CDs could not make casette tapes obsolete, since you could not record on to a cd (originally) -- CDs did, however, make vinyl records obsolete, except in fringe circles, such as super-high-end analog gear, and the club/dance/dj end. MP3 will not replace CDs since the sound quality is not as good, and it's not a medium so much as an encoding. You can't really hand something that is a definitivie "mp3" to a friend, it still requires another transmission medium, such as a floppy, burned CD or ethernet/modem connection. There's nothing to stop someone from making a CD boom box that plays .mp3 files off of a CD. The two technologies are unrelated. I won't go into why the record "industry" fears the mp3 "industry" -- we should all know that by now. The MP3 "Industry" (if it can be called that) is still really in its first stages. It's far too early to start decrying the death of anything just yet. ~Chris ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jul 1999 14:44:44 EDT From: "Kevin Hammer" To: email_address_removed Subject: Nuno n' Co. What I do think MP3, and the like, will do is keep the recording industry on it's toes, by forcing them to deliver us a better product, and who knows, maybe a cheaper one too!! ~~Art www.joestump.com "Pat Sullivan" wrote: <>> ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jul 1999 15:13:54 -0400 From: Carlos Alfaro To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: The Gathering Message-ID: If you have icq, please contact me thru it, my UIN is 1254229 ill gladly encode some Gathering for your listening pleasure Tom Tubbiola wrote: > Can anyine point me to a website with some MP3s of newer The Gathering songs? It was about the possibility of mp3 eventually replacing CD's, and had some information about mp3.com going public (stocks), as well as Alanis Morrisette's huge mp3.com shareholding. Anyway, the article said that the artists themselves have, for the most part, no objection to the distribution of music over the net in an mp3 type format. They hope someday to make it marketable, and many artists see these formats as a way to regain control of their music from record labels, and their monopoly of how music is distributed. Anyone interested should check out the article. It's in the Rolling Stone with Nicole Kidman on the front holding a hat over her bare bosoms. If you can't find it, I guess I could type up a copy of it for those who want to read it, if asked nicely... I wish that I could see them on this tour (grrr!) 'cause their set list sounds KILLER!! Anyway, I have a couple of questions regarding the boyz, and I hope that someone out there can help... 1.) What was the intro the band used on the "Piece Of Mind" tour? I have an UNREAL boot from the tour called "Die With Your Boots On". BTW, if any Maiden fans have a chance to pick this one up, do so! The quality and performance are both top notch! Anywho, there was a symphonic type of intro before they burst onto the stage with "Where Eagles Dare". Having never seen the movie, I was wondering if the intro was the theme song for the flick "Where Eagles Dare". 2.) The AMAZING intro the band used on the "Somewhere In Time" tour, I am pretty sure, was from the movie "Blade Runner". BTW, another killer boot to keep your eyes open for is called "The Greediness".... a great CD of a tour that for some reason has not been documented much. Anyway, the reason I know the intro was from Blade Runner is because I saw the movie's closing credits one day while flipping channels, and there was a variation on the Maiden intro that was playing while the credits rolled. So I bought the soundtrack by Vangelis. The closing theme I'd heard is included on the CD, but that's the closest thing to the Maiden intro that's on the CD. My question is, are there other pieces of music in the movie that are not included on the CD, and if so, and if anyone knows the exact piece of music IM used for their intro, where can I find a good recording of it on CD? While discussing the "Somewhere In Time" tour, does ANYONE out there have a definitive boot, either audio or video, from the tour they want to sell or trade? I have "The Greediness" CD, and a show from Madison WI on CD, I think, and a video from Troy NY. From what I've heard, the European tour had a much better set list than the USA tour. They cut out songs like "Sea Of Madness" and "Where Eagles Dare" from the American tour. I'm dying to get my hands on a complete, uncut, mint recording of a show on the European tour if they played all that I think they did. Anyway, e-mail me if you have any stuff from this tour you're willing to part with or trade for. Thanx in advance, Jammers!! Oh yeah..... DTC? I must agree. A lot of jammers seem to think that mp3 will somehow make CDs obsolete. It would take a miracle from God On High himself to make that happen. I think record labels are more likely to be done away with, but the truth is even that is unlikely since record labels can promote the shit out of their artists. An mp3 cannot promote itself. It's a sort of Mexican standoff, really. Record labels have the money, mp3 has the audiences captivated. This will be interesting to watch, but as I stated, it's not going to make any immediate difference beyond thinning a lot of corporate bankbooks, which suits me fine since they're a bunch of cocksuckers anyway... === *Trent "Here he comes, he's a man of the land he's Leatherman, smile on his face, axe in his hand." That's all there is to it. I'm not a BSB fan and I don't think I ever will be, but the fact is that they're hella marketable. So MTV sees that and they think to themselves "Hm, now what videos should we play? Menudo, KC & The Sunshine Band or Backstreet Boys?" Common sense dictates that since BSB are so popular, you'd be a fool to not capatilize on that popularity yourself and play their videos. Why? B/c the public wants to see those videos. How do you know? B/c that's what they're buying. There really is no difference. === *Trent "Here he comes, he's a man of the land he's Leatherman, smile on his face, axe in his hand."
