The good ole' 8-bit NES had 2 square waves, a saw wave, and a pcm noise generator, and that had to cover both music and sound effects. The title music would usually have the squares playing melody and harmony while the saw played bass and the pcm handled percussion, but that was only 3 actual notes at a time. The backround music was usually just one square and the saw, while the rest handled sound effects. Since chords weren't an option, the music would usually consist of counterpoint or arpegios. And since technicality wasn't an issue, the composers were free to use polyrhythms, odd meters, wide interval leaps, and extremely fast passages as often as they wanted. Since most prog bands are trying to get away from the standard chords and melody songs as much as possible, they usually use the same techniques. Plus the fact that most prog musicians are geeks like us and played way too many video games growing up. :) kevin _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. I can't remember which level it was, but one of them had a re-make of "Lie", and one of my friends who was standing right behind me goes,"hey, that's Dream Theater!" to which I of course replied,"Dream what?" Then we went down the hall to his dorm room and he played me parts of his Awake CD and his I&W cassette, and in a blinding instant of revelation, Metallica (sadly) was no longer my favorite band. But hells yeah, it sounds like video game music, in fact, there's this teeny tiny musical phrase (about one second long) of "Another Dimension" right at 2:27 that always makes me think of this computer game called "Tyrian" for some reason. In my opinion, the Blair Witch Project could have been really good, but it did not contain nearly enough prog :) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 08 Aug 1999 01:39:54 GMT From: "Isaac Trumbo" To: email_address_removed Subject: er re Message-ID: >note- 'Theatre' is actually the correct way to spell the word, just whoever >was writing the first American dictionaries >thought it would be a good idea to fuck up some of the words like 'colour' >and stuff. this is true but dream theatER the band has stated that they have a real problem with their name being spelled dream theatRE.. and there you have it inferno NP: sisters of mercy - first and last and always _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. I think the whole intro to "New Millenium" sounds like a video game... === *Trent "I don't feel like Satan, but I am to them. So I try to forget it any way I can."
