I think it speaks a lot to why he is not in DT anymore. Here are some quotes that stood out to me: Q: Is it hard to come up with song titles for instrumental songs? A: 'You know what? That was the very last thing that we came up with. And they are so unimportant. With the whole "Atlantis" trilogy I am kind of making a mockery of progressive rock because I think a lot of progressive bands try to be so profound and try to take themselves so seriously. I am kind of just taking a poke at them.' Q: You did it yourself with Dream Theater though. A: (laughs) 'As I said, I was mocking prog'. Q: Like you said, you were fired from Dream Theater. Do you or they still keep in touch? A: 'No. I mean, I never really communicated with them when I was in the band. Let alone outside of the band. It has always been just business with those guys.' So basically, beside the fact that his "free lifestyle" clashed with the more family-married nature of DT, it looks like he sees music as more of a party atmosphere. Surely the lyrics and attitude of Petrucci and Myung must have clashed against his philosophy of music. I've contended since day 1 Derek joined the band that he either subconsciously or deliberately would try to sabotage the band's direction. (If you don't believe me, just compare FII with SFAM when it comes out.) Furthermore, who would want someone in the band that was "just business." For them to call him on the phone is even more verification that they never had any kind of real relationship with the guy. It is amazing to me that they even came up with good music considering the work conditions. I think Jordan works much better because it seems like they are all friends having a blast (like in the old KevMo days) instead of the business it had become under Derek. I applaud DT for ousting him. Not because he isn't a good keyboard player; I doubt many would argue that point. But he does not have the passion or desire or commitment to the art of what DT is about to realistically pull off SFAM. Once SFAM comes out, I'm sure Derek will become a far distance memory. I'm even beginning to forget his last name as we speak. In fact, I've never been this excited about an album like this one. I had but all given up hope that DT would ever come close to I&W glory again (or even Awake for that matter). But this will easily become my most favorite DT album. I can't believe that I'm actually saying there will be a better album than I&W. But it is here...or will be here by OCT. 26! To me (without going into spoilers), this album takes all the best of every album and combines it into one...I&W intricate playing-especially between guitar and keyboard-great odd time sigs . . . Awake heaviness at times-the power of the songs that hit you . . . ACOS well lets just say it looks like small potatoes now ... FII more hook oriented songs. Imagine taking all of that and swirling it together, plus 150% better use of background vocals than they have ever done in the past, ...SFAM. Shall be a fun year indeed! The MadTabber By the way, I'm sure with this album there will be a new influx of new subscribers. I know it is hard, but lets all try to be patient and courteous to them...even when they ask stupid questions...or questions we have heard a million times. The band has done such a great job this time, I think we really owe it to them to make this Jam a very friendly place to new people. So, if you must point out "read the FAQ," try to be nice about it. And mentioning the power of the Jam, we need to do everything in our effort to help DT push this album past I&W's success! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Oct 1999 10:10:04 -0500 From: "Al @ Switchcraft" To: retaehT maerD Subject: Don't fuck with me, boyee! (I saved it) "Tape heads typically are a metal alloy with a helical wound pickup coil that reacts to magnetic media by reading the particles previously arranged by the record head and converting the magnetic information to electrical impulses. The record head is fed electrical impulses and converts that to magnetic impulses that rearrange the magnetic particles on the tape. The erase head is simply a mini ELECTROMAGNET. This is a VERY elementary description, but adequate for our purposes. I assure you, the tape heads themselves are NOT magnets." END QUOTE The record head, when active, is also an electromagnet. Obviously recording on a tape changes it properties. The PLAYBACK head is not a magnet at ANY time. It's an electromagnetic transducer. Read only. (unless magnetized from lack of maintenance) YOUR original argument specifically addressed PLAYBACK. On cheaper machines that share a common record/playback head, the single head can operate in both modes, but will only PRODUCE a magnetic flux when in the record mode. >record heads). What you are referring to is physical wear of the tape as particles on the surface get damaged or are removed/shifted. Most of this can be blamed on abrasive components in the tape path (guides, capstan, mechanical end of tape detectors and cheap heads) or excessive pinch roller pressure. Cheaper machines suffer greatly from these problems because of poor material choices on the part of the manufacturer. The better the machine, the lower the tape degradation as it's played. ALL machines cause tape wear, The degree of wear greatly varies from machine to machine. A quality machine that's well maintained minimizes these problems. No one uses a master tape for daily playback. The master tape is used to record a new copy when the integrity of the old one is compromised. I've got recordings I made on my old Ampex reel-to-reel over 20 years ago that still sound great. When they have out lived their usefulness, I'll make a new copy from the original vinyl source. Assuming the original was from vinyl I still posses. As I've stated in the past, I don't like cassettes. The tape is to narrow and the tape speed much to slow. However, in their highest form they are still superior to common MP3s at this time. > What I agree with is that tape is a more accurate representation of >reality, in a sense. And I think Al would agree. They are getting closer. But digital still lacks some of the warmth that analog is famous for. As far as the tape head thing is concerned, I'm not an expert in the field, but I'd like to think I have a fairly good grasp on the basics. For more information on this topic, I'd seek the advice from someone that has an engineering degree and is using that degree conducting research and developing products for the recording industry. Just an interesting note, I guess. That's just dandy if applied amplitude. And you are obviously confusing sound amplitude with the amplitude of an electrical signal. There is a big difference between acoustical SOUND and electrical impulses. If your CD player has an output of 2.5 volts from 10 Hz to 20 KHz and a signal-to-noise ratio of 105 dB then why can't you hear it without the support of amplifiers and speakers? Hint: There is no sound until a speaker converts electrical impulses to mechanical movements that are propagated as acoustical sound. However, the topic was bandwidth and resolution. You CAN have a signal of 70 dB (amplitude) with a bandwidth of 96 dB. on another note... Let's examine a TV picture. The average bandwidth of a color TV signal (picture and sound) is 6 megahertz! If translated to decibels the figure is quite high. (I don't have time to do the math, nor is it really that important) Does this BEGIN to tell us how loud the volume is at the listeners ear? How LOUD is the picture? The bandwidth doesn't tell us what frequency the picture is at, just how much spectrum space is occupied as the signal is propagated. Both you guys are talking apples and oranges at a banana convention. I got all of this from a friend who read it on the net I believe. Max was in an elevator with his drummer, who had always been loyal to him. What Max didn't know is that he had been jamming with former Machine Head, Soulfly guitarist Logan Mader in his new band. Logan was asked to leave Soulfly about a year ago for "trying to control the band" I believe. Anyway, Roy told Max "I can't do this anymore" then Max got pissed at him cursing "Why the Fuck does everybody do this to me" then he began choking him in the elevator. he then went to the truck, and pitched all his drums off, damaging every one of them. I personally believe this to be very true, Max seems to be losing it. If you go to Soulfly.com you should be able to read another story about what dickheads Max AND gloria, his wife and manager is. If I decide to search around someone's website for certain filenames and find them, even though they're not linked to anything, that's still okay, since it's THERE. Anything that you put in a publicly available web directory is 100% fair game, because it's technically public information at that point. ------------------------------------------------- Andrew Coutermarsh email_address_removed http://cout.dhs.org/ Cloak on IRC ICQ: 2513441 ------------------------------------------------- "Prayer has no place in school, just like facts have no place in religion." - Superintendant Chalmers from "The Simpsons" ------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Oct 1999 16:37:34 -0700 From: NuGgeTMaN To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Re: Johns AWAKE era acoustic?
