I'm not a drummer but thought the insite would help me musically so this action. I was watching with my drummer and after the first tape put the next tape in (the drummer was still picking up his jaw from the floor) guess what happened. The second tape was blank, totally blank!! My jaw fell during this time while we searched the whole tape. And the video was sealed also!!!! Freaked me out .....now I gotta send it back to Singapore (After I find someone agreeing to take it over there) to see the second part where he talks about the Dt songs and stuff. My drummer doesn't my tho.......he's happy with the first one and won't mind waiting even couple of years......<8 -^ just had to unload myself. -S ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Apr 2000 09:42:01 +0100 From: Graham Borland To: Ytsejam Subject: DT touring in UK again Message-ID: Wow. Once they get the authentication and copy protection worked out it will be great. WARNING!!! ---------- WARNING!!! ---------- WARNING!!! The next part of my post will contain SPOILERS ABOUT TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA'S "BEETHOVEN'S LAST NIGHT" > I have a question about the guest vocalists used on the last couple of TSO > releases. Is it just me or are some of the male vocalists reather > weak? Patti Russo is awesome on BLN but there are one or two male leads > who appear to my untrained ears to be lame. I think this contributes to > the overall "wussiness" of some of the ballads on these albums that I have > seen others comment on. Any thoughts? Plenty. I, too, thought Petti Russo was great on the CD. Jody what's-his-face has some nice moments, but they are few and far between. By and large, the singing sucks. However what REALLY annoys me about that CD is this: First, it seems that in just about EVERY song they do a huge molto ritardando before changing the mood. I know that's on all the other TSO and Savatage releases, but on this it is SERIOUSLY overdone. Second, they have all this great Beethoven music to choose from, and what themes do they use? Moonlight Sonata, the Fifth Symphony, and the Ninth Symphony (and maybe a little of the Fm 'Appasionata" Sonata? I've only listened to it twice) - God forbid play something that the ignorant masses AREN'T familiar with. Not only that, but they don't even go any further beyond the most obvious themes from those works - elements from the 5th are limited to the 'fate' motif, the 9th is limited almost exclusively to the 'Ode to Joy' part of the 4th movement. And when the Moonlight Sonata is played, it isn't played very well. (Granted, when they do play elements of the 5th, it sounds fucking awesome.) they had a GREAT opportunity to play some great music for a large audience that probably wasn't familiar with it, and they wasted it. Why? Possibly because they themselves don't know any more Beethoven than what is on the CD, but more likely because they didn't want to alienate anyone in their (CD-buying) audience by "taking down" to them with music that they don't recognize. ("Show-offs; they're just tying to show everyone how much classical music they know.) I don't know whether I feel sorrier for them or their ignorant audience. Third, I think they overdid it with the Mozart references. I understand, and even like, how he's tied into the story; but, I just think it's too much. It's a shame the Figaro overture is one of thi highlights of the CD. Fourth, references to Rimsky-Korsakov and the Grimm brothers are out of place, because as far as a I know, Beethoven was before their time. It's really a shame, too, because the story is really good. Worthy of much better music than TSO gives it. I think O'Neil/Kinkel sorely underestimated Beethoven's music. ---------- END SPOILER ---------- END SPOILER ---------- > I have the Live version recorded from milan. Thanks to Napster =3D) > It does contain the sampled verses that you spoke of. Was the version with samples from Milan or New York? I was under impression that it was from the Limelight. I mean, I know it was probably performed more than once, but I thought the only circulating recorded version was from NY. > That is what I think to be at the heart of Metallica's lawsuit against > Napster, and if I'm right, I fully support Metallica. You are right. I don't know if it's occurred to anyone here, but let's not forget that even if you don't like Metallica, if they succeed in what they are trying to do here, that it may very well help out some other band that you do like. Sure, they're doing it for themselves and their own revenue, but not every band is a huge as Metallica. They're using their fame to stand up for the little guy, and every other band that stands to lose a large chunk of change from illegal mp3 trading. I was impressed with the first half of the set whaich was all instrumental as they had no singer at the time. They then said we have a surprise for you and introduced their new vocalist from Seattle, is that the same guy as now? I retreated to the bar at that point as this guy proceeded to prance around the stage like he was in Motley Crue or something!!
