I know the guy, Steve Meiggs who played bass on Grandmother's Spaceship... Actually, I was thinking of Scaterd Few's original bassist, Omar Domkus, who played on Out of the Attic, Sin Disease (my personal fave Few disc), and Jawboneofanass. I remember seeing Scaterd Few on the ...ass tour, standing there amazed at the different and creative sounds that Omar was getting out of his rig. I do agree that ...Spaceship just kills. Kind of mixes the good elements of ...ass and Sin Disease. I caught the band at Cornerstone a couple years ago. The newer members were great, though I'm nto sure if I am really into the whole space theme. I personally like the older ...Few image better. Anyway, for anyone interested in checking out some very creative punk-type stuff (a lot fo weirdness thrown in :), Scaterd Few would be a great start, if you can find their stuff. Also, the person that replied to my original post (sorry, can't remember the name) mentioned Spyglass Blue. Some great Bowie-esque kind of goth (I hate that term, though) stuff. Dale R. Can this be true?? After reading all about all our problems with radio-stations, recently, I just can't imagine this is true... >> Well, I've never heard DT on the radio here in L.A. (aside from PMU back in the day). But on the FII tour, they did two nights at the House Of Blues, which is pretty impressive for a band that receives no airplay in a city that is very trend-oriented. Part of the reason that DT doesn't get any airplay here is that we don't have a rock station, which is sad considering that at the beginning of the decade we had two big ones (KNAC and Pirate Radio). I just finished listening to _Focus_ for the trillionth time (okay, just a slight exaggeration, okay? ;-), and I honestly say that it is even more impressive than the first time I heard a snippet from "Textures." Everyone in this band is amazing... Wow, I can drone on and on, but check the website: http://veilmaya.org/cynic/ It has not been updated for over six months, but it still links to a plethora of pertinent information. Oh, and Aghora is amazing, too. Perhaps I should state why this band is my "perennial favorite." They're technically unmatchable and have tons of "groove." There. When I first heard FII, I thought it was an incredible album. I think everyone should stop complaining and just enjoy the music. There IS progressive stuff on there too, most of which happened to be Sherinian-inspired actually. I enjoy the whole album as I do all other DT releases. It seems that people always have something to complain about instead of just finding the good in things. IMO, LitS is one of the best DT songs, and there is a certain groove on that album in songs like JLMB that make it addictive. Also, don't forget that FII is probably the easiest DT album for Joe Public to listen to...if I ever try to turn someone on to DT, I'd start with FII...it has the best of both worlds. ..but SFAM still kicks it's ass. :) A--d--a--M ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Nov 1999 07:47:05 +0100 From: Bernd Basmer To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Superior demo now available without Flash Message-ID: Hi! It is split up into a lesson section where Steve and Vic discuss and demonstrate the techniques used in each song, and then the song section where each song is transcribed in full, with a few exceptions; vamp sections, intro solo figures, and solo accompaniments are not always scored in full, i.e. the transcriber was feeling *lazy*! I agree with what you say about Steve being the harmonic-god;his solo feature"Moonridge" kills! If you don't already have his instructional books, they are a must! He's twice the teacher as he is a player. If you want to check out Pino Palladino it will entail sitting through some pretty bad brit-pop schlock; he played on a number of albums by Paul Young and Phil Collins through the 80's and early 90's. Some quick song references: Young's "Everytime You Go Away" and Collins' "I Wish it Would Rain Down". Stellar Bassist! I'd try and check him out on the web to get a more detailed discography; I read one in Bass Player several years ago but can't remember alot of the stuff he did. I've been a very dissapointed man for the most part his fall, except NIN surprised me with one of the best albums of the decade with The Fragile. Both of my favorite bands, Queensryche and Dream Theater, have very much dissapointed me. Queensryche puts out an album with 10 copies of the same song, i mean, that album has no variety in tempos, textures, nothing. The 1st two songs are okay, but the rest, is dreadful. Now, on to DT, and, well, SFAM sounds exactly like what I feared it would sound like with Jordan on keyboards. I know there are alot of fans of his here, but I'm not one of them. He does okay on LTE1, but on LTE2 i didn't care for him as much, and with DT, he's nowhere. He has no soul, no groove, and I cringe everytime I hear him try to solo. His sound choices are dreadful in several spots, they sound so FAKE(yeah, i know, it really is fake, but i hope you know what i mean, i can't describe it right.) Derek had the ability to really rock, and it showed on FII and ACOS. KevMo could too, but he was alot more laidback with it, and I think of all the guys he is the one who could have made SFAM great. Now, I give DT credit for making a fan's