Message-ID: I am stumped with the last two minutes of the cd myself. It leaves me wanting even more (Us DT fans are never satisfied :) Seriously, what it sounds to me is probably the more obvious answer, In the beginning of the cd, the hypnotherapist says to open your eyes if you feel you have to come back into reality.....maybe it was just time to wake up and he was startled? I don't know....that seems like the obvious answer to me.....but I know that there must be more to it then that! What exactly happens at the end??? Is it a reincarnation of the The Miracle coming to get Nicholas??? One more thing....is Nicholas a reincarnation of the Sleeper or is he a reincarnaiton of Victoria???? When a band can provoke this many questions and thoughts through their music, you know they have done something truly amazing IF ANY OF THE BAND MEMBERS READ THIS.......THANK YOU! I went to the record shop that's about 500 yards away from where I live(somewhere in Germany) and asked if there'd be enough copies on Monday. He said that he had ordered enough, but is´of course dependent on the mail man. It could even be there on friday.... So, of course i went and, yes, it was there in all it's beauty. And to Mike, Mark and who else was responsible for the veil(including all the facts that dropped through the net during the last weeks), it was sure worth the waiting and not knowing. I am 25 years old, mature on music and again cautioned myself about the reception of this album. Just because DT is your favorite band and you have a shelf of their records alone, don't loose your neutral judgement. Well, I can't help it, it still kicks my arse majorly. My studies involve literature and poetry and just looking atthe music(didn't look at the lyrics really close, yet) I find this a poetic masterpiece, which has never been done like that before. I bow my had and say thank you. Sebastian PS: I know that the bitching about what people don't like or DT could have made better will start soon(and I am not saying that one should love everything that is served for dinner unconditionally), but ask yourself how lucky you bastards are that these motherfuckers answered all your requests like this.... enough praise ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Oct 1999 15:55:29 -0700 (PDT) From: Dan Wait To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: vocals, the 80's, and stuff Message-ID: I myself am 19, stuck in a world of hip-hop and bad rock. To the 17-year old (sorry, I forgot your name!): Do you really care if the 80's are 'uncool?' So what if James' voice sounds like it came from the 80's? He's SINGING, which is more than you can say for Metallica, Korn, Limp Noodle (he he), and every other popular rock group out there. So get over your petty dislike for the 80's and decide whether you like something based on what you like, not what your (and my) culture likes. SFAM: a great concept album. Best story line I've heard in a long time (although Man-O-War's depiction of the Iliad in "Achilles, Agony and Ecstacy" was pretty rad). The music... I was hoping for some progressive shredding, the likes of Acid Rain. But the complexity is great! I'm gonna miss Derek's heavy keyboards (though I am not denying Jordan's superior playing). And I'm gonna miss LTE. But right now I'm too busy listening... I hope everyone in my dorm likes it! -Dan ===== Calvin: Wheneber I take a bath, I always put my ducky in first. I must say this is undoubtedly an adventerous CD. I had to go to 4 different stores to get it. I started off at Tower records, not happening there. Moved on to best buy, huge gap in the DT section. Sam Goody, should be called Shelves Empty. Finally at The Wall in Moorestwon mall (you jersey folk know this place real well) I found it. I threw it on the counter and the cashier greeted me with "God Bless You" . Adam you were right, if you are on this list this disc is unreal. My cheap play by play commentary is as follows: ACT 1 Regression: cool way to open a disc, i like the hypnotist thingy. opening with james is interesting, it sets a vocal tone for the whole thing. overture 1928: this is the band at its best, collected, tight, and in a sense new again. strange deja vu: cool rythm in the verses, very interesting lyrics(this is to be said thru out) through my words: again more coolness fatal tragedy: no comment at this time beyond this life:lyriclly, this has to be the bluntest, and darkest this band has ever been. home: very cool rythem, love the wah pedal. the met 1 references are well placed. the eastern thingy in the middle sounds like something out of a foreign culture film, and the instrumental section is quite tight. The dance of eternity: OK, anyone else think that this is the pinnacle of the disc? That wild wild west part sounds like something that would come out of an old player piano thingy with all the different instruments in it. I LOVE THIS PART. one last time, spirit carries on, finally free: well put together, but at points theses sections seem to drag. the story line is great thru here. FII stylings can be heard i think in parts. there are a few part that sound VERY close to Hells Kitchen. over all, this is their best work, straight on down to the artwork, the liner notes are set up very cool. over and out. stan ------------------------------ Date: 26 Oct 99 20:13:00 EDT From: Matthew Turk To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Analysis... **SPOILERS** Message-ID: This is something I posted to www.mikeportnoy.com earlier, but I'm repost= ing here... Ok. A couple things struck me as odd with this speculation... First off, = is it assumed that the old man is Senator Edward? Anyone old enough to have rec= eived Senator status (Sen. Thurmond excepted) in 1928 has to be dead now, assum= ing the story took place during the current time period. Was it indicated to = be during the current time period by the Washington News Broadcast? Was that= a reference, possibly a verbatim newsbroadcast, to JFK Jr? What was the importance of the Senator, anyhow? I think we can establish = a couple things about the storyline. 1. Victoria was originally in love with Julian, the Sleeper. (Sleeping lo= ve?) 2. Upon his confrontation with his 'demons,' (either drug abuse, which I = don't particularly like the idea of, or some other unspecified 'habit') she bec= omes infatuated with, and runs to, Senator Edward, the Miracle. (Miraculous redemption?) 3. When Julian has finished confronting his demons, he returns and Victor= ia realizes he has always held her heart. She leaves Edward. 