I thought it would be worthwhile to post here as well. -Bogie > - Marlenus, banned from the irc.dreamt.org server as well because of > the self-righteous preachers spewing the gospel of the band. Amen > fellow dream theater brothers (yeah right). Bogie, you live right down > the road from me, you might be a tough guy behind your PC, but I'll see > you at the XMAS shows, then we'll see just how tough you really are, > running crying to Skadz to K-line me. Marlenus, This might be a long reply, but I ask that you read through it because it is a worthwhile read. (As for the rest of you out there, you should read on as well, because this email applies to both the people who want to discuss the new album and for those who don't want to discuss it.) Let me clarify a few things for you: Yes, I did kick/ban you from #ytsejam because you were annoying the hell out of over 2/3 of the channel by "singing" the lyrics to the new album publically in the channel, even though many people had asked you to stop because they would like to be completely surprised by the album. I didn't kick/ban you because of direct band orders or what not. I kick/banned you because many of the people in #ytsejam who don't have the album or no nothing about it want to be totally surprised until the album's release date. But, let's face it, there are also plenty of people who don't care to be surprised --- once the album is being distributed by the record company via promos, it's out there, right? I'm totally in the same boat as you about getting my hands on promos before the actual release date because I love hearing the music before it's official for stores to sell it. However, the difference between you and I in having the new Dream Theater album is that I'm doing my best to respect _OTHERS'_ wishes to not know about any details until October 26th, when everyone can have the opportunity to purchase the album. (The only way I'm respecting the band's wish to maintain this veil of secrecy is by not posting information about the new album to http://dreamtheater.mit.edu/ --- you don't see me sending nasty emails or banning people from #ytsejam because of band orders, and I feel bad that the people who have to help maintain this veil of secrecy, like Itchy and Skadz, get so much shit, because they are good people at heart and they do mean well. They are just trying to help the band out...they aren't doing it because they want to.) Anyways, back to what I was saying... I have no problem with you transcribing lyrics and posting them on your site, nor do I have a problem with you distributing the MP3s to people who would like to hear the material. Hell, I even helped Polo fix some of the mistakes in your lyrics. But, when people had repeatedly asked you to shut up and stop "singing" the lyrics to the new album on #ytsejam, that's when I stepped in and kick/banned you. You weren't being very respectful to others in the room. If you can't see why people are trying to dodge details about the new album, let me try to relate their feelings to you in another way, because I can understand what they are going through... One weekend this summer, I missed out on seeing The Sixth Sense with all my buddies, and when I was hanging out with them the next weekend, they started talking about the movie. I kindly asked for them to stop talking about it, or at least to not talk about things that would completely ruin the movie for me. (And if you've seen The Sixth Sense, you know you can ruin for anyone by revealing one detail.) So anyways, my buddies went on talking about the movie (which at first was cool with me), like the various apparitions that approached the little boy and what not. No big deal, right? Then, one of my friends said, "OH YEAH, BUT I COULDN'T BELIEVE THAT AT THE END, XXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXX." And, _that_ took away ALL my enthusiasm I developed inside my head about the movie's mystery. Sure, I did end up seeing the movie, but I was watching it in the mind state I would have if I had already seen the movie, not going into it with an open/unjaded mind. It sucked! I couldn't really experience the same thing they did when they saw it for the first time. Now, you might be saying to yourself, yeah, but that's a movie, this is a CD. I don't think it's any different really. This next Dream Theater album has a hook, just like The 6th Sense has a hook to it, and I don't want anyone to be the person who blows it for someone else who just happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. My main motivation towards kick/banning you lies solely in the aforementioned reasoning. I don't think you are a bad person or an asshole or anything. In fact, I'm pretty sure I've met you at a previous DT show in the Boston area and thought you were a cool guy. Now, about the K-lining, I did not go running to Skadz saying, "Hey, K- line Marlenus, K-line Marlenus". He asked me why you were on the ban list in the first place, and before I even told him, he asked, "Was he saying shit in the channel about the new album again?" I replied yes to that question and that, my friend, is how you got K-lined. I did not write to Skadz to get you K-lined; I was planning on removing the ban the following night because in the past you have been a civil person on #ytsejam. It was