Read on: "While the lights are kept on at all times, three police officers are on constant guard and play music almost non-stop, heavy metal and thrash music during the day, and pop bands like the Backstreet boys during the night. "Despite the music playing all night we're doing all right,"said SAS volunteer Sonia Singh. "The earplugs work pretty well." Police deny that they are using the music as a pressure tactic. "The music's just for us so we don't get bored,"said sergeant Darren Joyce."This is standard stuff. It's a long haul, both for the kids and us." No way, man, you're on the right track. Anyone who would suggest lobbying Spun or Rolled Stone is themselves being naieve, or at least hopelessly optimistic. Those magazines are NOT going to support Dream Theater. Goddamn it, even Q only manages to be lukewarm about them, and it's a far superior and musically-oriented publication than those two. It's a nice fantasy, but let's concentrate our efforts on lobbying magazines that are likely to be more sympathetic. Incidentally, I e-mailed Guitarist magazine over here, and the very nice editor Mr Neville Marten replied personally saying that they'd done a DT feature circa FII (I remember it; a 2-page spread with a full stage photo of JP. The only memorable line was that JP's already afflicted of tendonitus or something similar), and would be seeking him out again when DT reach Britain. Paul Gilbert finally learned to do the same, and Racer X split up, because they were really only ever a rather dull shred-fest. Think Jason Becker's "Perpetual Burn" album, but turned up to 11. I hope they I'm trying to deal with this in a constructive way; but WHY THE HELL DO PEOPLE FEEL SUCH AN URGE TO RIP ON DEREK?! For cryin out loud, you've had it from everyone - yes, including Mr Portnoy - FII was more commercially-oriented than "normal" (and besides, what the hell is "normal" in DT's case?! Name me two DT records that sound even similar before you throw around ideas like "normal") because the Record Company demanded it and the band agreed that maybe they should try to simplify the sound. As I understand it, Derek's participation in the writing of FII was pretty limited (he wrote large bits of LitS and NM, the latter would have been great if the production hadn't been so god-awful on it and the lyrics hadn't been so half-arsed). Bogie is extremely busy with his studies (finished in June, though - congrats!), so I'm helping out with adding new shows, new news, etc. I've seen a lot of people looking for shows from the current tour, and we aim to fill that demand. There are currently three new shows up: New York, New York - 9/27/92 (First show of the I&W tour! This is one I cleaned up from an analog master - definitely a collectible!) Den Bosch, Holland - 12/03/97 (Great sounding show from the first part of the FII tour) LTE at NAMM - 1/30/99 (Great recording of the rare LTE live shows. A shortened set at NAMM, but great anyways) Later today I'm adding 8/26/98, a very good recording of Dream Theater's opening slot for Deep Purple/ELP in Denver. Also on the way today or tomorrow is at least one good recording from the current tour! The likely candidate is St. Louis 2/12/2000. Richard Warren made a great recording, unlike all too many Dream Theater tapers out there lately. Much more to come in the next week or so, so come and get 'em! http://dreamtheater.mit.edu Enjoy!
