G'n'R's Estranged is without a doubt the greatest song
they've written.  Even though I'm not a huge G'n'R
fan, that is the one song that turned me onto the UYI
1&2 CD's.  I think it was back in the summer of 1992
or '93, when Q104 in NY just started broadcasting. 
For about 6 months, all they played was Metallica,
G'n'R "Estranged", Aerosmith, Red Hot Chillies, Yes,
Rush, just to name a few.  A very limited
rotation...anyone remember?

I was listening to Awake and SFAM this past weekend
with my cousin.  He's one of those people who only
cares for DT's Awake album...nothing else, saying that
its a unique album with major balls, and nothing else
they've done has come close.  we were talking about
emotional lyrics and melodies.  Awake does have some
of the strongest emotions lyricly and musicly out of
all of DT's discography.  But it doesn't end there.

SFAM has an all encompassing blend of all the styles
we have come to like in DT over the years...Awake is
in no way a "unique" album for DT...it was "unique"
when we first heard it.  But for anyone who has liked
bits and peices of DT's earlier releases, SFAM is sure
to please.  FT and FF are my top 3 favs for SFAM.

Actually if I recall correctly, Mike himself said they signed a contract back in
92 for like 9 albums or something which means their contract would almost be up
if you include LaTM as an E/W release

This really was a shocker for me, but here goes:
Awake: 25 (39.6%)
Images and Words: 21 (33.3%)
Scenes From a Memory: 15 (23.8%)
Falling into Infinity: 2 (3.1%)

It seems that Awake has some really dedicated followers and it has just 
blown me away that it has received such support.

Now granted, this poll is less than 10% of the people on this list (because 
most people are PUTZES and don't bother to vote) but hey, what can ya do?

Oh, for crissake... I meant anybody who doesn't want to have to spend $25
a pop just to get the new controllers.  As a matter of fact, I NEVER play

Funny to see where saying DT should be much higher on the top200
leads.....anyway there's been some talk about how great socially critical
lyrics are. I won't dispute that but lemme add my 0.2$ to that.
While I'm absolutely in favor of this kind of lyrics I just don't see what
good it actually does. Just going "society sucks Mo*********!!!!!" whether
on stage or in the studio won't get anyone anywhere, except for the band and
the label selling records to white middle-class kids who think they're so
rebellious and intellectual. There IS some stuff going on that is of use,
though. Bands like RATM or the Beastie Boys donate money for some good
cause. I don't like either one too much but they actually DO something, even
if it's just donating and endorsing. On the other hand, Dave Mustaine spends
large amounts of money for Big Brother (for fatherless children). One more
thing on this subject, there are differences in what is being said and how.
Example: Public Enemy's lyrics seem educated and thought out (same thing for
Slayer and Ice Cube) while a lot of this pseudo-alternative stuff just goes
"I'm a goddam rebel you suck I don't everyone's a racist I'm not that's why
you suck and I don't so why don't you just boogie off of this world"
Rush's lyrics (granted not the early sci-fi stuff) are socially concious
too, as is some DT stuff (Peruvian Skies, Anna Lee etc.)

So, Korg, you're pro-choice huh? What about Pro-Pain ;-)

But obviously, just because SFAM has a plot in it doesn't mean it would be
possible to capture what we know as SFAM on film.

Yeah, you could probably make a movie with those characters and those
relationships between them, with some of the lines and courses of actions
found in the SFAM sleeve. But SFAM isn't just a sleeve; some of you might
have noticed that there's a cd in the box as well. Even with dt style
progmetal all over the soundtrack, you wouldn't come _near_ SFAM at all.

So I gather that this thread is purely speculative and that no one seriously
believes that all the tiny, yet vastly important details that make SFAM what
it is, would be possible to recrate in a film. Cool references like "I shut
the door and traveled to another home" that appear all over the lyrics would
be completely lost.

Actually, unless I'm mistaken, WDADU was under the label of "One Way
Records".  I'm assuming that's NOT an EastWest label?

That would mean that counting I&W, Awake, ACoS, LaTM, FII, OIALT, and
Met2, that's only seven albums.  That's still at least three years or more
before their contract's up.  I'm not worried :)  They'll probably go with
Metal Blade or something after that.  Besides, DT makes plenty of money
for E/W in their genre - they ARE the most popular of the progressive
metal bands, hands down.  I think E/W would jump at the opportunity to
renew their contract.  But hey, I could be wrong.