just that one night I thought you were being a _tad_ disrespectful. If you promise not to disrespect the fans in the room who are trying to avoid all sorts of spoiling, then I'll put in a request to Skadz to remove the K-line because things are sorted out. Or, heck, just email him yourself, and if you wanna get back on, I'm sure he'll be cool with it. As for the rest of you people discussing the new album in this newsgroup, I hope you can see why some fans are vehemently against any details being posted. Some of these fans just happen to read the wrong message because it's not appropriate labeled "SPOILER". And, if you are a fan who doesn't want to read anything about the new album, then don't read a message appropriately labeled "SPOILER"!!! So, all I ask is that if you are going to talk about some of the details, label your message APPROPRIATELY. Is that too much to ask? Sure, information is flying around about the album, and you can't try to cease all communication about the new album from happening. But, you can try to do your best to keep others from spoiling for innocent fans. At the same time, while I do applaud the efforts of Mark Bredius in trying to limit the amount of information out there, I think that he needs to concentrate his efforts on very public forums, places on the net a lot of people visit. I don't agree with him trying to eliminate forums about the new album for fans who knowingly head to those forums. All I'm saying is that if people want to open up forums to talk about the album or listen to the album and they can do it in a place where others won't knowingly end up at these sites, then let them be!!! I think in the end, all the anger and resentment stems from the fact that in very public forums, there are some people who happen to overlook respect for everyone in the forum. But, if people want to do something which respects everyone in the forum, like Marlenus setting up his lyrics on his private server so those who have the album in Mp3 format can read them or some fan playing the new album over a net broadcast, and those innocent fans aren't affected, then trying to stop them from doing so is also intruding their rights to speak freely. -Bogie PS - Now, Marlenus, if you STILL have a problem with me, feel free to trot on down to 532 Beacon Street (you can get off at the Kenmore T- stop), and I'll be happy to "step away from behind the keyboard" and K- line your ass from Boston, bizotch. Or, if you would like to try picking a fight with me at a DT concert, so a crowd of people can see me whoop your ass, that's cool with me too. :P I hope you know that I'd be the last person to hide behind a keyboard in order to act tough. There are plenty of people at MIT and all over this world who may act that way because they've been picked on by others in the real world, but I certainly am not one of them! --------------------------------- Dream Theater - Lines in the Sand http://dreamtheater.mit.edu/ --------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Oct 1999 19:56:24 +0000 (UTC) From: Bert Baldwin To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Trinity/Triton prices and such Message-ID: My latest Musician's Friend has the Trinity (61-key) listed at $1,499, and no Pro or ProX models are available in it. If you go to one of my sub pages where I have my sub woofer project illustrated, http://www.isd.net/astrosch/project.html you can clearly see my Revox A77 the 7th picture. :) I have the Mk IV, it's the newest of the A77 series. Mine has the professional studio Dolby option installed. When I bought my machine, I also bought the 30' cabled remote, the solid aluminum pro NAB adapters, and the pulley kits that allows the machine to operate at: 30 & 15 IPS (inches per second) with one pulley set, 7 1/2 & 3 3/4 IPS with another. Just for shits and giggles I also have the low speed kit that allows the machine to record for 25 hours on one tape. Police dispatch centers commonly use that machine to document radio traffic so the parts were fairly cheap and readily available. If you do decide to locate and purchase one of these machines, I warn you in advance: These machines are expensive to maintain. An alignment costs about $300.00. Head & guide replacement is close to a grand. Unless you put cubic hours on the machine, you shouldn't need to replace the heads. The motors will NEVER die! I've seen wash machines with smaller motors. The electric reel brakes are very reliable, the only thing that may ever need to be replaced is the brake linings ever 10,000 hours or so, and they're cheap. The only things I've had to replace on mine is the panel lamps, and the end-of-tape detector lamp. The EOT lamp was about $12.00. The panel lamps are about $6.00 each. The bottom line: The Revox A77 is the finest 1/4" machine money can buy. It's the single most respected machine by both the recording industry, and the audiophile crowd. I will personally give an honorable mention to the Tandberg TD 20A, another fine machine I almost bought but decided to save a little longer and go for the gold. BTW, I've had my A77 since 1983 and It's STILL the reigning king of the analog world. It does pay to go hi-end because obsolescence is F A R down the road for gear that sets standards far beyond what most manufacturers are willing to produce.
