signed copy of "You Go Now"! I'd say that because of the inherent differences between cat5 cable and guitar cable, no. The reason network cable can be twisted in the first place is because inside the rubber is a whole bunch of smaller wires. The reason I think guitar cable can't be twisted is because inside it are only TWO tiny cables, one carrying a positive signal and the other carrying a negative signal. As such, i don't think it would do much for interference > to twist them. > But I could be wrong here; I'm not a physicist. Exactly backwards, unfortunately. :-) The fact that it's only two wires is the reason twisting works; think of the wire as a really long, narrow loop antenna. Put it in some sort of interfering field, and it works pretty well as one. Twist it, and now you have a whole series of little loop antennas*, but each one sees the opposite field to the next one, and they cancel each other out. Of course, the field won't be perfectly uniform, so there'll still be some noise, but it could help. The "magic number" I've heard for cable-twisting-for-noise-reduction (at audio freqencies, anyway) is about 1 twist per inch; the benefits drop off pretty quickly after that. * - not really, since they don't connect at the crossings, but it was an easy way to say it. Anyway, if I remember the original post from last week, it was someone's guitar setup picking up AM radio stations. That actually means that some of the circuitry somewhere (amp, effects box, etc) is recieving the AM transmission and decoding it just like a radio would (the air-wave AM transmission isn't at audio frequencies). I don't know if twisting cables will help much for this, as it could be only one of the wires picking it up... think about what most AM/FM/CB/etc radio antennas you've seen look like... they only connect at one end. But, it might work. Hard to know without seeing the whole problem. --Jay "good luck, noise & interference problems usually suck."