I'm rather dissapointed that after waiting 2+ days for a new jam, it finally 
comes, and half the posts just say stuff like "uhhh, hey, where's the jam?". 
  I was beginning to think that Skadz banned me for calling him "Skidmarks" 
one too many times.  I dunno. Nevermind.

After reading (or, skimming over, rather) that big "Scenes from QR's Past" 
thing, I thought of something; I'm eternally grateful that I could never 
stand QR in the first place.  The only thing I've EVER heard QR fans discuss 
is "how much the new album sucks".  And this goes back quite a few 
albums......

Woah....  I bought my Playstation back in the early summer of '98 and it
came with a dual-shock keyboard.
Hell, every Playstation box I've ever seen since '98 has a bright red "DUAL
SHOCK" on the box  :)
I still think the guy who posted about that before just didn't realize he
could push the button on the controller and use the joystick to steer the
cars in Gran Turismo  :)

Only one problem with this: Not all PSXs come with a dual shock controller,
only the new ones.  So anybody with a PlayStation that's more than a few

Pro-Pain is a fine economic fuel.  I have no problem with Pro-pain.  Without

Many bands have gotten dropped even when they did go gold (Warrant). And 
there is a difference between shipping Gold (500,000 units shipped to stores) 
and actually selling 500,000 units at stores. Gold records are determined by 
the RIAA, not by direct sales. So it's possible to get a gold record for an 
album which has only sold 300,000 copies (see Megadeth). 

My  point here is that their record sales are not great in the U.S., which 
 everyone know of course. My question here is, is there any danger of them 
 possibly losing their record contract due to low sales does anyone know?

There is always the danger of getting dropped unless you are a superstar 
artist. With the recent merges, record company execs got canned left and 
right. If your A&R guy  happens to be a victim of that, where does that leave 
you? Or if the vice-president in charge of marketing happened to be a big fan 
of yours and then he got a better paying job at another label, what then? Or 
if your label as a whole decides to drop rock acts (see Relativity) and 
concentrate on R&B, then what? The point is that there are a lot of factors 
that go in to determining whether or not a band gets dropped (or are not 
picked up for an option to extend their contract) besides sales. But all 
things being equal, a band will usually be kept by a label as long as they 
are making money for the label. That is determined by many factors, including 
the costs of actually making the record (fronting the money for the recording 
of the albums, the manufacturing of the albums, etc), the promotion 
(advertising, marketing, video, radio, etc), and touring expenses (if 
allocated by the label). If that amount is less than the $$$ generated by 
income from the band (which could include everything from album sales to 
publishing to merchandising, depending on your contract and your lawyer) then 
they will stay.

 Or is it just that their record sales overseas make up for their low sales 
here? 

Again, it depends on their contract. Overseas royalties are usually 
significantly less than domestic royalties, so they would have to sell a HELL 
of a lot of records overseas to make cover their debt. Most US bands sell a 
fraction of their domestic sales to the overseas market, but there are 
exceptions (like Mr. Big and possibly DT) where US artists sell MORE overseas 
than here. 

 OR is it possible that theyjust don't get much money at all from the record 
 company and make it mostly by touring?
 
Artists such as DT, who don't sell a ton of records, who don't have a 
$500,000 video premiring on MTV every week, who don't have their faces and 
sounds plastered all over the place, do make a lot of their money from 
touring. It's their lifeblood. But again, the money to finance tours comes 
from the record company (unless you're signed to Magna Carta) and is 
considered a lean against your royalties (meaning it is "recoupable"). If a 
band makes a couple thousand dollars a night playing clubs like Toads Place 
or small theaters (like the Palladium), that is money in their pocket (after 
expenses), but the money it took to create the shows is taken from your 
potential royalties account, therefore forcing you to sell even more records 
(which touring is supposed to do) before you'll see a dime in royalties from 
sales.

No, I don't think there is.  Have you tried e-mailing Warner Brothers
Publications to see if they actually do or not.

I was bought the IaW TAB by a friend as a present.  The chords are not
always named accurately sus2 instead of add9 for example.  The score does
not match the TAB in many places and it's accuracy is only average, to my
ears,(the score is generally more accuratethat the TAB. )   I think this is
pretty weak, especially as JP was involved.  This is one DT purchase that I
believe to be sub-standard.  Put it like this I would not want inaccurate
transcriptions of my music put out when I have supposedly contributed to the
book.
