In fact, when I play a DT song such as Metropolis for a friend who is curious, the most frequent comment is "this sounds like a video game" (during the crazy instrumental sections). This could have something to do with the electronic/keyboard sound textures, but I also think it is the prog style of composition. Japan is quite receptive to prog metal, and most video games are designed in Japan. Hmmmm. In fact, the first place I heard of Dream Theater was back in 1992 or so, in a video game magazine called Gamefan. Thanks for the Castlevania MP3 link, I'm gonna check it out now. ________ NP: Steve Tibbetts -- The Fall of Us All ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Aug 1999 23:37:12 -0700 (PDT) From: Janne Jokitalo To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: Actually I find Ice Age to be similar to Boyz II Men! PRIMORDIAL - A Journey's End (Misanthropy Records - 015) What would Opeth sound like if they had been exposed to the celtic influences of Ireland in their early years? Pretty much like Primordial I guess. Complex, avant garde arrangements, good and varied vocals, some Floydian touches, acoustic passages that remind me of Ulver from time to time, and everything executed very professionally. Add some traditional Irish instruments, lots of atmosphere and some distinctly black metal parts and you end up with a very interesting and promising album. Parallels to Waylander are obvious, but the sound is very different - this album can be much more melancholy, especially the song "Solitary Mourner". The final and instrumental track "On Aistear Deirneach" is a fitting way to close the album and a track that leaves me wanting more. 8/10 SPIRIT CARAVAN - Jug Fulla Sun (Tolotta Records - TOL04) Spirit Caravan is the new group of Wino, mastermind, singer and guitarist of the legendary Obsessed. He sings like Ozzy and Lemmy had a sexual encounter sometime (he almost looks like Lemmy too, but without the warts). Doomy riffs abound, fuzz and wah-wah pedals help create a wonderful, warm gut-wrenching wall of sound and the whole album is very trippy (but not as wigged out as e.g. Cathedral or Electric Wizard). This album proves that doom doesn't have to be dark and depressing. The bass player and the drummer do an excellent job of providing Wino with enough space for some very solid guitar solos. Songs vary from mid-tempo doom/hard rock to slow down-tuned killers like "Lost Sun Dance". This album simply grooves. Very honest and no bullshit. My favourite doom/stoner/desert album of the summer. Hence 10/10. Count me out for living on the Ytse-Island. Life would get pretty boring pretty quick just listening to prog all day, with nobody but other prog-heads to talk to, regardless of their gender. The opposite of selling out is buying in - obvious. I don't really think that many small bands make money when they tour in support slots. They get to sleep in the tour bus for free, get food and possibly booze paid for, and that's usually it. Mecrchandising may bring in a bit, but my guess is that the members of support bands often make a loss (taking vacation as well in order to tour). Ask the guys from Superior or Vanden Plas and I'm sure they'll confirm this.
