And this is why I'm not only going to the Atlanta show, but also flying to Orlando. :-) (Ahh, only a few more days) When I criticize their live show, I'm definitely not saying I won't enjoy the show (double negative). I just have a different viewpoint of live material from, I think, most 'Jammers. I travel far and wide to see Widespread Panic (~25 shows per year, from Los Angeles in July to Orlando a few weks ago), who don't have anywhere near the talent of Dream Theater, but put on a unique show every time. That's what really attracts me to them. If you're just going to see one show, Dream Theater will win almost every time (except for "special" shows - WSP's New Year's Eve show this year was very close to the best I've ever seen), but over the long haul Panic stands up better. There's only so many times you can hear SFAM live without getting sick of it, which is why I'd like to see them vary the setlist. It's difficult, but we already know these guys can play anything planned beforehand, so I'm looking to see some improvisation. Yeah, it might not be perfectly tight all the time, but that's what makes it interesting. Derek, I think, helped bring this kind of free thinking to the band (note all the covers during FII, Nightmare Cinema, Nicky Lemmons, etc) and I hope it doesn't go away now that Jordan's here. Though Jordan is a superior musician to Derek (IMO, and I think most other people's as well) I think he might bring a more serious attitude to the table. And just when they were starting to loosen up on stage. :) So bottom line is that I can't wait to see the show, but I'm not quite as excited as I would be if they brought some variety into the show. (ahem, Awake material, ahem). :) Take care all.. Most of you know Echolyn, but their music is characterized by stellar playing, wonderful counterpoint, multi-part harmonies and tight compositions. Priam's music is intense, atmospheric and melodic guitar-driven instrumental progressive fusion. (MP3's of these bands will be available shortly.) The show will be held at a great new rock club in Allentown called the Crocodile Rock Cafe (http://www.crocodilerockcafe.com). Ptacek" To: Subject: Tone Message-ID: <001f01bf7dcd$787897c0$2c59fea9@madstation> You guys are sort of talking about two seperate things as per "TONE" Clearly there's a huge sonic difference between a TriAxis on Lead 2 Red and a Fender Twin pushed up to half volume. But there's also a huge sonic difference between The Foo Fighters the other night on Letterman, playing through Dual Rectifiers and JP playing through them on tour. Both are valid points, but one is far more important than the other, and that's the second. What Tristam has said is dead on. Anyone can save up money and buy a TriAxis... if I did, that's proof... I'm so fucking broke! But that's just it... you don't have to be a good guitarist to get that kind of tone. You could have rich (and stupid) parents and get a Dual Rectifier as your first amp, and you WILL sound like shit no matter how good the gear is. It's much more important to develop the type of tone that goes with you from guitar to guitar, and amp to amp. Listen to Steve Vai. He's been playing through something different every album lately, and he ALWAYS sounds like Vai. Same with Ron Thal (and really, just about every great guitarist for that matter.) The tone color, in a manner of speaking, changes. The feel... the soul... the sound that is in the player, remains the same. - Chris ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Feb 2000 23:26:43 -0800 From: email_address_removed (Dr. Mosh) To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: f'ing old folks home Message-ID: Jeezus Christ, I didn't know there were still so many old timers left on the list... My buddies and I will be at the show very early, probably with a big bucket of Popeye's chicken and some beers, waiting for the show. I'll be wearing Ytse, so stop by and say hello to the Notorious B.I.G. S.W.I.F.T.Y. if you don't mind :) > -compadre sits and wonders if DT despises the state of Texas No, they don't despise Texas. They despise Alabama. Not that I blame them :) I bet they don't even stop to take a piss during their hour-long trek between Mobile and Pensacola along I-10. Not that it matters, but I've been on here since about #1600. The first 'jams that are on the archive are actually historically significant, because they were during the Fix for '96 mini-tour, when Pellaz, Beavis, Jennifer, dicknose, and I were driving up the coast to burn in Birch Hell :) I wonder if those sobbing Scandinavian chicks ever got their keys out of their car after the show? > What about the big ASCII middle finger, for that matter? :) That was my doing, unfortunately :) I deleted that motherfucker from my hard drive about three years ago. Luckily, I was able to save it again when it was reposted a few times. Does anyone have any information about the in-store appearance in Orlando? I don't want to call them, because I'm cheap, but I suppose I'll have to if no one can post any info about it here. I got a raise today! Yippee! Hey, Wade :) Take care, Mark Peters email_address_removed ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 5336 **************************
