Napster is also a good program to grab but it all depends on the server you get upon connection. so on mIRC, the best server is Undernet. then goto a channel. #mp3_metal #hardrock&metalmp3 #mp3-metal all you have to do is enter the command: @find Jason Becker ( for example ) then voila! your in there like swimwear. and mIRC metal channels have wayyyy more prog, solo, etc, metal than any place else. but for the less patient, grab napster. everytime you log on, its different so its a bit of a lottery. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Apr 2000 15:41:51 -0700 From: Waseem To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Re: YTSEJAM digest 5429 Message-ID: i have a trillion guitarists on mp3. everything from michael romeo to even dweezil zappa! if anyone wants to trade then get back to me via icq. thanx ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Apr 2000 17:57:28 -0500 (CDT) From: Pat Griffin To: ThE NuGgeTjAm Subject: re: DT Font Message-ID: email_address_removed wrote: > I was wondering if someone knew what type of text/font is used for the > actual Dream Theater name that you see on their albums? I don't know a single person (personally) who downloads MP3s in lieu of buying a disc that they would have bought had the MP3s not been available. Personally, I have downloaded entire albums in MP3 format before. I downloaded all of Symphony-X's The Devine Wings of Tragedy, and I had SFaM months before it was actually released. But in both cases, I bought the album on CD as soon as I could. I have also downloaded entire albums that I didn't care for, and not only did I not buy the album, but I also no longer have the MP3s. In cases like this, MP3s serve as kind of a 'listening station' of sorts. If I like it, I buy it, if I don't, I get rid of it. I have also downloaded entire bootlegs in MP3 format. By bootleg, I mean a concert recording, not a knock off of an album. This is material that the band would not have been getting money from in the first place, so I'm not taking away anything by getting the MP3s. I don't have any bootlegs for which I don't *own* the accompanying official album releases from the band. It just happens that MP3 is an excellent medium for distributing concert recordings and rare tracks that aren't officially available anyway. My fiancee uses MP3s to put together what I call 'one-hit-wonder' CD-Rs. She gets the one song she likes from a band, converts it to .wav and burns it to an audio CD with other songs from other bands. Yes, it is true that she is not buying the album that that song is on, but since she only likes one song from the band, she never would have bought the CD anyway. And most of these songs are the ones that travel over the airwaves in regular rotation, so they are 'freely available' in a sense anyway. In this case, the record companies are not being screwed out of anything because she wouldn't have bought the disc anyway; and she get a CD quality copy of a song she likes. The one thing that no one I know does, and the one use for MP3s that I totally disagree with is just getting an album that you like in MP3 format alone, and not shelling out the money for a legit copy. Like the guy mentioned in the last 'jam who has 2,000 albums in MP3 format only and has not actually bought any of the albums even though he likes them. That *is* ripping off the record company and the artist responsible for the music, and I don't agree with using MP3s for that. As I said, MP3s are a great achievement, and they have the benefits of great quality, wide distribution, exposure for unknown artists, availability of rare/live material, 'preview listening,' compilation CD-Rs, etc... The only thing the Napster opponents have to cling to are those people who are ONLY getting MP3s and not the corresponding albums (assuming they would have bought the album if the MP3s were not available). But everyone that I know, and I am sure a good 95% of the people on this list are still supporting the bands and labels in every way that they did before the advent of MP3, and for us, MP3 is not a replacement, but rather an enhancement of the whole music experience. h t t p : / / w w w . r e a l i t y s q u a r e d . c o m / | Pat Griffin email_address_removed Reality Squared Design | h t t p : / / w w w . r e a l i t y s q u a r e d . c o m / ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Apr 2000 19:15:08 -0400 From: Dan Costello To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Re: YTSEJAM digest 5430 Message-ID: > Another good theme to cover: "Fletch". Its so obvious that they're > in it JUST for the money now. Art is something that should be open to all. > Buying and selling is what makes it a commodity. When are people like you going to get it through your heads? If you want to survive off your music, you have to separate the music and the money aspect. Fuck anyone who bitches because they can't get a free copy of what they should pay for in the first place. You try living off "free" "art." These aren't bootlegs. They're alternatives to paying for things that you don't feel like paying for, and that's just fucking greedy. The argument that "the band doesn't need the money" is perhaps the biggest problem of all, because I have not yet met one person who DLs and/or copies readily available albums to MP3, who has ever made the decision that "the band needs the money." For that matter, why do the band's "needs" come into play? What