You can write a good story without the schlock that SFaM is rife with. It's not just an issue of being ambiguous or deep. It's an issue of there being a poorly written narrative here. Anyway, the lyrics are *definitely* not clear, intentionally or otherwise. This is obvious from the amount of discussion here when the album came out about what the storyline really was...nobody really knows what's going on, and the band isn't saying. They want to leave it "open for interpretation." > This is my third and my last request to unsubscribe me from this > crapletter. The next request will be from my lawyer. Blah, blah, blah, blah. Sheesh. Correctly my ass. Correctly for the kind of music you're doing, sure. But lemme tell you, if you sang that way to most rock songs, 99% of the people who heard it would laugh. It just doesn't fit. To say that's the ONLY correct way to sing for ANY kind of music is arrogant and assinine. Think of any rock band that really gets you going...Led Zep, Megadeth, Rush, Slayer, Anthrax, whoever it might be. It would not work with "correct" singing. And because someone thinks that vibrato in prog is cliched, you assume that they haven't listened to anything other than straight rock? Once again, arrogant and assinine. I happen to agree with him. I don't mind the vibrato most of the time, but when it's really accentuated it's right up there with Yngwie's scalar runs, awful Peart-style lyrics about philosophy, and songs about dragons. The "blame" is not Nicole's. To the contrary, IF there is blame it's in Holland. It's foolish for the CD to be taking this long. I think many of us have shipped things overseas. And I know the items got there much quicker than this. I guess the Northeast is the area most effected by this. Don't make sense. I guess ours are coming via three legged turtle. I also think it's sad that an American band doesn't have a US branch of their fan club. Certainly this is not our fault but the record buying public. We can all admit that we're tired the wait. For once I get to actually correct you, Brian. WRONG. I'll say it again: WRONG. Vibrato IS the result of a "correct" singing technique. No ifs, ands, or buts. You can argue all you want to about "whether or not the style dictates the need for it," but all in all, if you are singing with a HEALTHY tone that is completely free and not held by the vocal mechanism, then you are singing with vibrato. There's just no argument in that. And trust me, my teacher has forced all the mechanics of it down my throat. You changed what I originally said into a matter of preference, which it is not. If you'll notice, I said "Too many pop and rock artists don't sing with vibrato because they don't have the skills necessary to do it properly, and that makes the people that DO use it seem out of the ordinary." I said out of the ordinary. I didn't say anywhere that because he felt it was cliched that he was wrong, or that vibrato BELONGS in all types of music. > And because someone thinks that vibrato in prog is cliched, you assume > that they haven't listened to anything other than straight rock? Once > again, arrogant and assinine. I happen to agree with him. It makes me laugh. And I didn't say that he didn't listen to anything other than straight rock. What I was implying in the statement about him being exposed to too much rock music and NOT ENOUGH of everything else (not "nothing else") was that HE thought that vibrato is cliched and that it shouldn't be there. Why not? It's a completely natural thing to do, and yet it shouldn't be in there? Sure, there are times when it shouldn't be there - it creates tension in the voice when you sing without vibrato and that, in turn, causes tension in the listener. That makes it great for those moments when you want a lot of tension in the air. But I just don't understand why a person would call something that is SUPPOSED to be in the voice in order for it to be a healthy tone "cliched." Man 1: "God, I can't believe he's singing with vibrato." Man 2: "Why?" Man 1: "Well, for crissake, people have been singing with vibrato since the time Bach was alive. You'd think they'd have gotten sick of it by now." ------------------------------------------------- Andrew Coutermarsh email_address_removed http://cout.dhs.org/ Cloak on IRC ICQ: 2513441 ------------------------------------------------- I like to go down to the dog pound and pretend that I've found my dog. Recently we've seen an influx of "unsubscribe me!" threats and other fun diatribes. I'm going to run out on a limb here and say a couple things: 1) Don't bother sending unsubscription replies to the Jam. By the time someone's pissed off enough to send "unsub me you fuckers" emails, they're not reading the Jam anymore anyway. 2) Don't comment about the unsub reply or the idiot who wrote it. The last jam had about six replies ABOUT the unsub and most of them were just commenting on what an idiot the guy is. (The thing that really surprised me is that some of the replies were from longtime list members who ought to have better things to do with their time -- hi D-Man, hi Partha, hi Dave, hi Gaz) :P 3) *Do* send unsub instructions to the dude who wants out. Ignoring them is fun, but then we all have to deal with fifty more "take me off!" requests. It takes about three seconds to cut n' paste a reply with the appropriate instructions. CC: it to multiple addresses if necessary. Just a few remarks. Flame away if you like, but pointing fingers and laughing at the idiots aren't going to get rid of them, unfortunately. :) cheers, Phil ================================================== Phil Carter -- email_address_removed -- http://users.usefulware.com/phil "Music, the greatest good that mortals know / And all of heaven we have below." -- Joseph Addison ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Feb 2000 21:26:35 -0500 From: "Greg Jones" To: Subject: Re: YTSEJAM digest 5325 Message-ID: <000c01bf7c13$14de5080$13e78ad1@gregjones> > > Greg Jones