Is it THAT big a deal to some people that you can't hold out until 26 October to get even the slightest iota of information regarding the new album? If so, then there's always the newsgroups or DejaNews, so calm down. Is it the fact that the moderator of this list put his foot down and said, "Don't talk about it."? Hell, I thought that was his JOB to put his foot down, especially with a mailing list where rumors fly faster than shit out of a newborn. Is it the fact that some people just need something to bitch about in their lives? Maybe. Ultimately, though, who friggin' cares? So you want information on the new DT album and you can't get it here - the Internet is a REALLY REALLY big place, and I'm sure that if you dig hard enough, you'll find some snippet buried somewhere in the underbelly of the 'net that'll satisfy you. Until then, I'm thrilled that Skadz has put a gag-order on this, and I'm thrilled that Mike asked him to, because - even though speculation does heighten the anticipation - half the rumors that'd end up here would be so far off the mark that they'd make someone disappointed. Gotta love this attitude... You know, the band doesn't have to do fan shows during the holiday season. They could stay home with their families. Mike doesn't have to post on here or go onto online chats on his website. They don't have to stay after shows signing everything put in front of them, even if some members are sick. They don't have to do any of this, but they do anyways. Do we 'owe' them for this. Maybe not, but I know if I were in their place, I would like to feel appriciated for all the extra effort I made for the fans. They are asking for something small for this list, to keep wild speculation about the CD to a minimum. I don't think this is much to ask. I know what things were like for FII, with the Fix shows booted and on the net and all the endless speculation beforehand, it kinda felt like I heard the CD already. What I do hope, tho, is that they slowly disseminate information through the official channels. The title, the track listing, maybe even a song clip, but do it slowly over the next month. I would like to know something about it, but not a huge amount. I think this is reasonable and will satiate most of us. This ban on new album information is really separating the children from the adults on this list. I'm talking about maturity level, not the number we call age. It's becoming quite apparent who isn't acting maturely. It amazes me that some people here can be so unappreciative of the work that this band has done, to make music for their fans. I was going to make a longer post on this, but it looks like KorgX3 and Kirby and others have been saying most of it already. To the person who coined the term "Skidmarkz", I have one thing to say. Until you meet Skadz, walk in his shoes, create & maintain & moderate a mailing list for all these years, deal with immature children and spammers and all other sorts of crap, you can kindly shut up. Skadz isn't paid to be the moderator of this list. He does this out of the goodness of his heart, and the desire to create an open forum for us to use. I have personally met him and spent time with him, and he is a genuinely honest and personable guy. He makes the rules, he's following Dream Theater's wishes, end of story. We all agreed to the list rules and posting conditions when we re-subscribed to the new list recently. This shouldn't be an issue. Nobody's forcing anyone to stay subscribed to Ytsejam, so anyone who wants to leave is free to go. The door's open. You just subscribed, so I hope you can remember how to unsubscribe. And now for the more mature list readers... Dream Theater is made up of professional musicians, who have diverse talents, immense creativity, and extremely demanding standards of their own work. We've learned to trust them over the years, when they changed their styles/members, released new albums, or took chances. They're professional musicians, and they are asking us to trust them, and keep our ears and minds fresh for the new album. Insert comments about the album being a pleasant surprise here. I know the early clips of FII spoiled my first listen, since just about all the songs were in RealAudio format at some point. Robert MacAusland, this list was never "a place for *US* to hold unfettered discussions". We all agreed to the list rules when we signed up. We know the list of "taboo topics", for example Kevin vs. Derek, Metallica selling out, and others. Skadz is adding another entry to this list for a relatively short period of six weeks. If you're that impatient, that's fine, but you'll have to find and disseminate your information elsewhere. This list is not a PR vehicle... it's still a discussion forum, but we all need to remember to play by the rules. Skadz wouldn't make a rule without a damn good reason for it. He's been moderating this list long enough to know the whims from the worthwhile causes. He's neither a Nazi nor a zealot nor a censor-happy control freak. Trust him on this, for our sake. What's more, he's doing his part to make sure that this list benefits from Dream Theater, and vice versa. They do put a lot back into the list community, you know. Mike's an active reader and occasional poster on the 'jam. Dave Hatlee named off other examples of their generosity in the previous digest. Dream Theater (or their label) does not owe this mailing list (or any fans) anything. Likewise, we do not owe them anything. Nobody owes anyone anything here. If they choose not to release information, that's totally their call. If they ask us to not spread it around, that's a respectful request from musicians who want their new album to be a fresh experience