I find that Santana's music is quite interesting and quite "moving". I suppose that the mix of all the auxillary percussion and blending of styles might have something to do with it. As for his playing in general, superb. He has a great deal of feeling in his music. Remember, it is not how many notes you can cram into a measure but how you play them. I too have heard guitarists play that can easily be outplayed by the Petruccis and Van Halens of the world, but John and Eddie don't have the same ability to move you like Santana can. Well, gotta run.. oh and btw, I love that song that Santana does with Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20.. very cool! However, if you were to acquire one of Panasonic's top-shelf players and mate it with a better pair of headphones, you'd have some of the best attainable sound-to-go well within your price range. You'll want to bring your player with to audition the headphones. Power hungry phones will be a challenge for ANY portable to drive. Some of the high impedance Sennheiser phones my be ideal with a portable. I'd also try some of the Grado, and AKG stuff. Don't be surprised if your portable falls on it's face trying to drive some of the better headphones to high volume levels. Lower impedance phones will also shorten battery life significantly. IMHO I believe the Ernie Ball guitars are very nice. I wonder why EB though? not PRS or Anderson or some other make. (I know about the non-locking PRS trems and the TA only ever have 22 frets; I am just speculating.) I think it is a shame that a player seems to play the guitar because he has got a deal rather than he/she believes it to be the best instrument. I wonder if the contractual details are about money, number of guitars, advertising or what. I know that SV and JS are the premier Ibanez endorses. I know Vai has been with them for 15 years but it was him who invented the RG/jem body and the back routed trem etc. etc. etc. So Via is an intellectual share holder in Ibanez so to speak. He really designed the break through instrument for them. Besides he loves his Ibanez guitars, you just need to read any interview where he discusses them. I have never hear/read about JP enthusing over his guitars like Via. Maybe JP just sees them as more of a tool. ------------------------------------------------- Tristam Douglas email_address_removed.co.uk ------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Jan 2000 04:54:49 -0500 From: "Daniel T. I have said it before but to my mind you need competition between band members in this sort of band. You can't deny that JP lost a bit of edge during the Derek years, too many "pet" licks if you know what I mean.;} Do you need this element of competition to keep your edge? I think there is an element of competition between JP + JR think LTE2 linear notes "keeping up with Jordan..." Also "maturing as a player" is a term usually waved about when a guy starts to play less technically demanding stuff and play more "tasteful," slower passages. JP did this in FII, to my ears, atleast. (When you get older, generally you become less competitive... a possible link.) If Derek was less of a threat with regards to upstaging JP than say KM/JR this may explain why the band was less innovative. I am not talking in terms of musical merit or style here thought. OK, RIGHT NOW we live in this kind of world, but imagine more sane and normal one! So what if in that kind of surrounding you watch on TV some insane bloody movie as Natural Born Killers, or some computer game (Doom) with violent elements, shooting folks around, blood all around? We're used to it, but imagine more pure world. You don't need to be as them, but at least understand WHY they complain about games as Doom and movies as Natural Born Killers. They just ask for a little sanity. There are many artistic masterpieces (movies, songs, books), but the topics dealed with in them are quite tricky. And if you have one healthy kid raised in good environment, exposed to these things - this is the problem. Again, we're used to it, for us it's even PERFECTLY NORMAL hearing on news someone got shot or robbed or beaten to death, BUT it can be a disasterous for pure mind of a child. Not trying to sound like the guy who made that site, I'm actually quite amazed HOW he came with such conclusions. What's sad is that because of guys like him other folks generalize and proclaim as moronic one whole religion or type of behaviour. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Jan 2000 08:28:11 -0500 From: "M P" To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Re: YTSEJAM digest 5252 Message-ID:

I have to side against this, myself (even though having
Lee on film again would be cool). Story albums rarely
translate as well as one would think they should, not to
mention very few labels would actually spend the money required
to make a decent film. I'd rather not see a film at all
than see someone botch it banking only on the band name to
sell the video.

But this does scream for some kind of visual treatment in
