This explains about everything that I think about DT... I think that DT is probably the heaviest band that I listen to, and also my favorite band... I personally can't listen to songs such as Lie... too heavy for me... For me, its the Metropolis's, the Learning To Live, the Scarred, Trial Of Tears, Lines In The Sand, etc that bring me to DT... as well as songs such as they did last winter, the "unplugged" tracks, LSOaD, Eve, etc that show where DT truely shines through... To me, releasing a track like Home shows where DT can be absolutly amazing... Message-ID: Here is another one for you Al (i CC'ed you a copy) Do you guys listen to people who call in for requests? I and several of my friends have called in numerous times and requested "Home" by Dream Theater. These 5 musicians display more musical talent in one song than the rest of the "MTV" stuff you play in an hour. You have, in the past, played them by requests for earlier albums, including "Falling Into Infinity", and "Awake". Where are people, who are tired of the same ole' mainstream, no musicianship, talentless, regurgitation-of-last-years-hit-songs, supposed to turn to listen to real talent, crafty, imaginative and emotional lyrics, dynamically written music (that IS actually HARD to play, and even HARDER to compose), and bands that actually CARE about their listeners and NOT about how many albums they sale or if their video makes it to MTV. They turn to the RADIO. Where are the good ole' days when bands like Floyd, Rush, Yes, Genesis, and The Doors where played on the radio because they WERE GREAT MUSICIANS and NOT because they made a video or this band looks good in tight jeans, even though they can't sing, play or write worth a shit. I wish 93x would consider WHAT they are playing and WHY they are playing certain songs. I don't discriminate any musical style or band based on any reason, except for lack of talent (trying to substitute video exposure or songs that contain no words except a chorus, and the same rhythm over and over and over, ad nasium.....). It is my understanding that someone high up in your station DECIDED that since HE didn't like the song, then NO ONE else is going to like it. Don't you make your money from advertisers?? And don't they base their decision of which radio stations to post their ads on the amount of listeners they have consistently?? You gain listeners by playing what THEY want to hear NOT what you want to play for them (since it was decided by the executives, who probably don't even LISTEN to the station they work for). I'm sorry if this sounds like I'm trashing you, but well I'm not. I have some strong emotional feelings for QUALITY music, and for musicians that care for MUSIC in general (all types) and not on making the al-mighty dollar. If you played, for instance, Dream Theaters "Home" (off of "Scenes From A Memory", due out Oct. 26) and you had a lot of listeners write in and call saying they didn't want to hear that type of music or that song, then I wouldn't blink an eye if you pulled it(them) from the playing rotation. I would respect that. But not playing a song because a few people don't like it doesn't constitute neglecting the rest of you listening audience. All I ask is that you listen to the requests and play the music people want to hear. And I and all my friends wish to hear "Home". Bruce Dickinson included. > Every molecule of iron oxide that moves is a bit. Until you've got, you > know, three hundred thousand bit sampling. Very true. Now, if we had 1) a recording method to use all those bits on a tape, and 2) an analog recording method with infinite resolution, rather than 80-90 dB or so, we'd be doing great. But we aren't using them all, and a good number of them are recording noise instead of music. Enough, in fact, that 16 bit digital has *more* resolution than analog. > AS: They have all kinds of modules you can hook up to your digital stuff > to make it sound like analog, but... ..by degrading the sound in some way. (You can't add information that isn't on the recording. Fundamental Truth (tm). Anything that changes the sound degrades it, except by blind luck.) > BD: It will never sound like analog because it doesn't have the > information. Dr. Nyquist would take issue with that. :) A CD has 96 dB of resolution from DC to 22.05 KHz. No more, no less. Analog tape can't even come close. Vinyl can come close, but you've gotta spend $xx,xxx on your playback equipment to touch what you can do with $x,xxx of digital stuff. Very good