Giacomini" To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Re: Beatles/ Dave's list Message-ID: Okay, here's my take on all of this that's been sad about 'em... First, I agree with Trent, Ringo was a shitty drummer and singer, can't say a shitty composer 'cause I don't know which Beatles' songs were his and know nothing of his solo stuff... But I can't agree with what Steve Z said about how they weren't innovative... Man, you gotta remember they did what they did in the 60's... It's not like they've just released their first album with the kind of music they did... (Dunno why, but Oasis came to mind now - heheheh) But back then, it was pretty innovative and fresh... Now, congratulations to Dave for his list, great job... But I must say, having seen Soundgarden and Alice in Chains, I also thought PJ's Ten would be in the list, 'cause IMO it's much better than Badmotorfinger or Dirt... And as Brian, I would've put The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion (Black Crowes) in the list, great blues/rock album... Still, Dave did a great job, and he compiled a great list of records... The only band he ever liked a little was Pink Floyd. He has few albums by them. Dark Side .. might be album he knows best of them, but otherwise he is really not a dude to discuss music with. He was in my home while I had the borrowed SFAM CD from a friend. So I played it for him. At first he thought I took some meditation/yoga kinda CD lessons, judging from the SFAM intro "Close your eyes, relax, bla, bla .."! :) Funny. He knows I'm a crazy DT fan, actually it was on his computer that I first experienced Internet and bothered him by searching for DT sites. :) Anyway, he asked: "What is this stuff?" "You guess" I said. He didn't have a clue. After the music/LaBrie starts I said: "What does THIS part sound like to you?" A microsecond after I finished my question he replied "Pink Floyd!" :) How about that, PF whiners? :) As soon as I hear that organ sound in the back, acoustic guitar and calm singing voice I have only one association - THE WALL! Also The Spirit Carries On intro reminds of The Wall. LaBrie really sounds like Roger Waters there on the beginning. BTW, anyone else noticed the U2 part of SFAM? ;) Get outta here, it's TOO obvious, just listen to Labrie end part of Through Her Eyes. Pure Bono Vox kinda singing. And finally, the intro part (after the psycho speech) of Finally Free, the mood of it (maybe not the music itself) really reminds me of Mozart's Requiem. It's so creepy. :) Any comment? Seriously ... not tryin' to prove DT ripped off few bands, just that the similarity is there, huge similarity. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Jan 2000 11:55:08 EST From: email_address_removed To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: A Couple Of Things... Message-ID: Hey - Well, after reading Mr. Thomas's wonderful Top 90 list, I'm very interested in hearing a few of the bands he mentioned. Specifically, I'm looking for MP3's of the following bands: Conception Threshhold Vanden Plas Of the 3, I've heard a little bit of VP, but I'd like to hear more. So far, I found the official website of Conception, but there are no sound clips at all, much less MP3's. If anyone can point me to a website where I can check these bands out, I'd appreciate it. And in other news... does anyone know a ballpark timeframe as to when the US fan club members will be receiving their XMas CD's? The last I heard on the UACM, we were supposed to be receiving it mid January. But then I saw that fan clubs in other countries were going to have to wait until maybe mid February. Does anyone know what the current status of the US fan club CD's is? Thanks!! - Matt T. On the one hand, it seems fair and largely indisputable to make certain comparative claims between musicians. I can look at what someone like, say, Jason Newsted has done, and then look at what someone like Jeff Berlin has done, and it seems pretty clear and indisputable that Berlin is the more capable, accomplished bassist. Other comparisons are more difficult. I can try and compare Berlin to say, Stanley Clarke, but they're both in such rarified air among bassists, that if anything, the outcome might seem to reduce to opinion. Yet presumably, when we're making these comparisons, the claim is that, yes, *objectively*, John Petrucci is clearly the better guitarist than Courtney Love. What that seems to boil down to is that we can roughly place certain musicians on a plateau, and of that upper echelon, comparison seems fruitless. So guys like Berlin, Clarke, Jaco, Manring, Wooten, etc., are all so accomplished in their mastery of the bass that comparison among them can *only* reduce to subjectivity. Looking at that, though, it doesn't seem to be a satisfying answer to this question of comparison. Because then the question becomes, how does one gain inclusion to this level? And how many levels are there? Certainly guys like Berlin and Manring seem to stand out over, say Myung, but Myung is on a pretty high rung himself, standing out over X, who seems to stand out over Y, until you get to the bottom of all the rungs, where we find Kip Winger. =) This question has been in my mind for awhile, and it comes up again now between Bonham and Peart, two drummers who are held in high esteem. One obvious answer is that it only reduces to subjectivity, but like I said, that's unsatisfying because we want to be able to say that Petrucci is clearly better than Love, objectively. However, we also want to be able to say that, I dunno, stand Holdsworth up next to Vai, and there is room for genuine disagreement. So, where do we draw the line between objective and subjective judgments concerning musicians? --matt tedesco ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Jan 2000 13:48:47 -0500 From: NuGgeTMaN To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Re: SFAM / PF Message-ID: Actually the similarities help DT on this album quite a bit...commercially speaking. No offense! It's like saying that 1+1=4. They progressed (yes, the word I use here is progressed!) more from their first recording to their last that anyone ever has. It's quite amazing the amount of progression that the band made. To go from "She Loves You Yeah Yeah" type stuff to the Sergeant Pepper stuff is an amazing progression. Not to mention the many innovations that they were rsponsible for in the recording process itself. Music would not be where it is today if not for the Beatles.
