"An unwanted copy"!!! Good lord, I haven't laughed that hard since James wore the "Puffy Pirate Shirt" at Irving Plaza in May of '97. ;) Back into lurk mode, I s'pose. scarred2112 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 May 2000 17:19:45 +0600 From: Abu Shams Ahmed To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Joe Satch Question Message-ID: Hi All.... Just got the Engines of Creation from Satch. As before, he just blew me away. Now, I have a question for you Guitar Guru's in the list....In Power Cosmic II, the main riff - is it done by sweep picking or by two handed tapping (a la Mystical potato head, Stu Hamm stuff). At first I thought it was sweep but now that I listen to it more... it seems more like some two handed shit. Those who haven't heard it yet ....Joe's gone Techno. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 May 2000 08:31:54 EDT From: email_address_removed To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: maddening thoughts (boo!) Message-ID: I just got a few discs in the mail. Preliminary thoughts: Jag Panzer - TTTT Hey, this sounds pretty good. I have to say that this disc blows the past two away. It doesn't sound cheesy at all, which is a fear I had for such a "concept." Thank god for no "Nightfall in Middle-Earth" narration. I think I am going to need more time to digest this one. Opeth - Still Life The first song scared me with the goat vox, but then things chilled out and I started digging it, man. (Scooby Doo, where are you) I need more time on this one, too. Royal Hunt - Paradox I didn't realize I had already heard pretty much this whole cd since I have the double live cd. Doesn't sound too different from the live album, really. I should have bought Moving Target I guess. DC Cooper rules, though those topless pictures, them I could do without. Platypus - Ice Cycles The opposite of synergy. More is less. Subtraction by addition. Whatever. Platypus doesn't suck, but they are thisclose to forming a vaccuum. Ty, stick with Doug. Please. Stratovarius - Infinite /me cues Droopy the dog: You know what? This is exciting. Why do I keep buying this shit? It's not bad. It's not good. It's a product. A brand name. You know what you are getting. Bah. Bad cd buyer, bad cd buyer. By the way, that Jag Panzer artwork sure isn't going to sell any records in this neighborhood :-( Kevin ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 May 2000 07:50:55 -0700 (PDT) From: rob denni To: ytsejam Subject: Who Message-ID: I'm a big Who fan, and got to see them on the first of their last tours (81 or 82). I liked Tommy when it first came out because it was the first time I got to see them play. The album is tremendous, but I feel the movie didn't do the story justice. I can't remember the director's name, but I don't think he was the best choice. He also directed a movie on Mahler which was God awful. I haven't seen the Tommy musical, but from what I've seen, I think it represents the story the way it was meant to be (well at least Townsend said so). =====

I definately want in on this. -On Woodstock- Try and catch VH1's new 'Rock Story' show. It is incredible, far better than behind the music. And that show is great. Anyway they did a piece on violent concerts, and spent 15 mins on Woodstock '99. Everthing was sooo expensive, everyone was out of money long before Sunday nights show. So Limp Bizkit just through gasoline on the fire. $5 for 1 bottled water? Not that I condone violence(esp. at a show about peace) but the promoters got what they deserved. Instead of making a buttload of money off millions of kids, they ended up losing money in damage. -side note- (more on MP3s) I believe that it depends on what program and how you convert the .wav's as to the pop. I've got a few,(the Woodstock full performance shows) that sound incredible. No pops, no distortion, nadda. Not sure how they were done though. -What does everyone think of the CD price fixing supposedly being over?- -chris ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 May 2000 10:36:27 PDT From: "Partha Mukhopadhyay" To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: pain in 5/8ths (and 5/12ths) (all at the same time) Message-ID: >There was also a phone call between Devin and Fredrik >Thorendal of >Meshuggah who have both expressed interest >in a possible collaboration and >hope to pursue that >possibility when their schedules allow. It was my second ventre into the "past Dream Theater" prog. My first was Shadow Gallery's Carved in Stone (which I was disappointed with then but have come to love now) and I really thought that Dream Theater was the end-all. But I found Manifesto for Futurism and it saved me because I love every track on there with the exception of Hills of Memory because it makes me think of U2. So I can owe my vault into buying cds that you cant find in NRM's to Dali's Dilemma. :-) But to what I actually wanted to post about. Is the new Ayreon album out? If not, when and where can I get it when it comes out? If so, where can I get it? Amen to that! > Every one of Steve's records is just another stroke of > genius and creativity.. I can't wait for his next album. How far can he go? When Vai will experience lack of creativity as most of the old timers? :) Jethro Tull, U2 - some of my all time fave bands, the music they make now makes NOTHING to me. It's garbage, in case of JT the music isn't interesting anymore, the creativity is gone. It's fairly good for the genre they play, but something is terribly missing. I don't think any sain old JT fan would like their new stuff. BUT, JT and U2 will always remain gods for me. > who else would record a cat having an orgasm? Hmmm, which song would that be? > Frank Zappa hired him for Christ's sakes, you don't even have > to listen to Steve's music to know he's a creative as hell he-he, I like this one. :) Ah, ... Zappa! sniff > Jiboom does have a lot of SRV inspired pieces, but there are > also millions of Vai-Isms in the song. Definitely. This song is really what is says it is HAT TIP TO SRV! Whole sone ig pretty Vaish, except that main theme intro speed of light solo, which is obviously inspired by those Scuttlin' Buttlin' kinda tunes (lol, can't recall exact name of the SRV song) And the press conference in Sofia Vai said that he wanted to do such a song, but of course also "MORE IN MY OWN MANNER". Perfect tribute to SRV, original AND paying respct to SRV too. Actually for me the biggest similarity with SRV in the song is those crazy funky guitar chords kicking during the Mangini madness. THAT is SRV chording. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 May 2000 15:32:34 -0500 (CDT) From: Jay Omega To: Just Words Subject: Ayreon and the Cali Guitar Trio Message-ID: On Sat, 20 May 2000 email_address_removed wrote: > But to what I actually wanted to post about. Infos at www.ghostland.com and www.insideoutmusic.com You should be able to buy it from most of the usual online sources (Laser's Edge, etc). Also, someone mentioned the California Guitar Trio a day or so ago... if you dig them, you need to check out the Robert Fripp String Quintet, as well. It's the C.G.T., plus Fripp on electric guitar and Trey Gunn on Grand Stick. --Jay "mentions a 'grand stick' while listening to..."
