I just got it, I think on Monday, >(it's practically brand new), listened to it and just can't get into it. So Ouch. I am VERY surprised there hasn't been more Planet X talk since the album's release. I was always pretty ambivalent towards Derek, but this album (and his playing on Platypus, for that matter) just blows me away. He is really proven that his bag of tricks lacks for nothing. Speaking of lacking for nothing, I've got two words: Virgil. Donati. Yes, the guy doesn't have a kit the size of Tokyo, but god, the guy is just mind-blowingly tight. When I first heard he was 'all feet', I had visions of some guy who just pounded 64th notes on double bass, which a lot of guys can do (and shouldn't). Donati's feet are incredibly rhythmic - I mean, he sounds like he's doing stuff that's could keep most other drummers in fits. Heck, between his feet and his snare, he almost doesn't need to do anything else. Can you tell I hope Planet X is around for a while? As to your point (which I now realize I snipped), a band could release a DVD audio album packed with interviews, studio tracks, maybe some live tracks, ads for merchandise, videos, some other shit. Let's not forget that DVD is double sided (as I understand it, anyway). That might open up a new arena... As far as sound quality goes, I'm not audiophile. Hell, I'm tone deaf. Unless an mp3 is extremely shitty quality, it sounds just like the CD to me. And anyway, as long as the freakin' thing's listenable, what the fuck do I care if it's "CD quality" or not? Just because what JP was playing in the Bear Tracks video was mellow, and there were no heavy or complex bands in "insparation corner" doesnt mean that the album cant have a good chunk of ultra progressive shred or some heavy stuff. What if the only examples from Awake that you heard before the album came out were The Silent Man and Lifting Shadows? I bet you'd all say "oh, DT's gone mellow, they're not doing any heavy stuff" then when you actually heard the album and got smacked in the face by The Mirror coming off of TSM, you'd probably change your mind. So don't try to second guess what the new album is gonna sound like by a few sparse examples, DT is too diverse to be judged so easily. He mentions something about the new album I think the skeptics should take notice of. Its not an exact quote, but it was something like this: "When DT first started out, we were really enthusiastic about that spontaneous, play-as-much-as-you-can stuff, but as we became more professional and better at writing songs and melodies, that passion dissapeared a bit. As soon as we started recording LTE1, I felt that passion again, and I brought it back to DT, re-dedicated to playing fast and furious, while still being melodic" I dunno about you, but judging by that statement alone, DT99 is gonna kick some serious arse. And they're not about to let it get stalled because nobody could get > people transmission rates that make the whole internet experience less > frustrating and time consuming. This is only partially true. High bandwidth will revolutionize the internet and really make it an integral part of everyone's lives, but there is still a long ways to go (from a venture capitalist standpoint) with old fashioned dialups. Over half of American households still don't have an internet connection. And the rest of the world lags WAY behind that. Lots of money left to be made even without high speed. > > so.. when that happens. When new cable, fiber optics etc.. is in place, > expect to see the true colors of the digital music revolution. Don't expect The first round of high bandwidth will not lead to non-lossy formats. Even on a t1 a 50 meg download (your average song in a non-lossy format) is a hefty download. I fear once people really get on the bandwagon, cable is going to slow to a crawl. And then there's storage of the beast. One song isn't a problem. But download an entire album (hours), and store your whole music collection on your hard-drive as wav's (500 megs+ per album)... not gonna happen. Once we all have 100+ gig hard drives and fiber optics directly to our machines, then we'll talk about non-lossy sound formats. > record labels to die out. They will change. We'll all have cool digital audio devices, and our stereos will all play digital audio files, but if I record something in my little home studio I'll have to fork over a pile of dough so that I can get it SDMI certified or whatever or else you all won't be able to play it (not that you'd want to hear me play anyhow, but just for the sake of argument). It's a great idea, because, like, I think the recording companies really don't have enough power over the industry right now. I certainly hope the public rejects this like they did DIVX. The recording industry is pretty much here with their hat in hand begging for the public to throw 'em a bone so they can retain their oligopoly power and keep screwing us all. The pathetic thing is, if I were a betting man, I'd bet they pull it off. They've so completely whipped the media into a frenzy about mp3 and piracy that they don't know the difference between the two, and the recording companies won't even have to advertise for SDMI because the media will pass it off as the greatest thing since sliced bread. > Is that once the dist. of music goes digital that the emphasis on "hit" > songs will grow even more absurd. Individual song distribution will definitely have it's effect on the way music is recorded and distributed. Probably not in expected ways. How about a concept album serial... come back next week for the exciting conclusion to Operation Mindcrime. Here's a question for you. What about radio/mtv once all that has converged with high bandwidth computer communications? People could capture the bitstream and get high quality files of any music played over sources like that. Do they try and combat that technology, or just designate a certain amount of songs to be free. If they do the later, how does that tie into individual song distribution, and the idea of hit songs... What good is a hit if A) it's free and B) you can acquire songs individually. There may be no profit in being a one-hit wonder. You would have to develop a reputation as being consistently good to make money. I don't know. It's all so confusing. My brain hurts. > What if find exciting ( I know, this is getting long, but I think about this > alot) is with the new distribution media and the dropping cost of decent > quality recording gear, that small studios with smaller budgets will be able > to get artists recorded and distrubuted easier and more efficiently than > ever. If people have to pay a lot of money and go through a drawn out process to get SDMI certified this isn't going to happen. For commercial reasons all (or nearly all) digital audio devices, digital audio compatible stereos, and digital audio software will be SDMI certified, and won't play any files that aren't likewise SDMI certified. Truly it's a beautiful system these guys cooked up. There will probably be a small hacker underground with their old fashioned non-certified players that enjoys uncertified files, but that might be it. > Subject: Nigthwish Tourdates ! > > >THURSDAY 18.11.1999 NETHERLANDS GRONINGEN Vera > >FRIDAY 19.11.1999 GERMANY OSNABRUCK Works > >SATURDAY 20.11.1999 BELGIUM VOSSELAAR Blebob > >SUNDAY 21.11.1999 GERMANY BOCHUM Zeche > >MONDAY 22.11.1999 GERMANY SAARBRUCKEN Garage Ummm, so when are they coming to Wisconsin?
