Message-ID: Hello Kurt, I assume you want some nice distortion? If this is the case then I'd go for a decent amp with an overdrive facility-better still a valve amp. However this can be quite expensive (=A3500 upwards). But over the years I've spent money getting these fancy solid state amps that supposedly mimic valves- Tube Emulators, Transtubes, Valvestates etc but when I got an all valve amp (Peavey 5150 head and 4x12 cab) I realised what I'd been missing. It's not just the mellower tone that valves produce, but it's the long sustain, without harshness and unwanted feedback that they impart to your tone.=20 I could have saved a lot of cash by saving up and going straight for a valve amp, but the initial outlay can be difficult. May I suggest selling a family member into slavery, to raise the cash (siblings are always popular :-D) Good Luck=20 Anil Anil Sahal Motoneurone Research Group Neuroscience and Biomedical Systems West Medical Building University of Glasgow Glasgow G12 8QQ 0141 339 8855 ext.4552 ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Oct 1999 07:26:34 -0700 From: David Dixon To: "'ytsejam@torchsong.com'" Subject: RE: Could someone reccommend a good effects pedal? Kurt, here's my thoughts on the matter - I went through this whole thing 6 years ago when I first started playing. Although tube amps are much better than solid state amps, initially it isn't worth the extra cash to buy one, because the beginning guitarist doesn't really care about kick-ass tone (well, at least not to the degree he will later). Man, even I used to think this little Crate 1x10 solid-state combo was the holy-fucking-grail of tone...:) Yes, those days are LONG gone (I now use a Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier). I started out with a BOSS Metal Zone pedal (the best pedal on Earth as far as metal-type distortion goes) - but by all means, don't feed it through a tube amp (you have to go solid-state or the pedal sounds like shit)... :) Personally, I'd recommend (as a good starting point) the Fender Princeton Stereo Chorus amp. Yes, it's solid state, but it's about the best inexpensive solid state amp money can buy. I'm looking at getting one for a practice amp (the Dual Recto gets a bit loud for my neighbors, I'm afraid). The Fender amp has a very good clean tone (with analog chorus), as well as singing distortion, all built-in and foot-switchable. It sounds great, especially if you can get a good price for it. Look around at used music stores and find one! ALS,S&R,FG,FAL.....all those albums were not as good as P&W, but there were very good moments and songs in them. Message-ID: Yes, I did it. I downloaded the new album. I found it on IRC purely by chance, and couldn't help myself from getting it. Some of you might bitch and moan about that, but honestly I don't care. Some of you are a little too anal at times (no, I'm not referring to the rectum). So, I ask...what's so bad about doing this? Nothing. First of all, it's not like DT is going to be out a few more bucks, 'cause I fully intend on actually purchasing the album. I mean, it's not like I don't support the guys. I have the ytsejam *tattooed* on my back for cryin' out loud. Plus, the tracks aren't in perfect working order. The were obviously ripped by some guy who didn't know how. So, I'm going to have to buy the new album to get the full effect. As most true fans of DT are, I'm a fanatic. When I heard that the new album was going to be released on October 26th (I'm in Texas), I was more pissed than elated. "Aww, damn, " I said to myself, "now I have to wait forever again." I'd already gone through this with FII, and it sucked even then. Well, imagine my wonder finding out that I could actually listen to the album in just few minutes...of *course* I'm going to grab at the chance. For those of you who are going to flame me (and maybe even ban me), I hope you can see my side. I've downloaded it, and I'm listening to it as we speak. But, I'm not going to give a single spoiler (I've even had to rewrite parts of this so it won't hint at the new album), and I'm not going to send it to anyone. If someone wants it that badly, I suggest they wait until it's released. But if they can't wait, they can find it themselves. But, if anyone downloads the MP3's, buy the damn CD. Now, I hope the band doesn't get mad at people like me. They must understand that we are, for the most part, completely loyal and fanatical fans. I'm not sure why the decided to release the album this late. Maybe it was the logistics of it all; I don't really know. But, hell yeah I downloaded the new album. It may not be the best copy in the world, but it'll hold me over until the 26th. And when the 26th comes along, you can bet your ass I'll be listening to the new *CD*, singing along to every word. Well, for a good metal/hard rock sound, I'd say the Boss Metal Zone is one of the best pedals out there. You'd be hard pressed to get a QR/DT sound out of just a distortion pedal, though (unless you're looking for the muddier sound that QR seems to be steering towards lately). Knowing that you're from the New Orleans area, though, your best bet it to wander on down to the Musician's Friend store with your guitar and try some stuff out and pick the one that you like. Message-ID: LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT REUNION The wait is almost over. Legendary progressive rockers Liquid Tension Experiment have finally decided to reunite and release a third studio album. Three-fourths of the original lineup remain intact (John Petrucci-guitars, Mike Portnoy-drums, and Jordan Rudess-keyboards), with the only casualty being bassist Tony Levin. His replacement is veteran progressive metal bassist John Myung. The band is going to head in a bold new direction musically, and for the first time ever will feature vocals. These lead vocals will be handled by their other new bandmember, Kevin James LaBrie- who hails from the great white north. Due to the new musical direction, this upcoming release will be under the pseudonym "Dream Theater". Now that 3/4 of the original Liquid Tension Experiment lineup is involved in this new group, don't expect any more releases under the LTE moniker - the band appears committed to Dream Theater (and it may in fact become a permanent fixture, not just a temporary side-project). Expect the new album, entitled Dream Theater - "Scenes From a Memory" in stores October 26th. - Joe D. ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 5102 **************************