album, this is what alot of people have been crying for since Met. 1 was on Images and Words, and they've also been crying for a concept album. I admire DT for their efforts, but IMO, they didn't succeed. I know alot of people here subscribe to the theory that anything that is musically accessible is bad, but I'm not that way, and I don't find this album to be accessible at all. I've listened to it all the way through 3 times, and I couldn't walk away any of those times remembering a single thing I heard. It was like one big jumbled up blob in my head. I mean, I've read what many of you have said about FII and that having "songs" means selling out trying to make a hit, but I'm sorry, IMO there has to be some base to the music, I mean, the greatest concept albums of all time (The Wall, Operation Mindcrime, even other solid but not legendary ones such as APSOG) all have some kind of recognizable songs in them. You walk away, singing the songs, fingering the licks in it, it made some kind of musical impression. I'll give Labrie, Portnoy, and Petrucci credit, they played their asses off, but it just sounds like them jamming while Labrie sings a long newspaper article or something. Myung I can't hear most of the time, he's not mixed near as well as he was in FII, and like I said before, Jordan, while the kid is talented, does not belong in a rock band, he belongs in a progressive group like Renaissance or in a classical concert hall. NOT in DT, he turns them into a band full of Yngwie's...as for the story, i haven't had the patience to figure it out, maybe one day i will. One thing I did like, was the use of the chorus, it's a branching out that I'd like to see more of from them. As for the talk about FII, I really don't have any problems with it, in fact, it's definitely my favorite album of theirs. Why??? because Derek rocks his ass off, he grooves so much and drives the band so well. I also love the songs on the album. LitS, ToT, TAMP, HK, PS, NM, JLMB, all are great songs. And LitS and ToT were very much "prog" type songs but I could still walk away remembering the songs, their words, and their music. The album was excellently produced IMO as well. I don't care if it had more "hit-potential" songs on the album. Very many prog (and jazz) fans seem to think that they have to be on a pedestal and feel better than everyone, and don't want anyone else listening to the same thing they are. I'm not that way, I want people to listen to better stuff than Puff Daddy and the Backdoor Boys. I'd love for more people to dig DT, and that doesn't make them a worse band. Popular is not always bad. Now, I haven't been reading the Jam lately, in fact, I haven't since the gag rule was implemented on this list regarding the new album, and I just now read about two jams back. I'll say this, probably if I would have heard some people slamming the album, I would have gone in with much lower expectations and maybe not have come out so dissapointed. But, the past is past. Well, I'm sure I've pissed alot of people off with this message, but oh well, it's an album that I'm dissapointed about, and I'm curious to see what reaction I get. np: Nine Inch Nails "The Fragile-Right" ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Nov 1999 09:39:51 +0000 (GMT) From: Graham Borland To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: SFAM at no. 12 Message-ID: ReSent-From: Graham Borland ReSent-To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Metal Hammer magazine here in the UK has placed SFAM in 12th place in its "Top 20 albums of 1999" feature. -- Graham Borland Picsel Technologies Ltd email_address_removed Glasgow, Scotland ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Nov 1999 10:53:45 +0100 From: "Vandenabeele, Hein" To: "'ytsejam@torchsong.com'" Message-ID: >would be it. Did it ever, even for a second, occur to you that there may actually be... *gasp* people who HONESTLY DISLIKE FII? Just a thought... but then, that word and the Jam are rarely, if ever, associated aren't they. By the way, IMO, the definition of a "bad album" or a "negative review" is when the BAD OUTWEIGHS THE GOOD. The reason they don't concentrate on the good of the album, is because in there opinion, there was such a ratio. In other words, they thought that OVERALL, the album was bad, and they're going to express their OPINION that this is so. It's really all very simple. As for me.. I like a lot of FII, especially LITS, but there's a whole handful of songs on there that I really don't like; not being picky, or wanting the music to be a certain way, but finding them unpleasant to listen to.... Although, an opinion about Metallica's S&M. This album was incredible the first time I heard it, especially the first CD, but with a closer look, I think some tracks do not fit with she orchestra (the outlaw torn for example). The atmosphere of the song was particularily strong on the Load album, and I think it has lost it (maybe because of the vocals which are especially bad on this track). However, some are really cool, RTL hasn't been so heavy for a long time, and this is maybe the first album on a long list which will include a REAL (not synth) complete symphony. Maybe Metallica's is not the first one (remember Rage?) but it will be the most influent one. Well, that's all folks. ---------------------- "Come on God, answer me.
