Message-ID: <003701bf2928$f71f0860$message_id_removed> I have gone on record here and elsewhere since SFaM was released as being disappointed in it, especially in light of all the exceptionally strong progmetal releases of the past few years. So, I'll just take a brief second to say that I've eventually come around and done a complete 180 on the whole thing. I don't know why - music is something that shouldn't be overanalyzed - but it took WAAAAY too many listens to warm up to the album, but I'm finally there. I too am now compelled to play it repeatedly - an state of affairs that if suggested to me after the first ten or so listens, would have sent me peals of laughter. I'm on board. SFaM is a pretty wild ride. Mike ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Nov 1999 09:25:11 -0500 From: "Mike Patrick" To: Subject: SFaM and ytsejammer reading habits... Message-ID: <003901bf292b$e6901cc0$message_id_removed> All this talk/speculation/analysis of SFaM's plot and the delivery thereof has really got me thinking about some of the reading discussions that have gone on here in the past. Bear with me, because I'm not at all sure what the point of this post will be. I know there are a lot of readers on this list, and obviously, many of us are enjoying the 'literary' qualities of SFaM's plot. So, on one level, I'm curious as to what everyone around here reads. I KNOW that more than a few DT fans are RABID Robert Jordan fans, and his name has come up on the Jam from time to time. I don't intend to turn this into a 'everyone defend Robert Jordan' thread, and I'm not really looking for responses, but I consider Jordan to be long-winded (to say the least), addicted to mindless incident, and just generally not that good. There's SO MUCH stuff out there that is outstanding - classics, modern literature, etc; reading for a lifetime...Dickens, Proust, James, Lawrence, Joyce, Roth, Delillo, Updike, etc., etc., etc. For anyone who loves the familiar character/evolving story aspect of Wheel of Time, I would stress the following: The single best series of ANY kind I've read is Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin stories of which there is currently 20! It's about a Captain (and subsequent ranks) in the British navy during the Napoleonic wars and his ship surgeon/intelligence officer/botanist/general renaissance man and their trials and tribulations throughout the roughly fifteen year conflict. Reads like literature and Tom Clancy mixed in a blender... Thanks for indulging in my mini-rant. I have a way of nagging people who I know love to read - it's just the way I am... Mike P.S. If you like SFaM, read Dostoyevsky. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 07 Nov 1999 08:27:23 PST From: "Partha Mukhopadhyay" To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: inexactitude is no crime, is it? I don't mean literally that the album was made for us and us only but I can't help but feel that as well as filling DT desires to do a concept album it is also there because they know how much their fans will enjoy it. What I'm saying is if someone like the spice girls released a concept album noone would give a shit it would just be an album with a recurring theme that noone would think much about. However since DT brought SFAM out the ytsejam has been given a second life of people discussing the meaning of and the plot of the album in some detail. I can imagine that Mike is reading the jam now wth a big smile on his face as we try to figure out what its all about. It's a bit like when the Beatles released Sergent Pepper (one of the albums from the SFAM inspiration corner), all the press were saying that the beatles had dried up because they had been in the studio for so long and no new material had been heard. At the same time Paul Mcartney was in Abbey Road reading the papers thinking just wait till they hear this. It's because of things like this that make it great to be a DT fan. If Mike or any other DT member is reading this I would just like to congratulate them on a fucking amazing album. It's the album of the year by far and probably the best album I've heard in years. Maybe I'm just getting jaded in my old age (18 yrs) but I can't help but think that DT placing so high is anything more than a fluke. I'm not trying to offend anyone here, but how many N'Suck and Backdoor Boys fans can you picture listening to either version of "Home"? I can't. And I don't think it's likely to happen (and I'm by no means complaining). >< Well obviously. DT will never be as big as those "bands." No one would ever expect them to be, and no would ever want them to. But I believe it is possible for DT to become maybe as big as Rush here in the US. I wouldn't say *as* big as Rush; DT'll never play stadiums. But I do think'll they'll become bigger then they are right now. Not much bigger, but big enough that they'll be around a good long time, maintain a strong fan base, get the occasional airplay, and be well-known around the metal world. I really don't see it happen, but I do think it's possible. >< DT probably aren't going to compromise everything they've worked so hard for up to now just to have a hit record. I'd love to be wrong, but I think #60 is as high as we'll ever DT go. But hey, 73 is definitley good. How high did the rest of DT's catalog place on the Billboard? Anyone know? >< Awake debuted somewhere in the 30s, but this was before the whole "internet" thing. I actually think that SFAM was their best debut. I could be wrong, but finishing #2 in internet sales is pretty damn good no matter how you look at it. And if the regular Billboard charts included internet sales (assuming it's more than just CDNow sales), DT would be *much* higher. Probably up where Awake debuted. >< Yuouuhuuoooo DT made it again :-))))))))))))))))))))))) They've entered the German top 100 album charts at possiotion "8" !!! Bush's new one is on 19th possition and Stone Temple Pilots's at 42th :-) Germany is not like USA. The most people dosen't go with the wind (at least in the music scene). That is not to say that Gary has left the band, nor is it to say that he was fired. However, according to the recent press release, they went separate ways on good terms. "I had a great time singing with the band and I wish Eddie, Alex and Michael all the best. I'll see 'em in Boston," said Gary, while Eddie commented, "Gary is a brother and he and I will continue to have a personal and musical relationship." Concerning the album, the band went through three producers and finished nine songs, with approximately twenty written. The tour was to begin in the Spring of next year. Obviously, that project has ceased indefinitely. Eddie Van Halen continues to maintain a good relationship with Gary, and Gary with Ed. This is refreshing considering the controversy over the previous two splits. What is not known: The exact reason or events leading up to the breakup is still in question, and unconfirmed. Whether or not any of the nine recorded tracks will ever see the light of day remains to be seen. It is also unclear what this means for the remaining members of Van Halen, given that Eddie was very vocal about this being the third and final incarnation of Van Halen. It is not known whether Eddie and Gary will complete any other work together in the future. And finally, Cherone.com will not post any information as fact until it can be confirmed.