wrote.. > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ > Tone is primarily in the gear, fingers > play a smaller role. I disagree. >Basic tone come from technique, > changing gear is like EQing the basic sound. Because most electric > guitarists are self taught they never think about getting a good tone via > playing technique. Don't stereotype me. Sure a lot of my guitar training is self-taught but I've also been taught by 4 separate guitar teachers. I am also classically trained on the violin and piano. What do you think EQ affects? TONE! Which affects tone more? EQ/amps/effects or fingers? The answer is easy. The gear. Answer my original question. Why did Eddie Van Halen's tone change from Roth to post Roth? His fingers didn't change. His gear did. He went from playing Marshall Plexis to playing Soldano/Peavey 5150's! He went from playing lots of analog verb and phaser to playing tons of Eventide Chorus. In classical music training good tome is taught hand in > hand with what is commonly referred to technique. In this statement, you seem to be admitting that tone and technique are separate. If we can agree on this, then how can you say tone is in the fingers? Technique, now that is in the fingers. The guy on this mailing list that mentioned how he saw sucky guitarist playing through a ton of great gear was wrong to say that the guy's tone sucked. His playing sucked. I'm going to say it one more time, and unless you can refute this statement, I'm right (sorry to sound so closed-minded)! If I played an open D chord through Eddie Van Halen's gear, and EVH played the same open D chord through his gear, you couldn't tell a difference. The same would be true if both of us played an open D chord through crappy gear. OTOH, if you compared EVH playing an open D chord through his gear, to his open D chord through crappy gear, you'd immediately hear a difference. Furthermore, if I played anything that I wanted through any gear, and EVH played like EVH through the same gear, the difference you would hear would be that of technique. If it's tone, then why couldn't you tell the difference when both of us played the open D chord? See, that's odd, because when I ordered Twilight in Olympus from them I had no problems getting it. I hope your horror stories aren't true... I think the reason I haven't gotten it is because I ordered it just over the weekend, so they haven't been open to be able to get it. From what I understand, it said it was in stock, just in a different shipping station from the video (hence the reason that it didn't get sent at the same time as the video). Besides, the only reason I ordered it through CDNow was because I had a $15-off coupon for an order of $30 or more, and the total of the CD and the video came to less than it would have been had it just been the CD under normal circumstances. ------------------------------------------------- Andrew Coutermarsh email_address_removed http://cout.dhs.org/ Cloak on IRC ICQ: 2513441 ------------------------------------------------- If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you. ------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Feb 2000 20:43:01 -0800 From: matt guillory To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Re: Tone Message-ID: >Date: Sun, 20 Feb 2000 22:21:22 -0000 >From: "Tristam Douglas" >To: "YtseJam" >Subject: Tone >Message-ID: <000d01bf7bf0$e88ebfa0$8825883e@freeserve.co.uk> >Greg Jones wrote.. >------------------------------------------------------------------------ >Tone is primarily in the gear, fingers >play a smaller role. I'm not a guitarist, but I definately agree with you Tristam. Over the years I've seen a number of guitarists that go out and buy buttloads of gear in hopes of achieving the "ultimate tone." I think of gear as perhaps more of an enhancement more than anything else. The day before I'd received a call from Dregs bassist Andy West asking me if I'd like to come up and see the show. Hell yeah! Thanks, Andy! I got there a bit late and missed a couple songs from the Dregs set, but otherwise it was definitely a killer! I hadn't seen the Dregs since the Industry Standard tour when it hit the old Agora. That place had later burned down, but that was still years ago. Thursday's concert was in a different building where the Agora resurrected itself. This came up in conversation with Andy after the show. It was kind of funny because Andy remembered playing the Agora during the Industry Standard tour, but just couldn't reconcile this building with his memory. He was relieved to know it wasn't due to loss of brain cells! LOL!!! The DT set was truly exceptional. And while I often recommend earplugs for concerts, some who've already caught this tour may understand when I say I might recommend sunglasses for this show as well! LOL!!! While all members were really hot that night, I really had my ears open for James LaBrie. A few months back I'd hosted an IRC Chat with him. After the chat he and I spoke for a while and one of the topics that came up was opera. He was not familiar with opera, but was looking to check some out. I'm a bit of an opera buff and made some recommendations to him. Anyway, I was keen on checking out his vocal technique in a live performance situation. I doubt he's had the chance to check out any of the opera recommendations I gave him yet, but overall, I have to rate his technique highly. I know of many vocalists who sound great on record, but stink in live performances. Certainly not the case here. He paced himself well between ballads and rockers and no doubt took good advantage of the instrumental breaks. In fact, I would say that James will keep that voice much longer than many of his contemporaries. Overall I was amazed that it held up so well in such a smoky building. But then I did see him hit the water bottles quite regularly, so I'm sure that helped. Of course, with all that water he was drinking, maybe it wasn't so surprising that he got off the stage so quickly during the extended instrumental breaks! LOL!
