As far as the story goes, I touch on theories, clues in the lyircs, the House, possible motives, continuity, past/present lyrics, and more. Just saying this because this is a long post (it'll have to be two parts), so it's like an index so you can skip ahead to read what you wanna read. First, the music: One of the things that impressed me the most were the backing vocals. First, I didn't think Mike was a good singer, live or in studio. He really shines on SFAM, though. And I just really liked the fact that backing vox were actually done and done well this time. In the past, they mostly just layered James vox 2 or 3 times or whatever, and it didn't really add much. But this time, they had MP and JP singing the majority of the backing vox instead of James, and they actually used some harmonies this time, instead of singing the same melodies as James did. I know Mike is a big fan of bands that use backing vox and harmonies often and well (Spocks Beard, Kings X, Galactic Cowboys), so I guess he had a big say in that. I especially like the backing vocals in Home: "Love! Deceit! Death!" Brilliance in backing vocals. Whoever heard of such a thing? It seems like if there's one "unpopular" song on this album, it's Through Hey Eyes. If someone doesn't like one song on SFAM, it's that one. I'm sorry, but I love it. First of all, the "R&B" intro is perfect. Of course that singing can become annoying if it's dragged out or used for the wrong kind of music, but it's perfectly placed here. Total Floyd. Great stuff. And John's guitars on this song, particularly during the intro, are sooo emotional. It's right up there with State of Grace. I guess I'm a sucker for that kind of playing. If there's one thing I could do without, it's the "ahh, ahh, ahh" at the end. I've been hearing more negative comments about Jordan than I thought I would. The only thing negative I'd have to say was his overplaying in the beginning of "One Last Time." It starts out very slow, and his playing there seemed completely inappropriate. His solos were great, especially in Overture 1928. That horn section in BTL was kind of annoying, but that's it. The ragtime/honky-tonk thing in TDoE may not've fit, but it was still nice. He has a huge catalogue of sounds. My only complaints? This disc isn't completely cheese-free. There's the obligatory "oh yeah yeah!" in Beyond This Life. I will concede that there may be a little too much shredding/overplaying, but hell, I don't care. Nothing's perfect. Also, I like The Dance of Eternity, but I don't understand why it's there. Overture is there for a reason. It establishes the year and acts as an introduction to the story of Victoria and her two lovers. Plus, I think it's DTs best instrumental. I like TDoE, but I don't really think it serves a purpose. Know that those are my only complaints of the whole album. Which I think is pretty damn good. Every album probably has at least 5 different things that a person could do without. Misc.: For the record, the therapist is done by Terry Brown. Mike confirmed this. He at first said "notice we purposely didn't credit the voice," but at the chat the other night, he confirmed it. So that's at least one thing we know I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but Elektra deserves a ton of credit. They gave DT complete creative control for this album. That is very rare. I always figured they don't really care for DT and they're just stuck in a contract. I guess I was wrong. I was disheartened to see some people saying things like, "The band finally gave in to the demands of the fans!" and "Mike was listening to our demands" and etc. This album was not made due to the demands of the fans. That is the definition of sell-out. They made this album because they wanted to. I sure hope they didn't make it because they thought that they had to cater to the fans who didn't like FII. No band should ever make an album because the fans want it. That's what live albums and videos are far. When you're writing a song, the fans are the last thing you should be thinking of. I think I've come up with about 10 different theories. I'll run down some of the ones that not many have come up with. I actually have some evidence of each of these. Some, it's only a little; some its a lot. If you would like me to go into detail about anyone, let me know. Nicholas is the reincarnation of Edward; the Hypnotist is the reincarnation of Victoria. Victoria gets her revenge at the end. Nicholas takes his own life at the end. The Hypnotist is startled to find Nicholas' dead body, thus the scream. Nicholas somehow knows he's going to die soon. The others are just a little too absurd. Maybe Nicholas is just a naive guy who had some pointless dreams, so he went to a hypnotist, and the hypnotust capitalized on Nicholas naivety, so he made up this story about a past life. Why did the hypnotist then kill Nicholas? Maybe Nick skips out on the bill. =] One thing I thought odd was at the mp.com chat, someone asked Mike who did the orgasm. I assume they meant who recorded it, but maybe Mike misunderstood and thought he meant which character, cause Mike said "it's a little too early to reveal that." There are some huge clues in the lyrics at the end of Finally Free. At least I think they're clues. During the Sleeper's part in FF, the lyrics read: "A blinding light comes into view An old soul exchanged for a new A familiar voice comes shining through" To me, that sounds like Victoria and Julian desending into heaven, but who is the familiar voice? The therapist? How does that fit in there? Also: "Well meet again my friend someday SOON" - insinuating that either Nicholas knows he is going to die soon, or he's planning on taking his own life. But why does he say "We'll meet again"? He's never met Victoria. Is he talking about Julian? Still, I think some huge clues lie in the lyrics of Metropolis 1, and if they weren't so damn ambiguous, maybe I could make sense of them and figure something out. I've noticed a ton of continuity problems. If Nicholas is regressing and seeing scenes