vinyl can approach 80-85dB of resolution (in the midrange anyway), and you've gotta be quite the Golden Ear to tell the diff between 85dB and 96dB of resolution. Now, if he said that 'recording companies don't use the info they have', that's very true. Most recordings nowadays are compressed into a few dB to make them LOUD. That's just a very unfortunate modern sentiment about what Music Should Be (tm), and would likely be true whether we recorded things digitally or not. (There's been an arguement on the audio newsgroups lately about 'Crest Factor', which is a measure of this; the ratio of the average sound level to the highest peak. I think someone found a hip-hop/r&b/whatever type recording with about a 6dB factor. That's hearsay, though. Don't quote me. :-) > If you record it digitally, you will never have it; you're f**ked. In > other words, when they bring in sixty-four bit CD's or DVD's, the > Beatles records are going to sound unbelievable. Unbelivable is a good word. 64 bits would be 384 dB of dynamic range. I don't think anything on earth hits 200 (Jet takeoffs are around 130). And dB are a logarithmic scale, like the Richter (sp?) scale for earthquakes; adding 10 dB means 10 TIMES as much electrical power, (+20 = 100x, +30 = 1000x... think what "250 dB louder than a jet engine" implies.) > People are going to go, "Wow, what did they do to the Beatles records?" > Nothing. They always sounded like that, it's just that they sounded so > lame on CD. And the fact is that vinyl, really good vinyl on an amazing > system, kicks the shit out of the best CD on the planet. Whatever poor > fools have recorded and mastered their albums thinking, "Hey, I recorded > it on Sony 24 bit..." Hey, that's as good as it is ever going to sound, > only 24 bit. 24 bit is 144 dB of dynamic range. Thermal noise in quality circuit components is around -140dB from the actual signal. So, you're not quite wasting a bit with 24 bit, if you've got a holy terror megabuck high-end system. For the same reason, vinyl can _never_ sound better than 24 bit digital, until we go to all-optical playback mechanisms. No 'lectronics allowed, except the ones to generate the laser (!) to read your vinyl record. :) And, your listening room (unless you listen to your stereo in some ultra-high-science isolation chamber) should have a noise floor, at the absolute minimum, of 20dB. +144 = 164 dB. I don't wanna be in that room when you crank it up. Or even in that house. And, 0dB was chosen as 'the quietest sound an average person can hear'. Even in that isolation chamber, +144dB above the threshold of hearing will damage your hearing inside of a few seconds of listening. (see OSHA charts on max allowable noise levels, if you care, at http://headwize.com/articles/hearing_art.htm Then think, 20dB noise floor, +96dB from today's CDs, -6dB for that worst-case crest factor, and figure out... 30 minutes to hearing damage with that recording. And we need more? No, we just need mastering engineers with more clue than Mr. Dickinson is showing here.) > So that's the end of my tirade against digital recording. What was the > question? The question is, Bruce, can you leave the engineering to the engineers? Or at least don't make a fool of yourself publically like this. :-) Further reading on the subject, drawn up by one of those hi-end audio magazines, can be seen at http://www.theabsolutesound.com/dvdhope.htm They're better at explaining it than me. Am I on > crack? > I think all albums are written instrumental, then the lyrics/vocal melodies are added, in any case i think it was I&W that the guys even performed most of the songs instrumentally while they were sans singer.. > > ===== > Hobbes: Do you have an idea for your story yet? > Calvin: No, I'm waiting for inspiration. You can't just turn on creativity like a faucet. You have to be in the right mood. > Hobbes: What mood is that? > Calvin: Last-minute panic. > _________________________________ GOD i absolutely LOVE calvin and hobbes... -- Without love, without truth, there can be no turning back. The new album is due out on Tuesday, Oct.26th, and the first single off the album, HOME, is out already on Hard Radio. I was wondering if you were planning on playing the song too. If not, then I'd like to request it. I definitely believe it belongs in heavy rotation. I was eternally grateful to a friend who made me listen to them, a decade ago, and I'd like to share them with the rest of your audience. Give them a shot, I'm sure you'll like them. Thanks!
