Message-ID: <63E392974AF3D211A88600104B93BD8B02D869@bham-xchg> Hey, I too am wondering where the "They've already re-written MET2 with JR" thing has come from. If they have - it will be on the CD, no point in wasting time on it otherwise. My big question, and not wanting to burst the "Concept Album" bubble, is - how do you write a concept album at the same time as recording it. Surely they must have already had the concept comming together long before entering the studio with it, but there was no inkling of that from Mr Portnoy. Also, JR hasn't been in the team long enough. I can't see the DT guys saying "Hey JR, welcome to DT, we've already got a concept for the new CD". The other problem with a concept album, is the lack of commercial viability. FII was a real "Radio Airplay" cd, maybe with JR joining and the success of LTE they may be leaning more heavily on their progressive side (and nothing would make me more happy), but this is not a Magna Carta release, this is an East West release and we all know that the DT boys want to be more successful and more popular. Of coarse this could be their last "contractualy agreed" CD with EW, which could turn into a "Look at the size of our concept album, now fuck you 'cause we're off to Magna Carta, oh and by the way, thanks for not promoting us properly". That would be pretty funny. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. We could all just slag DT99 off, saying that it must be shit, that's why there's been no news. We could really pick holes in Mike's drumming and, eventually, just maybe, MP will crack and tell us all about it in one massive flame.....it's a long shot....but it just....might....work.... What reasons would they have for NOT putting it on the album? Lack of space; it not fitting in with the rest of the album's concept/ theme/tone; they don't wanna; they write something even sicker and decide to use that instead... Or - try this one on for size - since the song was already over 30 mins long, they stretch it out, add sone new pieces, rename all the different parts, and it *becomes* the new album, just under a different name (perhaps). Who knows? ___Pat Sullivan___________________________ Email: email_address_removed WWW: http://home.ici.net/~psull/psull.html ICQ: 23499229 AIM: TOWHTSTS ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Jul 1999 10:18:04 -0400 (EDT) From: Vince French To: email_address_removed Subject: Euro jammers wanted... :) Message-ID: Hey jammers, I'm going to be in Europe in about a month for a month, and I'd like to perhaps get in touch with some of you if possible. Haven't posted in a while, and man, things are nuts hee. I simply can not believe the balls of STEEL that some of you have. Do you respect DT? Why would you then offer any suggestion about how their new album should be? Maybe Portnoy is really a strange guy and doesn't take that kind of thread as an insult, but I just think that's incredibly disrespectful. Let them write their album. Let them keep it a secret! They're doing all that for YOU, not to "make you crazy" and not because they're afraid of anything. I don't know anyone in the bad, but I am SURE that as a musician, each member of the band wants nothing more than to put together what he feels is the best possible album, and give it to you for your enjoyment. Don't pretend that you should have any input in that process. Bearing that in mind, I don't see one good argument as to why this new album couldn't be written around Metropolis 2, or couldn't be a giant expanded Metropolis 2. "It's only 23 minutes of music... so it can't be" doesn't mean anything, nor does "I don't think they'd do that" Unless Portnoy comes in and tells everyone what the album will be, let's just wait and see what happens rather than debate something this inane. - Chris ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Jul 1999 11:13:04 -0400 (EDT) From: John Parks To: ytsejam dream theater Subject: DT99 concept album... Message-ID: Well I really don't think this album will be a concept album. The only reason why I don't think that it will is because of the coment that James makes on the 5th mpeg clip on Mikes site. He said that he hadn't started to record at that point and in the next few weeks they would begin to write the lyrics. Now maybe it's just me, but one would think that if it were to be a concept album the lyrics might have been written and rewritten by this point. I think lyrics usually have a strong influence along with the music in a concept album so by them not even having started on them.... well I don't know where I am really going with this. Just something to think about. Honestly I would like them to do what Spocks Beard did with Day For Night and that is put the epic (MET2) at the end of the album. When I listen to D4N all the way through that last piece brings closure to the cd. later all === John Parks email_address_removed Information is not knowledge, Knowledge is not wisdom, Wisdom is not truth, Truth is not beauty, Beauty is not love, Love is not music and Music is THE BEST -Frank Zappa- _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yeah...I know. You're probably right, but I'd like a concept album nonetheless. I just found it interesting that "Inspiration Corner" featured a heck of a lot of concept albums. So, I guess, for me, it's just wishful thinking. Who knows, maybe they had a lot of themes they wanted to tackle in their lyric writing? Maybe all those ideas were there, but they brought them out in the studio. We'll see. It's just too bad we'll have to wait for however many months. -Rob ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Jul 1999 12:35:11 -0700 From: David Dixon To: "'email_address_removed'" Subject: RE: Met2 Message-ID: <3093FD59DB69D11193AA00A0C9605649016AE819@messaging> Which is why I said, "if at all".... :) -----Original Message----- ]From: email_address_removed [mailto:email_address_removed Sent: Friday, July 23, 1999 12:27 PM To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Re: Met2 >< I really don't think this will happen.
