Here are a couple excerpts for DT fans. I let the cat out of the bag on this when I did the Mullmuzzler give away. Here's the official notice for our James LaBrie IRC Chat . James La Brie, vocalist for Dream Theater and his recent solo project, Mullmuzzler, will be joining The Artist Shop and Talk City on Wednesday, September 8 at 9pm eastern/6pm pacific. Inspired by his father, James started singing and playing drums at age 5. By the age of ten, he was performing in a barber shop quartet with his father, uncle and brother. Yet James' real love was rock music which he pursued by his early teens. At age 21, he began vocal training with the renowned vocal coach Rosemary Patricia Burns. After working with several Canadian bands, James became the vocalist for Winter Rose, which almost signed with Atlantic Records. Then Pierre Paradis, who managed the band Voi Vod, approached James regarding a solo project with Aquarius Records. He also told James about a New York based band called Dream Theater who were looking for a vocalist. The rest, as they say, is history. James will join us to discuss his latest project, Mullmuzzler, slated to be released on Magna Carta in late August. With the help of the venerable Terry Brown, producer of Rush's output during the '70's, James built, shaped, then fine-tuned nine distinct, heartfelt and often bombastic tracks, all of them co-writes with an army of the field's hottest creators including members of Shadow Gallery, Matt Guillory of Dali's Dilemma, and Trent Gardner from Magellan and Exploreres Club. So the writers planted the seed and the players made it grow. Towards that end, Jame tapped co-writer and keyboardist Matt Guillory, scary Zappa-orbiting guitarist Mike Keneally and his gravity-defying bassist from Beer for Dolphins, Bryan Beller, plus Mike Mangini (best known for his work with Extreme and Steve Vai) for a little musical witchery down in LA. The result is a banquet of purifying rock, some of it slamming in a Zeppelin frame of mind, some of it reminiscent of Queen and possibly Styx, some of it simply the most elegant classic rock you will ever hear. And, hopefully, James will also share with us the progress being made on the forthcoming Dream Theater album! Speaking of Mike Keneally who turned in such a masterful performance on the Mullmuzzler album, on our Mike Keneally/Immune page you'll find his forthcoming release, Nonkertompf!!! Mike's seventh album, Nonkertompf, is an instrumental effort featuring Keneally playing everything, including guitars, keyboards, drums, sax, a stool and about a dozen other devices. It's a 74-minute stream-of-consciousness flight-of-fancy that takes the listener on an unparallelled sonic journey. Countless styles and moods are explored and seamlessly sewn together, always with extraordinary musical precision, rich orchestrational sense and a very big heart. After two successful U.S tours of his own in 1998, Keneally is set to embark on a worldwide tour with Steve Vai, during which he'll be aggressively promoting Nonkertompf on each stop of the journey. Nonkertompf is Mike's very first release on his own brand new label, Exowax! On our Immune page you'll also find the following gigs for Mike Keneally and Beer for Dolphins: MK/BFD Wednesday Night Workouts Wednesday, September 1, 9:30 p.m. & 11:30 p.m. Last in the series. Arash, please! While I would agree that "Surrounded" was pretty nice, and Empty Tremor are really good at doing the same thing they're doing all the time (cloning DT), the "Metropolis" cover just SUCKS. C'mon, before I just THINK about covering (copying!) a quite difficult and demanding piece like "Metropolis" I'd ask myself if I'm really capable of doing this or if I should spend another year or two in the rehearsing room. These guys didn't. Obviously. Their drummer's timing sounds like he's falling downstairs with his kit (a phrase once used for describing the Venom drummer ;-)) >just how good James LaBrie is. These guys can all hit the notes, yes, but >there's no power there. [...] They can't. Listen to the Eleventh Hour singer. And you are complaining about James' live vocals... CMKY's cover of Surrounded was different, very nice vocals, though she should better quit Mariah Carey mode ;-) Their original song fits her voice even better, very weird and dark stuff, a bit too much of everything, but at least it's not another plain DT clone. Both the cover and the original were among the few tracks I listened to with interest (and without getting spasms everywhere ;-)...). I also sort of liked the original track by Moon Of Steel, I guess the female vocals help a lot, I'm really sick of those thin (male) prog metal voices. If you want a great tribute album, get the ELP tribute "Encores, Legends & Paradox", featuring James, Mike, Derek, and Jordan, and many other great players and singers. They followed a simple rule for making cover versions: Create something new and interesting without destroying the original. Just listen to the surprisingly funky "A Time And A Place", or the incredible "Karn Evil". Actually I like some, if not most of the cover versions better than the originals! Very refreshing stuff. I can't imagine someone with two ears left say that about the covers on Voices. Are there any sound files on the web I can find with this guy? Wait a minute, I just remembered.... he's on Age Of Impact, isn't he? Shite, I may have to dig that one back out... the album as a whole did nothing for me (and I really like some of Magellan's stuff... dunno what the problem was with AoI, tho'), so I listened to it once and put it away. I think I liked 1 song off it.... Impact 2, maybe? Bah... anyway, are there any other sound files out there where I can get a taste of Bozzio? Thaingks... Matt T. Here's a nifty little trick to finding old jam's that few people seem to know about... Skadz does a damn sweet job of keeping old 'jams available to everyone on the dreamt ftp server. Just copy and paste this into your browser (or click it if your mailer supports web links :)) and it'll take you to the Jam Files. :) Be patient, it takes a little time to load. All of the files are in ytsejam.#### format. Double-clicking should open it right up to read. :) ftp://ftp.dreamt.org/pub/ytsejam/ for all of your Ytse-needs. :) I think there's supposed to be a way to fetch jams from the server via email, but I can't remember how you do it...
