Maybe if you stop analysing SFAM and giving it to professors to analyse a= nd stuff you could actually sit back and realise that this is one of their most enjoyable and coolest alb= ums ever. I find when I give DT records to people I get the following responses- I + W : After laughing at the '80s hair metal bogons' on the cover, they = give it a listen and say that its not too bad. You can create the next "club sensation" on ReBirth in twenty > minutes. But a lot of it isn't identical, no matter what you may say. Yes, most of the big "club sensations" are pretty damn close, because half of them (at least) just take an existing pop hit and lay a standard beat under it. And yes, I know how easily a person can churn out standard dance music, I've done it also. But there are many many tunes out there that mix it up. It doesn't really even matter, because dance music is for dancing, not listening, but I get annoyed with these gross generalizations. Lost of people on this list get pissed at the stereotype of metal as "screaming, guitar solos, and dungeons and dragons lyrics," but then they're perfectly willing to toss around the same stupid, easy stereotypes about any other kind of music. I hope *you're* kidding here. Plant's idiosyncratic delivery would have been lost if he had sung "correctly." He would have sounded just like everyone else who sings "correctly." It would have completely killed that wild feel that his lyrics lent to the music, which fit perfectly with Page's "sloppy" riffs that felt like they could break into anarchy at any time. That's what gave their music the great edge it has, as far as I'm concerned. I don't think you'll find many Zep fans who wish that Plant had sung "correctly." Maybe this is just a basic difference of opinion here. I'm totally into the "feel" of something. I don't care about technique as long as something sounds good. You on the other hand seem to be the type of person who wants to hear everything smoothly done. Right, set. I agree that right-hand techniques - i.e. one's picking - will have a drastic effect on the sound. And in that context, fair enough; I know I can change picking style and - particularly with low gain settings - it'll have more of an effect than, say, changing pickups. HOWEVER, I'm still unconvinced about left-hand tecniques having such a drastic effect. Let's not talk about vibrato, 'cos obviously that has a huge effect on the tone. But, unlike the violin, viola, fretless bass or whatever, your fingers are NOT the stop-point on a guitar. That's the reason thatr fingers have such an effect on the above instruments; but with a guitar, ultimately the stop-point is the fret or the nut. Sure, push too hard and the note'll slip sharp. My critcisms are >that I would lower the action a little from the shop model and use >steel strings (because I like the brighter sound and because I am allergic >nickel) I have to duplicate this. But I really love it despite its slight (correctable) shortcomings. I've never tried out a standard 6-string, but after playing a 5-string SDGR, I knew there would be no way I could handle it. This puppy's neck is about the same width, if not thinner(?) and plays most sweetly. I agree about the action being a bit too high, but I already get enough rattle with the low-B, I really wouldn't want to hear what it sounded like if I dropped it even more. Maybe I'll experiment. As for strings, I really don't care so much. I'll probably play these nickels until I wear them out and them go to steel strings. I dunno. This is the first bass I've ever really played, though, that gave such easy access to the 24th fret (let alone have that many!). No need to hook, curl, and dislocate fingers for this one. :) It seems to weigh about the same as my old Washburn, so I'm not complaining about that one. :) "I bet my bass sounds better than yours Mr. Myung, cuz mine's a red one!" -- KorgX3 hasn't been able to post for about three days now. :( NP: Metallica - One.mp3 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Feb 2000 13:47:27 -0700 From: "Korg Ecksthrey" To: Subject: How big a boy are ya? - Roy D. Damn, I've spent too long here, I think. :) Let's see... in the beginning, I first subscribed back in Dec. 1994 from college. People might remember me as being some schmuck named and signing off as Mr. Chuckalupugus. hehehehe. I unsubbed at the end of college (and my internet access) in May, 1995. Then I came back in Sep. 1996 and have been here ever since. :) I wonder how many people are still around who signed the ACoS petition? I was able to sign it just before I left in '95. I remember nearly wetting myself when I picked up that CD and saw the Ysejam credited in the liner. :) That rokd nadz. I even remember back in the olden days when people praised Mike Bahr's name... Small wonder, eh? :) hehehehe. -- KorgX3 calls the Ytsejam his second home. NP: Dream Theater - Take the Time.mp3 ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 5328 **************************
