I'm going to point out a couple of quotes in The Dance Of Eternity that I thought were completely cool! 1. The rythymic reference I'm refering to first is one that Portnoy himself explained in a clinic... he said that part of Met Pt 1 in the middle section was in 5/8 5/8 7/8 5/8 7/8 5/8 5/8 7/8 in that order. I've heard this in Met pt 2 - a direct quote rythymically, at least! 2. And in Later parts, I also hear more from the same section but can't really explain it. But I do know that it comes from the section right before the 5,5,7,5,7,5,5,7 part. And has anyone else noticed that One Last Time starts out with a jam that can be heard in the middle of The Killing Hand on the "Hollow Years" single??? I've noticed a couple of old "jams" that have made it into Met Pt 2. All in all.. I'd say this album is one of the all-time milestones in DT's songwriting and playing. I've done nothing but do shameless promotion to my friends and family to get this album. This one *will* last forever! I love this little part in TDoE. I think it shows that when DT were writing this album they were having FUN. Sure it has moments of serious tension that is built in the story, but if it was all serious, well it would seem a little pretentious (to me anyway). after 5 full listens i feel that this album will grow to be my fav out of all of them. later all ===== John Parks email_address_removed All of your life you've been waiting, for someone to touch you inside, with your life passing by your just one rock shy of a landslide. *Neal Morse* __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Message-ID: Why is it that everyone uses the JFK reference *only* as a reference to the storyline? There are a few clues as to when the end of the CD takes place. I think it takes place back in the 1963. 1. It doesn't really sound like a newer model car (one from the 1990's), it rumbles too much...the door is even squeaking and loud. Could it be a 1960's ear car? 2. The television is an old one, listen to it when he changes the channel and turns it off. It's old style TV...like the 1960's? 3. The JFK reference may be a character reference or something, giving this whole thing an air of Greek tragedy, but I think it's mostly a reference to the year. It's 1963, which would put Nicholas at 35. Sounds like a thirty-five year-old to me :o) 4. Puts on an old vinyl (because that's the hot media at the time). Is there anything to *not* support this? Ed then tells the police his watertight story > > Take care, > Phil I don't quite see how Julian laying on top of Victoria would indicate a suicide...I think the suicide note was Edward's main piece of evidence to imply that Julian had shot Victoria and then killed himself. Also, the lyrics that Julian sings at the end of Finally Free make sense with the idea that Julian is not dead after Victoria is shot...he crawls to her as he is dying to "lay down with her one last time". Also, there seem to be some inconsistencies with the "fight scene" at the end of Finally Free and I'm curious what people think about this. Judging by the sound effects, the scene seems to unfold as follows: Edward surprises J and V at their secret rendezvous. A fight ensues between the two men and E shoots J twice. V, seeing J shot, screams and E turns on her. Here we have the line "Open your eyes, Victoria" (some have said they hear "*Close* your eyes, Victoria, but I personally don't hear that)...E then shoots V twice as well. The thing I don't get is this: if E is planning on framing J for the murder of V and then making it look like suicide, wouldn't it be sorta suspicious that someone committing suicide was shot TWICE and presumably not in the head? Suicide note and 20's forensics aside, I would think that even 1928 cops would think it a bit odd that someone would take two shots to finish themselves off. Just curious if anyone else has wondered if there were some holes in E's plan (considering how he carried it off) that would have probably been discovered by the cops upon investigation... Puts on an old vinyl (because that's the hot media at the time). i also wondered about the record - it has lots of scratches and pops, which means its not an audiophile enjoying the musical perfection of meticulously kept analog vinyl - it is someone playing vinyl because that is all that is available at the time. also, the kind of music ON the record - it sounds very dated. i am no music history buff so i can't tell you what kind of music it is or when it came from, but other than the soundtrack of a Final Fantasy game, it is not something anyone would release nowadays. so it must be nicholas sometime in the 1960s putting on the latest hit on the top 40 that week or something :) it is, of course, the melody from one of the tracks on SFAM... i cant quite remember which, but i remember it sounded familiar. moo. *** END OF TRANSMISSION *** ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Oct 1998 13:07:50 -0700 From: "Korg Ecksthrey" To: Subject: DT just fookin rokz nadz. Are you listening to music for the accolades of the general public? Would the music somehow sound better to you if the general public approved? You like music the way you like it, I like music the way I like it, and Steve Z likes it the way he likes it. Not wrong. Different. - Serious = Bad? Does serious music deserve to be lampooned? No! For me, it's never "just music", it's an important part of my life. But that's just my *gasp* opinion. Imagine that. Personally, I like my music to be very serious, public opinion be damned. Hell, lots of people like this music *because* it's the anti general-public genre. It's a dirty secret that lots of people like this stuff precisely due to the fact that your "average" person doesn't. Sets 'em apart. I can even admit that it plays a small part in my own enjoyment. - Specific SFAM thoughts Everyone has been ejaculating over how this is the cd of the year, etc. I am going to have to disagree. The second half is certainly the stronger of the two, in my estimation, but, as usual, LaBrie's vocals just detract so much from the exquisitely performed music. I have been on record around here since jam #500 or so as not liking him, and nothing has changed. He just doesn't convey any of the emotion to me, as a singer such as Alder, Khan, et al. would have. I got my first "chill" from listening to this disc around sometime in track 12. By way of comparison, I was feeling the chills during part one of APSOG. Of course music preference is nothing but opinion, anyway, so feel free to disagree at your leisure. When Edward shows up to the fight scene, (about 4:16 in Finally Free) his footsteps sound gravelly and crunchy. What do the footfalls of the person in the house sound like? Aye. gravelly and crunchy. In a living room? It's gotta be da shoes. So... There's a little bit of scene play in the end. Nicholas pulls up in his car jamming to Finally Free. He shuts the car off, music dies. Soon you hear his footsteps (nice cloppy ones) going up the stairs and unlocking the door. CUT. It's like a scene change in a movie. Now we revert back to what the Hypnotherapist is doing inside Nicholas' house. He's got those gravelly footsteps. First watching TV, then clicks it off and pours a drink. While HT's pouring the drink, you hear Nicholas pull up in his car blaring the ending strains of Finally Free. Listen real close! So the HT flips on the record player and waits. Soon you hear Nicholas open the door and walk into his home, where the Hypnotherapist surprises him. "Open your eyes, Nicholas." "Ah!" *scuffle* Want proof of my theory? Mike and the gang are fucking geniuses! From the moment Nicholas shuts the car off and walks up to open the door and enter his home, it takes exactly 21 seconds. From the time you hear Nicholas' car shut off while HT's pouring himself a drink to when you begin to hear Nicholas' footsteps coming up the hall is, yup, 21 seconds! Fucking incredible! So, my take is that The Hypnotherapist is not a reincarnation of Edward, but >is< Edward himself. After Nicholas left, he snuck into Nick's home and waited for him. I mean if it were the other way around, how in the hell would Edward get ahold of Nicholas' house keys? Hmmm? The scene you are hearing about on the TV is in reference to JFK's death. Along those lines, Ed wouldn't have to be >that< old. Maybe 65 or so. Nick would be 35. Now why Edward became a hypnotherapist and how he found Nick is up for wild guess. Coincidence maybe. Maybe Edward believed in reincarnation at the time he muderered his brother and Victoria and started actively looking for the person who Victoria was reincarnated as. Who knows? At least the mystery of the scuffle at the end is solved. :) -- KorgX3 feels like King Shit all of the sudden. :) ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 5155 **************************
