His problem is that he has two video cards, a Mach64 and a Voodoo3. He would LIKE to have the Voodoo3 as his default X video card, but Xconfigurator will only see the Mach64 as the only card. Normally, I wouldn't find this a problem and would merely remove the Mach64 until the correct server had been located and installed, but it's a built-in card, so that's impossible. Is there a way to get Xconfigurator to see the Voodoo3 without having to go in and edit text files manually? He asked b/c I've been playing the shit out of this today and DT's other albums over the course of the past year. So anyway, I said "yeah it is" and steeled myself, expecting him to insult them again. He then said "Ya know, I'm starting to kinda come around to them. They kinda have some elements of old school Metallica (keep in mind my brother is mostly familiar with PMU) and just classic metal." He's not a big metalhead, so to hear him say these things was kinda odd, but welcome nonetheless. I guess I can add another list of new fans for DT I've made, but I wouldn't expect him to go out and buy any of their CDs... ===== *Trent "There's colors on the street. Red, white & blue. Why does a band have to be confined to what theirs fans (or anyone else for that matter) percieve what they are. Not only doesn't that make sense but it is also, in a way, selfish of the fans. I don't understand that why fans always assume that the band they listen is THEIR band and should only make music that THEY are accustomed to hearing. It's not fair thatr a band should have to make music to fit their fans perception of what that band should be. The fans do not decide what music a band should make. If a band would do this then there is no real point in them going on. It's not really a creative outlet at that point. I don't think a band should be limted by other's perceptions of them. -Mike ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Nov 1999 02:21:48 EST From: email_address_removed To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Re: Load/Reload Debate- again Message-ID: >>Yeah, but my point is that many Metallica listeners WOULD enjoy Load and >>Reload if another artist did them. They don't grab the attention, and you can find the only good bits done better elsewhere. Both 1928 and TDoE sound like a low-rent DT ripoff band. The album works much better without them. >< No no no. Overture 1928 serves a great purpose. It's an overture. It's an "introduction to a musical dramatic work." Also it doesn't hurt, for my listening pleasure at least, that I think it's one of the best instruemntals DT's ever done. Definitely ranks up there with Eve and Hell's Kitchen. Now as for TDoE, I coulnd't agree more. I find that piece very boring and uneccessary. It's not acting as an introductory or as closure or as anything, it's just "there." Doesnt fit in my opinion. TDoE isn't MEANT to act as an introduction nor as a closure to any thematic material - it's a transition. And IMHO, it works perfectly - THAT is why the little player piano thing is in there; it serves as a fitting transition from one scene to the next in the traditional musical method of the day - a player piano. ------------------------------------------------- Andrew Coutermarsh email_address_removed http://cout.dhs.org/ Cloak on IRC ICQ: 2513441 ------------------------------------------------- If Helen Keller were psychic, would we say that she had a fourth sense? ------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Nov 1999 12:19:43 CET From: "Schnipp -" To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: SfaM - possible running order Message-ID: hi all, I was thinking that maybe through Overture 1928 one could get the running order, since there are bits of a lot of the songs in it. I have the BRIGHT SIZE LIFE, and man this one is a must have! Very unique guitar playing, quite impressive, BUT not rockihn' shred-fest, it's more subtle, gentle playing. The technique and the music on this album is really, really very atmospheric. It would be crazy if someone doesn;'t enjoy this kind of slower music, because it's really good. I think many isolated parts of the album sound really LAME, but the album is so good that a few lame parts don't ruin it. In TDoE, I could do without the bit starting at about 4'45" into it and going on for about the next thirty seconds. They're really cooking and building up to a big finish, and then this part comes along and meaninglessly breaks the momentum. It sounds like if DT were a wind-up toy, and they had been wound up and playing for the maximum duration and are just winding down. VERY anti-climactic. Maybe this is what the band was going for, but that doesn't mean I have to agree. And it totally DOES matter what fits and what doesn't fit in a song. That's the difference between a concise artistic statement and just flailing wildly. >The synth brass >part, for example- I was very suprised to hear that many fans "dissapproved" >of that part...."Oh no- not a FUSION keyboard solo! >gimme a break. I was not surprised at all. I like neither the fusion solo nor the riff over which it's played. The instrumental section in Beyond this Life goes on a bit too long in my opinion. And even worse than that, it justifies my greatest fear about Jordan Rudess joining the band: it's too derivative of LTE. I like (for the most part) Jordan's sounds for the LTE stuff, but his bouncy little percussive sounds just don't cut it for DT. It sounds like LTE and then suddenly turns into DT for the buildup to the final chorus. Of course, if that fusion solo and the surrounding parts were in an LTE song, I probably wouldn't like it either. And IMHO, it works perfectly - Well, I guess I'll throw my hat in the ring, even though it's apparently non-Kosher here. :) I think TDoE is a technical wonder. I can listen >at< it time and again and go, "How the hell do they do that shit?" But when I listen >to< it, it seems dull, lifeless, and self-indulgent, like alot of the LTE stuff. I mean, there's no point to it. The same thing goes with alot of the first half of the album. I end up skipping BTL once the solo section starts, same with Fatal Tragedy ofttimes. I will agree though, Overture 1928 smokes, but that should be a given. It's a solidly constructed, catchy instrumental. I think that's why I like Awake most of all of their albums. All of the songs tend to be short and to the point. And every damn song on that album is fuckin' great. All of the above is IMO, anyway, like any of you in disagreement couldn't figure that out anyway. :) But you sure as hell would use it as ammunition if I hadn't. heheheh.
