Subjectively speaking, I liked the lighter stuff up to Awake but from FII on IMHO they started writing "ballads" that sounded too much like other bands (HY/Sting, Anna Lee/Queen, TSCO/Pink Floyd) while I found the earlier mellow efforts much more unique and emotional (WFS, S-DV, IF). Judging from the poll, however, some fans also dislike the earlier mellow stuff. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 May 2000 16:34:50 -0400 (EDT) From: Andrew Coutermarsh To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: TLF Recording from LiT Message-ID: Well, I tried. I have some good news and bad news, though. The good news is that I got a relatively clean recording of this song off of my video. The BAD news is that I had forgotten that every time I plug my VCR and my computer into an audio source together, they create a nasty ground loop that I've never been able to get rid of (it does it with any other powered source, too, such as my N64 or anything like that - doesn't do it with my CD player, though... Can't figure that shit out). If you're still interested in listening to this version of the song (even with a low Bb hum), you're welcome to do it at: http://cout.dhs.org/tlf-lit.mp3 Note that it's not up as I'm typing this - I still have to work on the wav file (maybe I can get some of that hum out of there, at least in the quieter parts), but if you can't download it, try a little bit later. ------------------------------------------------- Andrew Coutermarsh email_address_removed http://cout.dhs.org/ Cloak on IRC ICQ: 2513441 ------------------------------------------------- The only stupid question is the one that is never asked, except maybe "Don't you think it's about time you audited my tax return?" or "But officer, isn't it morally wrong to give me a warning when, in fact, I was speeding?" ------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 May 2000 16:48:47 -0400 From: "Jason Birzer" To: Subject: Audio stuff (PC - Stereo) Message-ID: >Since the Dukester's more than likely dealing with 3.5 mm stereo >phone plugs at the sound card, he's first going to deal with the >transformation to RCA plugs. Anyone have a sample so I can figure out what > album to get? Jadis are a band who've been around in a number of forms since the mid-80's tho I've only really heard about them over the last 2 years, due to coverage in certain fanzines I read. After I'd caught them live a couple of times, I fell in love with Gary's Chandler guitar playing and the keys. The music is fairly lightwight prog, with songs about relationships and stuff, but the instrumental breaks are great and the guys can really play. Currently they are composed of Gary Chandler - Guitars Stevie Christey - drums (he's also played recently with the John Whetton band) Martin Orford - keys (also in IQ) John Jowitt - bass (also in IQ and ex-Arena) Gary writes most of the material, Martin throws in some nifty atmospheric keyboards and great backing vocals and the other guys are good players too. They have about 6 disks available: More Than Meets The Eye (1992) - 'Sleepwalk', 'Holding Your Breath' tc -excellent live staples. Once Upon A Time (EP -1993) - I don't have this one Across The Water (1994) - A great disk. I'd start with this - its all good. Once Or Twice (EP - 1996) - re-recorded versions of earlier Tunes, OK but not essential Somersault (1997) - The first CD of their which I bought. In retrospect not as good as some of the erlier stuff. Also has different bass and keys players. Don't listen to it much, now I have the other disks. As Daylight Fades (1998) - live album recorded with the Somersault line-up Understand (2000) - The newie The did tour with Marillion (once or maybe twice) in the UK/Europe in the early 90's, but never made it big. Nowadays they play a handful of gigs a year - usually 1 in the UK,a couple in Holland and Belgium (where they still seem to have fans) and the odd gig in South America. I'd guess that if you like IQ, then you'd like these guys too Website at http://www.jadis-net.co.uk/ Since their disks are issued on GEP, you might find it difficult to track down their CDs. There are ordering facilities on the website, but they are not the most sophisticated :-) Hope that helps Charlie ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 May 2000 10:21:58 +0200 From: "Michael Pruchnicki (DE)" To: "'ytsejam@torchsong.com'" Subject: Re: Myung Gettin' Funkay Message-ID: > Did anyone else notice the funky slap bass in SFAM in the verse right after > "I ran into Judy"? First time I listened to the CD was in the car, so I couldn't read the lyrics, and I heard "I ran into Judy and said we'd get together soon." I wasn't following the story 100% at the time, so I just figured we were just taking a look at a "happy" afternoon where she ran into one of her friends. And if you aren't paying close attention or don't know the words, James does run that phrase together quickly and it sounds like "Judy and" not "Julian." -El Mariachi "I'm the nothing face that plants the bomb and strolls away." ______________________________________________________________________ Check out Metallica's Official Web Site at http://www.metallica.com For 200+ channel 24/7 commercial free music visit http://radio.www.com ------------------------------ Date: 11 May 2000 12:35:50 -0000 From: "Awake ." Under the agreement announced Wednesday, the five companies will discontinue ``minimum advertised price'' programs that required retailers to sell music compact discs at or above a set level in return for getting substantial funding to underwrite their advertising. The programs cost consumers $480 million since 1997, the Federal Trade Commission estimated. ``These settlements ... should help restore much needed competition to the retail music market,'' FTC Chairman Robert Pitofsky said. ``Today's news should be sweet music to the ears of all CD purchasers.'' Under the consent agreement, Universal Music and Video Distribution, Sony Corp. (NYSE:SNE - news) of America, Time-Warner Inc., EMI Music Distribution and Bertelsmann Music Group will be barred from using minimum price programs for the next seven years. In return, the government agreed not to seek damages for past pricing practices of the companies, and the companies did not admit any wrongdoing, officials said. Officials at the five companies did not immediately return calls seeking comment. The Recording Industry Association of America declined to comment. The FTC said the five companies distribute 85 percent of the music CDs sold in the United States. The industry reported a record $15 billion in sales last year. The government contended the distributors and retailers wanted to keep CD prices high to avoid a repeat of the price wars of the early 1990s when consumers paid as little as $9.99 for some popular CDs. The companies adopted the minimum advertised price policies in 1995-96. By 1997, CD music ``price wars'' had ended, and the price of compact discs first stabilized, then steadily increased. The average CD now costs $14 to $17. That's as much as 30 percent to 50 percent more than a cassette tape with identical content. The recording industry attributes the price difference to the CD's higher sound quality and ease of use. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