from his memory, how is he visiting Victoria's grave and talking to an old man at a house? He's supposed to be observing scenes from his memory, and here he is interacting with people and such. This I don't understand. Also, how come a certain character's lyrics are in the third person? Eg: In Finally Free, The Sleeper's lyrics read "As their bodies lie still...all their fears disappear" etc. And what about the lyrics in the past and present? Are Nicholas' italicized (past) lyrics mean he's in regression? If so, then his present lyrics mean he's not in regression, but awake in reality? Another thing I'd like to touch upon is "One Last Time." These lyrics confuse the fuck out of me. I think some big clues lie here, too. All of Nicholas' lines from "here I am inside his home" to "His words I cannot hear" I don't understand what's going. Read those lyrics. Whose home is he in? Is he in the present or seeing a scene from his memory? What is he being shown that he's always known? And what's most confusing, but possibly very important to the story are the lines "The walls disappear as some woman is screaming/a man pleads forgiveness/his words I cannot hear" Those lyrics seem completely unreleated to the rest of the story. I can't figure out what that's supposed to represent. Which leads me to another question...what is this house they keep mentioning? Victoria and Julian were killed outdoors - we hear rain and crickets and the footspes of someone walking on gravel (which sound like the same footsteps of Nicholas' when he enters his home), and then later the footsteps of someone running on cement. Also, the lyrics say them met "in a pathway out of view." But what is the house? It's mentioned in SDV, FT, and OLT. From SDV, we read that Nicholas is familiar with the house and that it's haunting. In Fatal Tragedy, we read that there's an old man at the house, probably the person who resides there. But he says he traveled to "another home." Maybe there are two houses. And the old man says "a girl was murdered here." Does he literally mean here in the house? Because it really sounds to me like Victoria was killed outside. Finally, One Last Time is the mnost confusing. just read what I wrote above. "Here I am inside his home"- the old man's home? This house apparently brings back memories and holds all the clues. Interesting... If the hypnotist is Edward and he kills Nicholas (who is Victoria), what's his motive? He killed Victoria in the past, so he's got to do it again? What's the point? As the hypnotist said, "Death is not the end, only a transition." Why kill Nicholas? His soul will transcend. Maybe that's the dance of eternity. Or maybe Edward is still mad at Victoria. It seems like a very weak motive, which is why I doubt it. Also, how does the hypnotist know who he was in a past life? From I've read from several members of the band, there is a second reincarnation in that last scene, so the hypnotist is definitely the reincarnation of one one of the characters, I just don't think it's Edward. I think it's Victoria. What is the point of making Edward a Senator? Is it incest? How killed Kennedy? The debate rages on. But do I really care "whodunit"? No. For me, the music is the message, and what a huge fucking message it is. In the past I have complained about James' singing, but on the new album he is good, and I can even understand most of the lyrics without having to resort to the booklet. The story seems fairly interesting, but when I listen to the new songs I get totally engulfed by the music, so that the lyrics become secondary, and I'll be buggered if I'm going to sit and try and figure out what's going on when instead I can be completely letting myself drown in wave after wave of wonderful music. Sure, the guys put in some work coming up with this plot, and I'm sure they are pissing themselves at some of the ideas people are coming up with. But what about the people who have English as a foreign language, and who may not pick up or spot all of the clues? I'm certain that they, like me, will listen to the music first, and then perhaps bother with the lyrics (if at all). Just my view. This CD is something that opens a new way to the music, showing that can be someone that unify the sound into one masterpiece in an ecletic and concrete way, that can not only be just a bunch of songs that kick all asses in the world, but can also be a perfect history, with a complete intersection of the music and the history, bringing us to inside the history as well. I guess that DT reach a level that is hard to any band of this planet reach. I'm not afraid to say that because I've got friends that have never heard DT and the heard SFAM for the first time, and they loved it. The greatest thing is that if you are not a fan, the album is great, and if you are a fan, the album is perfect. I'd like to say that I'm proud to say that I am a DT fan for 6 years and I hope to be surprised this way much more times. Carry On.... I thought the WEGA's were pretty awesome until I started to read reviews and talk to the guys at A/V shops. I settled on the JVC 32" TV (not the PIP version) for $650. I gotta admit I was sold on the WEGA's but after comparing them with other TV's running DVD's and satellite boxes the WEGA's just look terrible, and they are horribly overpriced. In fact I learned that the JVC's have a much better repair record than SONY. Don't get me wrong, I love SONY TV's I have a 21" that my wife and I have owned for 15 years. It's a great bedroom TV. But I think the SONY of the 80's was much better than the Sony of the 90's. Hello, I am in the market to buy a new 32" TV. I am looking at the SONY KV-32FS10. It is the totally flat WEGA trinitron tube. The sucker looks really sweet. Great, no, INCREDIBLE picture. What are the reviews for this sucker? Anyone have one? It has simulated surround sound, not sure how well it works though :-) I have found the TV for $1299. Alot for a 32" TV, but once you see the picture, you are hooked. I am sure there are a ton of audio/video maniacs on this list!
