I've listened to the album a dozen times now and I quite like it. There is a definite mood to the album and they maintain it throughout. Kinda like Awake, which has a definite mood, and Queensryche's Mindcrime and Promised Land. Though I wasn't a big fan of PL, the mood setting is killer. So, mood aside, and technical prowess aside, I'm not really keen on TDOE. Sure, there;s no doubt that technically, they are great on it. But it really lacks a certain melody that Ytsejam and Erotomania have. That recurring melody. Like Paradigm Shift on LTE... or Biaxident on LTE2. I find I just can't get into TDOE because nothing ever stays the same for more than about 2 bars. Not a bad song, just not a particular instrumental I like from them. :) Just my $0.02. One of the precise reasons why prog-rock is lampooned by the general public is because it takes itself so seriously. Yes, this is serious music...but it's still JUST MUSIC. Jordan's part fits perfectly and it adds a level of humor to the band that they previously lacked. Also, as has been pointed out, the part fits in with the music of the 1920's. Where bands before them, like Queensryche, had tinkered with combining metal with progressive elements, Dream Theater took this idea to a new level, cohesively melding the two genres into one with amazing displays of musicianship and musical complexity. It still continues to inspire many many imitations, to this day. I think what impressed most people about that album was the immense promise it showed, that these 5 musicians had the potential to rise and do great things. That promise, however, has never really been lived up to (though Awake was a great album, and FII good in its own right, but for far different reasons)... until now. Scenes from a Memory is the reawakening (in terms of both music and inspiration) of a band that has, to me, been sleeping since the departure of Kevin Moore (and I deem his real departure from the band around the time of THE RECORDING of Awake, though I love some of the stuff he adds to that album, just the same). The music was there in parts, but something was missing. With the recent addition of Jordan Rudess (who finally fills in the hole left by Kevin), and the numerous side projects of the members (which gave them an apparently much needed break from Dream Theater) have rekindled the band's fire. How appropriate then that they return to form with the long awaited sequel to one of the band's most famous and popular (in terms of crowd favorites, not in terms of record sales or anything like that) songs. Metropolis II: Scenes from a Memory is the 7-years-late (and I don't mean that in a nasty way ;) ) follow up to Images & Words. It takes the musical ideas laid forth from that album and carries them to new and unexplored heights beyond what ANY OF US would have imagined. It also takes what they've learned from the experimentation of the last 7 years, in terms of melodies and song hooks, and uses this to reinforce the progressive nature of the album. If many thought Images & Words lacking in emotion, they will not be hard pressed to find it here. Many of the songs have some of the most evocative melodies I've ever heard, WITHOUT conforming to standard song formats! In other words it is both progressive and musical, complex and powerful. It also features one of the most coherent stories I've ever seen from a concept album. They toned down the lyrics to simply display the story and the themes, which is very cool. This is the culmination of Dream Theater's career to this point, and I for one have no clue where they're going to go from here, though it'll be fun to find out!! With all that said, let's take a look at the songs! Regression: Very cool beginning for the album. I like the way it gives you that relaxing feeling off spinning off into day-dreaming. It caught me by surprise at the party, but once I listened to the cd as a whole, I liked it. For those looking for recurring themes it shares the same melody as The Spirit Carries on. Overture 1928: AWESOME! Great songwriting. Strange Deja Vu: I already commented that the melody literally gave me convulsions when I was trying to get to sleep.. lol. The middle jamming section, is a bit awkward. I prefer the more mystical parts. The lyrics are among the best of the album, evocative and mysterious. One of the things about this story that I love is how it can inspire imagery. I'm a film buff and have tinkered with writing a few scripts or stories (never got much done though) and they've often incorporated stuff like this.. visions of a young girl. It's exactly the kind of thing I've been fascinated with, and DT taps into it. :) Through My Words: Provides a nice transition Fatal Tragedy: One of the coolest songs DT has ever written. The riffing that comes after the short break (As the night went on) is just awesome. The solo rocks, though I have to admit that break with just Jon riffing before the solo is a bit awkward and it gets kinda annoying the way they use it throughout the solo section, I've gotten used to it over time. The last part of the solo is simply..... my god, I've never heard anything like it. It takes a lot of listens to uncover it all (I remember the first time