for all its buyers on the release date. Skadz is honoring that request to the best of his ability. As the list owner and moderator, he's responsible for all content posted to the list. Six weeks isn't that long, really. Somehow, most of us will manage to live through the anticipation of the new album. There is life outside of Dream Theater and Ytsejam, and a little suspense never killed anybody. ;) Trust these guys. They're trained professionals. October 26th will come, the album will be released, and it will be good. In the meantime, I strongly recommend Glenn Hughes' 1997 release, "Addiction". Incredibly powerful lyrics and vocals, a strong King's-X-like rhythm section, very good bass, and searing lead guitar. Glenn is the man, and his voice is as good as ever. Anyone else have this? The narrator doesn't sound a bit like KJLB either, come to think of it (maybe it's Myung). The weirdest part for me, though, was that it didn't say "Dream Theater" anywhere on the packaging, the closest thing to an album title being "Time Life Books Presents Home Repair For Beginners". As for rumors and speculation, I don't know. It might be fun for the uninformed, but also increase the chances of a leak. Everyone privileged enough to have access to first hand information, promo copies etc. have been told not to post it on mailinglists or web pages. If one of us were to ignore this and reveal the information and upload mp3's, we would loose our credibility as "official whatever". That would, in turn, make the job of, for example running a fan club, much harder. It would also spoil the surprise for many fans. And what's the point of running a fan club if you can't get along with the band? Believe me, all of us would love to tell you everything about the album, but we can't. It has NOTHING to do with power. > Are there any alternative mailing lists? Try the newsgroup alt.music.dream-theater! There have already been some spoilers over there, just because some idiots think like: "I know what the tracklisting is, and I'm the coolest person in the world because of it!" Or you could start your own list, perhaps: email_address_removed ;-) In conclusion, we can't reveal information because Mike told us not to! What's so hard to understand about that? If he says that the magic word of the day that you can't use is "No discussion of the new DT album" then you can't use those words. Plain and simple. He has the right to make that decision because he, unlike us, pays for this godforsaken list. Live with his rules. There is plenty of other DT and NDTC that we can discuss in the weeks coming up to the release of DT's new album. The suprise is multifold (new musician, new style) and to spoil it would mean a lump of coal in your stocking at Christmas. Remember when you were a kid and you searched desperately for the presents that your parents bought you? When you found them you peeked underneath the wrapping... and what happened on Christmas day? You knew what you were getting and it totally took away from the excitement. Sure, you were glad to have the gifts but you already knew what to do with them before you got them. That is a direct relation to what is going on here. Censorship is not being able to speak your mind on any front at all. So, go call someone and talk about. Skadz says "Just don't do it here." I think that is a more than reasonable request and its not censorship. DT rules, and I respect them even more for making it this way. No, totally...I didn't make it very clear. I look for extreme diversity and the ability to pull that off in a band - I think that was what I was getting at mostly, just that Tiles has the ability to change styles and make it work really well. You're right, PoS and Superior are really not a whole lot like Tiles in terms of the instrumentation or the type of sound or music they put out, but I think each band is tight as hell, and terrific at what they do. I think I was trying to make a comparison between the quality and diversity of Tiles, PoS, and Superior. Perhaps in my mind, bands that I really enjoy listening to are all lumped together just because they rock, not because of any particular style or sound they tend towards. Sorry if that wasn't clear, because it wasn't :) Jim Mckenzie, you need to chill out. Korg was kidding, and doing a damn good job of it :) You seriously think DT would put out a song entirely in French? Get your head checked! Thank you Skadz for reiterating my (and others) wish NOT to be told anything about the album until the 26th (or thereabout). But a complete ban on anything regarding the new album? We are DT fans, foaming at the mouth, and we can't talk about the new album on their very mailing list? I think Korg should get a lift on this ban - I love reading his skewed takes on this topic. Plus, I think most of us are jaded enough not to take anything seriously until a veteran speaks confirming or denying anything. I, for one, don't believe for a second the album has the same name as a Mike Bahr bootleg, so rumors about that aren't affecting me much. We love to speculate, I don't think that should be considered illegal. And even if someone did come here and let the cat out of the bag, it isn't going to be a terrible tragedy. I've been lurking for quite a while now, perusing the digests for any little tidbits of info that caught my eye. What have I noticed most? What is most prevalent? It seems to me that people really LOVE to repeat what other people have said. Take, for instance, this talk about the new album. Half of the posts talk of why we should be able to spill the beans, and the other half why we shouldn't -- but all in all, people just keep saying the same things over and over. ;) Now for