about their fucking RIGHTS? If I steal Bill Gates' car and get caught, I'm still going to prison. "Yeah, officer, but he doesn't need it! He can buy another one!" You're being dishonest with yourself if you pretend that you have some right to make and trade MP3s, instead of paying the $13 the cd costs. The attitude that one can just go ahead and make decisions for the band in terms of what they should sell and what they should give away is the most ego driven, dishonest bullshit. You shouldn't have the opportunity to make the value judgment. Legally, you DON'T have that opportunity. I don't know what makes me want to be a musician less... seeing that fans of a band are so willing to fuck over the band because they have a way to save a couple bucks, and who bitch and moan when the band is upset that t hey're getting screwed... or just the fact that I had to defend the most despicable band known to man, against someone who may actually be more despicable. - Chris ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Apr 2000 20:34:29 -0400 From: Dan Costello To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: DT covers Message-ID: > And then crazy train from Ozzy. They're alternatives to > paying for things that > you don't feel like paying for, and that's just > fucking greedy. Ah yes, time for me to push the bullshit button. Okay, here we go. A lot of up and coming bands can't wait to get their mp3s on the web since that way people can get their music for free and maybe buy their CD, if they ever get signed to a bigtime record label. Established acts can't wait to get their mp3s out there since it's basically free promotion. Pearl Jam, the Smashing Pumpkins, Metallica (at one point), Tom Petty, Alanis Morissette, No Doubt, Tori Amos and other big time acts have extolled the virtues of .mp3 b/c .mp3 can, in theory, free them of those evil record label contracts and allow them to do things on their own terms. It's rather simple. It's better for, say, Alanis Morissette that a download an entire album of her material and then go to one of her shows and buy a t-shirt b/c she sees more of that money than she would from me simply buying one of her CDs and calling it square. It's odd how it works tho, b/c the bigger the band is, the more money they make per CD. The more money they make per CD, the more they want you to buy it since they make more money than the concert/t-shirt route. In short, only the greedy fuckers want you to do that (and only some of them at that). When I d/l mp3s, it's an opportunity for me to find out if it's something I like. Thanks to .mp3, I didn't have to buy 311's 'Soundsystem' CD to figure out that I didn't like it. No money lost either way. ===== *Trent AIM- PageRiff Napster- cybertrent "Why does bottled water have an expiration date?" -Me __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Hell, I would have added the whole Met 1 into Met 2 opening segment. And JLMB is finally OK in my book with Jordan adding a cool solo bit in the middle. The live version of Home is pretty cool although I am biased a lot because I like the song a ton. The medley is a medley. And as such, I am biased to HATE these things although I told MP I wouldn't reinvent that thread so he wouldn't kick the crap out of me so I wont. Just because 80% of DT fans dont care for medleys and would prefer to hear fewer songs in their entirely doesn't mean that we should say so so I wont. Relating to James, he does OK with Home but as we all know this is from SFAM which had James selecting to take the safer (read: lower) registers. Note that myself and a lot of small furry creatures that live near venues personally prefer James not wailing but I know a lot of others dont. Masochists !! Nonetheless, in the medley it is rather painful to hear him take the lower registers on songs (er, "portions of songs") that we have all come to expect differently. And, he does crack a bit as well. Sad to say but it is kind of like watching Ewing play nowadays. And speaking of James, what's this I heard recently about him pulling another public relations boner in France recently. True ?? Thousands I bet. I bet too. The more people continue to contribute to the notion that art cannot be a commodity and that therefore it should be free, the more established bands/acts will suffer. Mp3 trading is a problem, but it's really just a symptom of the real stasis here: should music be 'free'? Many people (most of whom are probably non-musicians or just don't take 'musician' seriously as an occupation) think that music should be free. I don't know WHERE that attitude comes from, but it's asinine. Musicians provide a service for the people, and anyone who chooses to partake of that service owes the musicians some compensation. Can anyone justfy exactly WHY music should be free? I'll tell you how you can get free music: pick up your guitar, sit at your piano, sing, whatever, and CREATE something. THAT is free music. It's perfectly legal and no one can ever take it away from you. Then, if you like, by all means, rip an mp3 and put it on a website for all to enjoy. That is the END of all the free music you're entitled to. Steve Z ps, with Pitrelli now a full-time member of Megadeth, what does that say about Savatage? They wouldn't be the same without him. pps, the new Savatage better rule, because the new TSO SUCKS! ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 5432 **************************