4. Edward discovers, somehow, their secret rendezvous (although this is t= he only indication that the Miracle and the Sleeper may be telepathic, to my= knowledge... any others?) 5. Edward kills them both (Open your eyes, Victoria) I *think*, and makes= it look like a murder/suicide, Julian unable to cope with the idea of loving= his brother's wife. 6. Edward is The Witness. For some reason it's not commented on that he i= s the suicider's brother in the article. The last "past" section of Finally Free is confusing. "As their bodies lie still / and the ending draws near" -- Isn't it alrea= dy over, as far as the past is concerned? Aren't they both dead already? Two= shots have been fired, assuming The Miracle *was* the murderer, and *did*= ultimately commit the crime. "All their fears disappear, it all becomes clear / A blinding light comes= into view." The hypnotherapist refers to a bright light several times; is this= merely reoccuring imagery of death, attempting to draw Nicholas further b= ack, to the time of Victoria's death? "An old soul exchanged for a new / a familiar voice comes shining through= =2E" This part is unclear. Is it a way of saying Victoria is reincarnated as Nicholas? If so, why is it an exchange of souls? An old for a new? No, t= hat doesn't fit. Is the familiar voice Nicholas? If it is a new soul that is Nicholas', the voice couldn't be considered familiar. Something happens in this last 'past' line that is unclear, as far as I c= an tell. It seems to indicate either than there is another mechanism at work= , another piece in play, or that the soul exchange is analagous to reincarnation. The familiar voice that reappears in the actual song is cl= early Nicholas', but it shouldn't be familiar in the past, should it? Well, anyway, there's my analysis after two listens. I don't understand t= he ending yet. I don't think purely listening will help either; I'm going to= need to do some more thinking about this. The old man, I suspect, is not The Miracle. I think he might be either a = red herring or another character not yet understood. And now that the moment struck, I've got a couple other thoughts. Someone suggested that it might be a timeline of three lives; I don't neccessairly believe that, but it might work. That would help to explain= the two 'open your eyes, Nicholas' at the end. The first one is followed not= only by the sounds of a car driving, but *past memories.* That seems a bit od= d -- and then, at the end, they repeat Open Your Eyes, Nicholas, at which poin= t he either wakes up or realizes something. Clearly someone is *with* him, be= cause we hear the sound of footsteps. What if Nicholas isn't Victoria? I recognize that he sees her in the mir= ror, however, he also cries for her. Why would she tell him not to cry for he= r? = Might he be Julian? Anyway, more things to ponder. Most curious, however, is the question of the ending. What does the stat= ic *mean*? :) mjt ____________________________________________________________________ Get free email and a permanent address at http://www.netaddress.com/?N=3D= 1 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Oct 1999 20:22:27 -0400 (EDT) From: Ryan Veety To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: My ideas of the story Message-ID: Since Dream Theater seems to have a Christian belief, and in The Spirit Carries On it is quite evident that they believe in a spirit passing into heaven after death, I don't think Nicholas is a reincarnation of any past charachter. In a nutshell..... They are lovers, then they break up. She gets together with Edward/The Miracle (not sure if they get married, or are just lovers too....). She eventually leaves The Miracle for Julian/The Sleeper. Like you said, Edward kills them both, and plants the suicide note. ALSO (and this is important), Edward was the witness to the crime, and makes up the story about how he tried to stop Julian from committing suicide. Here's my take on the ending....(we differ here) Nicholas is woken at the BEGINNING of "Finally Free" (when the hypnotherapist tells him "open your eyes Nicholas" for the first time). You can hear Nicholas get in his car, and drive home. At the END of "Finally Free" he gets home, watches the TV for a moment (and hears the news snippet about JFK Jr.). He shuts off the TV, makes himself a drink, pops on a record - and sits down to relax and listen to the music...... then you hear the door open (just barely hear it), and several footsteps... then SOMEBODY (the hypnotherapist?) tells him AGAIN "Open your eyes Nicholas" (just like the Miracle told Victoria "open your eyes Victoria" before he killed her), and he kills (or at least attempts to kill) Nicholas (the record player is disturbed in the struggle). IMO, the murderer of Nicholas at the end is probably the hypnotherapist, who is possibly the reincarnation of the Miracle. IMO, the ending is a little homage to The Blair Witch Project (actually, I think this is fairly obvious, it's SO similar), especially since Portnoy had posted about how awesome that movie was (remember?). Care to comment on that Mr. Portnoy? :) Also, I'm glad it's all a little ambiguous, and not TOO CLEAR. It would be kinda boring if they spelled it all out for us, and answered ALL the questions. By including that ending (which annoyed me after the first listen because I was like "WHAT THE FUCK!?"... but now i think it's brilliant), it left some mystery for us to discuss! Here's a few things that confused me on the first couple of listens..... Everybody please open your liners to the "Finally Free" lyrics. 1. OK, under VICTORIA's dialogue "Their love renewed, they'd rendedezvous...." OK, this confused the shit out of me, because why would Victoria be saying "THEIR love..." and not "OUR love...." 2. AND.... under The Sleeper's dialogue "As their bodies lay still...." This confused me even more, since the Sleeper was dead. Why the hell would he say "....THEIR bodies....". This totally fucked me up, and led me to the conclusion that the Sleeper was the one who survived the struggle, and aparently killed the Miracle in self-defense. HOWEVER, that doesn't fit with the rest of the story, and I'm convinced that this paragraph is just narration, and not really the Sleeper's dialogue. The same goes for Victoria's paragraph--- it's really just narration. OK, one more thing..... Does anybody have ANY clue why Julian and the senator are called The Miracle, and The Sleeper? I mean, aside from the obvious - just to connect it to Metro pt. 1. The boys have to come up with SOME reason for the nicknames, otherwise it seems a tad silly (I'd settle for any explanation, even if it's a bit of a stretch). Did I miss something? Anybody? Mr. Portnoy? WHEW....