something music-related -- I haven't done much surfing for this, I guess I will spend the rest of my workday checking it out, but I have not been able find any Pain of Salvation sites. I'd love to get some background info on the band, tour info, concert reviews, news on a new album... maybe even live audio/footage (of course, for listening to it only once... I'd never actually KEEP the files, and MOST CERTAINLY wouldn't burn them to CD!) if such a thing exists... If you know of any sites, let me know. It probably wouldn't hurt to send it to the list... Finally, I ordered Lemur Voice's "Divided" over a month ago from MOREMETAL.COM. It's still not here... Marcel said it was backordered there. Does anyone have an idea of when these CDs might get shipped? I'm dying to get the CD -- I am really into Marcel's playing, what I've heard of it. By the way, have any of you heard of a band called Esthero? I've been passing out a few mp3s to people, trying to get the interest up in this band. The people I've send the mp3s to on #ytsejam have dug the music... if you're interested, they're a beat-driven/hip-hop (don't scoff, this stuff is good!)/jazz/rock sound, with female vocals. This is not "proggressive" in terms of "prog rock/metal" but it certain has it's own distinctive sound, and in that way, it's helping music to "progress" ... so doesn't that make it "progressive"? :) Jeff ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Sep 1999 13:36:26 PDT From: "Simon Asselin" To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: korg's agressive attitude Message-ID: Man, you need to take a valium. No one's doing anyone special favors here. The band can ask about respecting their wishes to keep quiet about the new album 'till the cows come home. None of us is obligated to do it. If you have a respect for the band, then don't. Some people prefer not to go out into the store and dish out (what is unfortunately running close to 20 dollars in some stores these days) for an album that turns out to be a piece of crap. There's no reason to throw insults around becuase there are people who have a different opinion than you, but if you want to get on that train - you're penis is obviously diminuative, your mother forfeited her purity to me at your conception, and you're easily the ugliest son of a bitch that God accidentally placed on this Earth, thus negating my second comment that you could even be somehow related to me. Do us all a favor, and next time, when you're thinking about posting something else to this list, insert your foot into your mouth ahead of time. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Sep 1999 17:02:48 EDT From: email_address_removed To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: new Vanden Plas Message-ID: Far Off Grace kicks ass! it's really amazing, everything is better than in the God Thing. Gunter Werno is the perfect guy to put between Kevin Moore and Derek Sherinian. The keyboards sound modern and punchy, the bass/drums have been boosted too and Andy Kuntz is fine too. In the limited edition, there is a mini booklet of 32 pages with photos of the members when they were young. You can hear a sample at my website, check it out! Message-ID: First of all, can we all agree on one thing? We all care very much about DT and their music! Now, if Mike and Co. have decided to not release any information on the new album, there's NOTHING we can do about it. Period. End of story. Get used to it! However-If we're being told that we can't even theorize about it (possible titles, will Metropolis II be on it? Will they use any FII leftovers?), that just smacks against everything that has made "our" band. Face it, DT is a relatively small band that is sustained by the strength of it's fans. WE got ACOS released, when any other band wouldn't have had the fan support to do so! If WE want to talk about what WE think is on the CD, WE will find a way! Censorship just plain sucks! Message-ID: <000d01beff06$1a97df80$b217c1cf@jtracy> If you really want to hear something from the new album early: download the third studio movie at www.mikeportnoy.com . It contains about twenty seconds of a soft piano piece with John on acoustic guitar. Most of you know about this I'm sure, but maybe some of you who aren't patient enough to wait for the album will be tided over for a good minute and a half. : ) -John T. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Sep 1999 16:15:36 -0500 From: "Lisa Centorrino" To: Subject: Re: Ytsejam mailing list T shirts. Message-ID: Since everyone else has put their two cents worth in....... As with many of you, the anticipation is quite frankly killing me. To start shitting all over the band, though, because they want to keep things a surprise for their fans is absolutely assinine to the nth degree. So many other bands and purveyors of entertainment would completely capitialize on this anticipation and milk it for all it's worth until it became nothing more than a heaping pile of overblown POOT...for more on this subject see Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. DT has undoubtedly given more to their fans than any other band in the way of free clinics, Christmas shows and CD's, and all around great music. Those of us who call ourselves true DT fans should in return show our appreciation to the band by honouring their simple request. For those of you who do not take kindly to the element of surprise, I urge you to listen to Casey Kasem's Top 40 or check out the Billboard Hot 100...you won't be disappointed. The true DT fans will wait patiently and judge for themselves unbiasedly on October 26th... ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 5067 **************************
