BTW, any idea how true this is? Or is it > just propaganda drummed up by the NRA to scare people into joining up? Im an immigrant from South Africa in Australia so I can tell you that the NRA are full of shit. In Australia granted there are probably a handful of loonys barricading themselves into houses because of crime, but you would get them anywhere. There are maybe some suburbs which have high crime levels where a gun may be of some use, but you can get a nice security system for the same price. Again, this is a very small part of Australia. By and large the only people who want guns here are hunters, and they can generally get them. South Africa is an entirely different matter. Nearly everyone there living in inner suburbs now has very high tech security (like if the alarm sounds, security men will come round and shoot the offender). Most people therefore carry some sort of defence, such as mace. So yes it is true that a large number of ordinary people own guns, but South Africa is a very screwed up country to put it frankly. It would be impossible for them to put in place gun control in the same way that America is capable of. Sorry if there is any South Africans on the list (is there?) who feel different. Im no expert but this is just the impression i get talking to relatives there. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Mar 2000 23:23:30 -0500 From: "Steven Zebrowski" To: Subject: gun'S and kid'S Message-ID: <001601bf84c8$3be8c760$0200010a@steve> > I Love shooting, hunting etc, I live in Australia and the gun laws here = > are so tuff I think I will have to give up the sport. Just thought I'd let fellow CT people know that I live in Monroe CT and got my CD yesterday, so it shouldn't be long before you all get yours if you haven't already. And it is indeed worth the wait. For those of you who have the CD, does this happen to you: The CD plays fine in any CD player, and on my computer, but when I go into My Computer (it's a PC) and double click the CD drive to view the files, it says either 'a device attached to the system is not functioning properly' (a new one to me) or 'device is not ready'. When I press retry it doesn't change. If I try to open the files using another program like Real Player, it does the same thing. I noticed that when I burned a listening copy, the CD burning software wouldn't let me do it Disc At Once because it says it's a multi session CD. I know what a multi session CD is - but could that be the cause of the problem? Finally, a question for people with a Kurzweil K2500 or K2600. I've been a happy owner of a Korg Trinity ProX for three and a half years now, and am still happy with it except for one big thing - that it cuts out for a split second when changing patches. This would make it impossible to use the way Jordan uses his keyboard, changing patches left and right on the fly. This is making me eye the K2500/2600 racks. My question is, how easy are they to use? How's the interface? Sounds I'm not worried about - I've played it a little in the store and it sounds fine, and I'm sure I can program it to sound how I want. What I'd be worried about is how hard it is to do so. The Trinity is pretty user friendly (for the most part). I mean, I'm not dropping cash any time soon at all, but I am curious about this instrument for down the road when I have the $$. If anyone could tell me briefly what they love about it, and more importantly what they hate about it, that'd be great. Thanks. I would apprecciate if the people who consider themselves "people who think" would read this post: If you people talk about guns, or any other highly controversial issue, I will usually not look at what you say, but why you say it. Is what you say YOUR opinion, or have you just accepted the same that everybody around you thinks? more importantly: Do you put the sort of effort into re-thinking/checking/updating your own opinions that you expect others to do? We all want others to "think about it", "see they are wrong" yet we all put so little effort into searching for what WE ARE WRONG at. You can't really be 100% right, but you can PUT EFFORT into understanding the other, put effort into tolerance. Work on your views. Open mind for a different view and nothing else matters. I mean, we have two directions: pro gunners derive their pro gunness from a basic constitutional right. Anti gunners are pure peace lovers, pacifists, right?? Why is everybody so damn aggressive then?? If you want nice peace, OR constitutionalism, then you should be a bit more open to TRUE debate, I think. To put it in another way, both directions have a positive source, but somehow what many of you transmit ends up being negative. Also some of you people know so little about sanctions/punishment, it's effects and side effects; so little about what law is supposed to do, what law can do for society, that you might want to consider even refraining from some of these discussions. Similarly as many guitarists refrain from vocal-related threads............ I only said "might" and "consider", and I that is what I meant. That's all from me for now.
