It's when you start telling me I'm going > to Hell because I don't share your beliefs, or I'm a bad person because > I used to do certain things, that I get angry. Eh, getting angry isn't even worth it. If it bothers you so much that you can't just ignore it...Something like "Hey, I already bought my way into Heaven! I'm at the right hand of Jesus and all it cost me was my firstborn!" usually works pretty well. :D On a more serious note...I've always wondered... Just because *you* (not Amanda particularly...you know who you all are) have a hangup about Christianity and some atrocities that have been done in its name doesn't mean every Christian is evil or stupid. This is the same argument that we hear from people like the Minister Farrakhan who holds every white person alive today responsible for slavery. My ancestors held no slaves, and my ancestors didn't participate in the Spanish inquisition or the Holocaust, and even if they did, that's them, not me. So what the fuck is your point? is all I have to say to people who use that kind of reasoning. On a related note... People will go on and on about how we should be open-minded and judge people for who they are, not what race, creed, or religion, but if that religion for someone out there happens to be Christianity, as soon as people find out you're going to have some closed-minded hypocrites ready to bite your head off before they even meet you. Here's a dirty little secret in late 20th century america...it's chic, especially among young self-styled intellectuals, to attack Christians. It's very post-modern, rebellious, and cool. It's very UNcool on the other hand to ridicule, for example, Moslems, because that wouldn't be very multi-ethnically aware, would it? Not showing much respect for diversity if you do that, even though Moslems, and pretty much every other major religion except Buddhists, have plenty of blood on their hands (and even Buddhists aren't squeaky clean). Hindus do plenty of killing and have for years; read about the various conflicts on the Indian subcontinent. Christians, we all know about the kind of crazy shit they've pulled. Jews used to like slaughtering all the pagans they could get their hands on, until the shoe ended up on the other foot; they haven't choked any rivers with the dead in the last thousand years simply because they haven't had the manpower for it. :P I didn't want to get into this at all, but I just felt this needed to be said. Of course, it's pointless; it won't change anything. Those of you who agree with me will continue to, and the kind of people I'm talking about will just ridicule me in their infinite wisdom and open-mindedness. So be it. But it needed to be said. -Brian ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Jul 1999 17:10:07 -0400 From: Nick Bogovich To: email_address_removed, Multiple recipients of list Subject: Re: Secrecy of new album . . . come on Mike P. . . tell us why? A Change of Seasons is not a concept album. It's an EP. It features one very long song and some live tracks. The album is almost similar to 2112 by Rush in that it features one long track which shares the same name as the album's title. And who's to say that a concept album by Dream Theater wouldn't be very progressive and/or have great melodies? I think DT would do very well in writing a concept album, at least from a musical standpoint, since they've shown the thematic element before in Images & Words (Pull Me Under riff in PMU & TTT, Wait For Sleep riff in WFS & LTL) and Awake (Erotomania (all of it), Space Dye Vest riff in The Mirror & SDV, The Mirror riff within Lie, etc.) They would just have to concentrate a little more tying an entire album of themes together, which probably wouldn't be hard for them. If the music was even that loosely tied and yet all the tracks could stand on their own as great songs (like Queensryche's Operation: mindcrime), then we'd have one killer concept album...musically speaking Of course, I'd be a bit wary about the lyrical content...I haven't seen too many concept albums accomplish much in this department besides The Who's Tommy and Quadrophenia, Queensryche's Operation: mindcrime, and Pink Floyd's The Wall. Then again, I don't think Portnoy, Petrucci, and LaBrie could even compare to Townshend, Tate & DeGarmo, and Waters. -Bogie ----------------------------------------------------- Dream Theater - Lines in the Sand http://dreamtheater.mit.edu/ ----------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Jul 1999 17:18:13 EDT From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: DT MP3 Message-ID: YOU PEOPLE HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT!!!!! Don't you think that God had any idea that something like this could happen? As science proves it, there IS a gene for homosexuality (although I haven't read any of the studies myself), which means that somehow, and for some reason, it was in God's plan, as all my religious friends would say. In addition, was Jesus's greatest commandment not: Love God with all your heart, all your mind, and all your soul, and love your neighbor as you would yourself? Seems to me that we're supposed to "forgive" (sorry, it's the only word I can think of in this situation) all the "wrongs" that people commit, which in your case would be homosexuality? In a world where we are supposed to be taught that God is all-forgiving (and I was born and raised Catholic, I've been through all the catechism and church schooling), why would we really believe that he couldn't forgive something that is natural (refer back to my earlier comment about genes). On a related note: If in Scripture it said that Jesus was going to be killed by his own people, how could the Jews be considered wrong when God knew that it was going to happen the way it did? Or how about this: I've heard AIDS referred to as a punishment for gays and for fornicators by God. If we are supposed to get punished at Judgment Day, why would God punish us on Earth as well? Wouldn't it be kinda redundant to screw you twice, once during life and once after death? These aren't challenging questions, just little things that I've stored up in my years studying religion. ------------------------------------------------- Andrew Coutermarsh email_address_removed http://cout.home.dhs.org/ Cloak on IRC ICQ: 2513441 ------------------------------------------------- "Never trust a spiritual leader who can't dance." - Mr. Miyagi ------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Jul 1999 18:32:42 -0400 From: "indii" To: Subject: Tate and Garfunkel Message-ID: <001b01bed492$1daf6420$bb83cbcf@matts> After listening to Queensryche's version of "Scarrburough Fair", from Music in Progress, i must say "Hell yeah guys.." glad someone besides me, and talented. like S&G..
