But each time the man plays a solo, or the spotlight is >turned over to him, I cringe, i really do, but thats just personal opinion. That was yours now this is my personal opinion : I have to agree that Derek is an amazing player but I truly find Rudess a master at his art, and for me the best I've ever heard, though both don't play at all in the same way so difficult to compare. Here's my little story : I saw DT in November in Lyon here in France and a lot went saying that the concerts were a warm up for the REAL SFAM concert so that JR could get into the music. But, he blew us all away, he fell into a mad tornado of ideas & notes that lasted a long time and I happened to be at that time at a very good view point. I was kinda in a daze lookin at this ;-P Just 1 last point : All of the 3 : Kevin, Derek & Jordan are AWESOME but it's funny how most of us miss Kevin a lot more than Derek. See ye all for now ... I love telling people about dream theater and have them listen to it for the first time after i tell them... It is an awesome feeling when they say " i can't believe i have never heard of these guys they are AWESOME!!".. so IMHO i hope dream theater increases there popularity but not too much.. I still want to see them in medium venues so we all can enjoy seeing them play!! I personally would not want to see DT from the back of a Stadium or anything like that where i would not be able to see their awesome playing abilities.. Oh well, i'll shut up now.. DT really had no experience with writing 'radio friendly' tunes, as FII recieved negligable radio airplay. Miles Davis would give his musicians weird, vague instructions, such as "Play like you don't know how to play guitar", or "Just play the butter notes", just to see how they would react. To a slightly different degree, that's what FII is to me. DT were given vague instructions, and they reacted to them, showing a side of themselves they probably didn't know they had, and that probably wouldn't have been shown otherwise. -Fran/Banjoman np: Rush - Moving Pictures ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Mar 2000 11:12:21 -0500 From: "Joe DeAngelo" To: Subject: Miscellaneous stuff....... I have no explanation for that... My kids were raised with my dog for the better part of their lives. (The dog is older than two of my kids) I have a good friend that has a 9 year old pit, 10 year old daughter, and a 4 year old son. He's had no problem with his dog. I dunno... In defense of the breed I can only ask you to contrast the rare (but highly publicized) Pit Bull bites to the volatile behavior of MANY smaller breeds. Look at the track record of the Cocker Spaniel, Pomeranian, and even the miniature Poodle. The damage the smaller dogs inflict is much less, but the intent is certainly there. Imagine a dog with the capability of the Pit Bull and the attitude of some of those annoying ankle biters... Scary thought, huh? Us humans have elected to domesticate and make animals part of our lives. With that comes the chances we take... Not all people are stable all the time... And we continue to call ourselves civilized. Personally, I think certain people need to be put to sleep. Many dogs have been put down for one error in judgment... Yet the asshole that cut off an old woman's finger so he could pawn her wedding ring gets rehabilitated... And this was his fourth felony. Fuck him. Let's introduce him to our friend, euthanasia. I'm sure your aunt did the right thing by putting the dog down. If my dogs attacked someone without provocation I'd shoot them myself. If a man broke into my house with the intent to do harm to my family, he'd be buried right next to the dogs. I asked him the same question becasue I wasn't sure if that thread was ever resolved - he said that JR has "the entire show of sounds programmed into his keyboard in order. He needs only to go from sound to sound. Oh yeah, and to answer your question on the improv stuff. He can switch to a bank of standard sounds to imporv, then go back to the set list." Questions about this went all over the place so I'm not sure if this helps anyone. I've concluded that JR can pretty much do whatever he wants to with the keyboard. While doing whole songs at random might be difficult, it would probably just require some changes here and there and he could do at least a close version of the original song. He's way too good to allow his equipment to limit him. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Mar 2000 16:07:47 -0600 (CST) From: Pat Griffin To: ThE NuGgeTjAm Subject: *** FAQ Updated and moved to new location *** Message-ID: ***--***--***--***--***--***--***--***--***--***--***--***--*** The Official Dream Theater FAQ has been updated and the new version is online. ***--***--***--***--***--***--***--***--***--***--***--***--*** Also, the location of the FAQ as well as the rest of my DT stuff has changed.