I discovered Myung's run towards the end) I like the sounds that Jordan uses on this number. Beyond This Life: This is the only song I can't get into at the moment. It furthers the story yes but musically it just seems out of place. The instrumental section features nice musicanship but sounds a little too much like LTE for my taste. Of course no DT album would be complete without a few moments of cheese, and here we get it from James and his "OH YEAH YAH!!!" I still laugh everytime I hear it. Overall, the song is slowly growing on me, but I still find it one of the weaker efforts on the album (though it does have some really cool parts to it, like everything on the album). The dischord in the solo is interesting... Through Her Eyes: Yes the woman at the beginning is kind of cheesy, but even cheesier is JP's little mini-solos in the back behind her. The beginning sounds exactly like these new Bud Light commercials that are making fun of exactly this type of thing ("Mr. overworked grocery man!" or something like that). But once the beginning is over, it's pretty nice. Good emotion, and overall pretty low key, which works fine. Home: Whoo! This song just rules. The wah wah pedal gets on my nerves, but in the long version it's kept to a minimum compared to what's in the rest of the song. Great atmospheric vocals from James, great melodies to complement him. It stays in your head for days without losing ANY integrity. The riff that JP does during the "coming home-it's what I long for" moments is imo the coolest he's ever written, and I'm glad that he uses it farely minimally (it doesn't spoil it with repetition). The Dance of Eternity: Finally getting used to this one, it's way out there. I laughed when I heard Jordan reprise Kevin's little ultra weird keyboard riff (I really shouldn't call it that, but can't think of anything else).. I didn't think it could get any weirder than what Kevin did, but Jordan proves me wrong. Yes, parts of this are silly, but I still like it, it just works for me for some reason. THis is probably the most insane thing DT has ever written. One Last Time: I've heard complaints about this one... I like it alot. Very atmospheric and when they recycle the verses from it in Finally Free it adds great emotional depth to both songs. The Spirit Carries On: WOW! This is a POWERFUL song! Where the choirs in Through Her Eyes were pretty cheesy, here they're very effective. This manages to do away with a lot of the cheese factor that many people accuse DT ballads of having. I wish Jon and Jordan didn't shred so much during the solos, but it's not TOO distracting. Finally Free: Awesome. Carries the album to great emotional heights. Play it at a loud volume, if not just to get the full effectiveness of "Open your eyes Victoria!!" I need say nothing about Mike's drumming at the end, as most have already commented on it. The restraint and taste the band shows on this track shows the growth they have made over the years. So that's it. As for the individual efforts, John shreds a lot but is also tasteful when he needs to be. He remains what I have always felt about him: I have never heard another guitarist exert so much control over their instrument. Everything seems to happen effortlessly. Mike: On the first few listens I felt like Mike had really restrained a lot of his rhythmic style and relied more on double bass, which, as a drummer, dissappointed me. However I am discovering new things that he's doing all the time. I really think that's one of the best things about this album. Yes, the music is INCREDIBLY complex but it's also very subtle, and it doesn't get in the way of the lyrics or the story. You could listen to the entire album, multiple times, and not pick up on a lot of it. John M: great as always, I find him being maybe just a little more adventurous than he has been on previous efforts. Jordan: what can I say, though I could do without some of the weirder sounds he uses. he BELONGS in the band. He doesn't do a lot here that surprises me (though I admit he did catch me off guard a couple times), and I'd say that's the only thing he needs to work on, more diversity, not just in samples, but in playing as well. James: I think he incorporates here the same thing I can say about the rest of the band. There's a saying in my acting class: "It takes 20 years to be an actor" ie it takes a long time before you can do great things and make them seem easy, and effortless. James does exactly that here. He may be down in the octaves, but his singing is more natural, controlled, effortless, emotional, and clean than it has been on any of their albums. He's developed a great atmospheric quality that he displayed a few times before, but had mostly gone unused. He doesn't necessarily make my jaw drop with his vocals anymore, but he doesn't really have to. Overall, noone particularly stands out. The ensemble sound of I&W is back with a vengenance. Sorry this review is so long, but there's simply a LOT to talk about. I thought it was a moment of pure genius myself... Now, I'll preface these comments with a statment that I haven't REALLY listened to the album yet - just a one-time runthrough last night because we HAD to at least HEAR it.
