Maybe im comparing it to Dali's Dilemma's debut, but i find it very lacking. The music itself is good..but what really sucks is the sound, i mean every instrument is audible and at good levels, but the individual sounds of the instruments sound like it was recorded in a garage! I mean it doesnt sound too different to their Weaving webs of time demo! ( apart from the new singer, which is ok, but i didnt like him that much either ) Maybe i was expecting to be blown away, or my standards have been raised to high by DD's mindblowing debut, but im dissapointed. There are some highlights, and ill get to them once i can point them out. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Jul 1999 12:39:53 -0700 From: "Michael Patrick" To: email_address_removed Subject: IME, Dali's, Gordian Knot, etc. Message-ID: Not only does CDNow not list the new I Mother Earth, they don't list their other two albums, either. What the f**k is up with that? Scenery and Fish is one of the greatest things ever... Oh, and I think you can go to the bands web site and hear the entire new album in RealAudio. The new singer sounds a lot like a toned-down verion of Edwin. I've listened to Dali's 'Manifesto...' about twenty times by now and it gets better with every listen. Man, what an album. There's a ton of good bands out there that just don't have that extra ounce of 'ooomph'. DD has it in spades. Being able to write a coherent tune helps too. And with his Mullmuzzler stuff as well, Matt Guillory ain't all that far away from the progmetal hall of fame... FINALLY got Gordian Knot. Sean Malone is a genius. And does anything on Earth sound better than a Stick? I think not. Great music - smooth, quiet, hard, driving. Get it. Mike --== Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ ==-- Share what you know. I also couldn't stand to listen to the Blue Grass Boys the first time I heard them (and don't get me started on Rush!). I like 'em all now, because I listened to the OTHER parts of the music, without paying much attention to the vocals, and they just grew on me. on a completely unrelated note, I FINALLY picked up King's X's "Tape Head" yesterday. Has anyone else noticed that it sounds a lot like Doug Pinnick's "Poundhound", whereas "Ear Candy" bears extreme resemblance to Ty's "Moonflower Lane"? The cool thing about King's X's older albums is that the grungy, bluesy Doug side and the beatlesy, trippy Ty side came together to form the songs. Now it's pretty much one or the other. I know that King's X has every right to play whatever the hell kind of music they feel like, and I still enjoy their new music. Message-ID: <001601b81624$f537d7c0$message_id_removed> ROME, ITALY (AP) -- John Petrucci visited his ancestral homeland earlier this week to rally support in favor of his new "Ragu is not really Italian" campaign. Drawing a large crowd of anti-Ragu activists, he led a march into the Vatican where over one million Italians, Sicilians, and assorted other nationalities convened upon the Citta del Vaticano and hailed Pope John Paul II. Despite failing health, the Pope greeted Petrucci and his audience with great fervor and addressed the crowd. "...true Italian cuisine does not come from bottles in supermarkets, but from the heart..." Petrucci does not seek to force a discontinuance of Ragu products, but wishes to enlighten the public as to the falsehoods of their portrayal of their spaghetti sauce to be "real Italian." Authorities from Lipton, Inc., owners of the Ragu line of spaghetti sauce, claimed that Petrucci's comments are unfounded and that their sauces come straight from Mama's kitchen. Petrucci commented that such gimmicks are complete fallacies and produced aerial photographs of the large factories in which Ragu is processed shocking consumers across the world. Stunned consumer, Shelly Carter stated, "This is an atrocity! We've been misled for so many years!" When questioned as to his motives, Petrucci said, "It's only fair that people know the truth." When asked where the road will lead him next, he said that he would like to tell the world that Gerber's Baby Food really isn't manufactured by babies. This reporter is anxious to see what evidence can be turned up in that case. John Petrucci is the critically acclaimed guitarist for the progressive rock band Dream Theater. -- KorgX3 NP: Enchant - Break ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Jul 1999 18:36:49 EDT From: "Michael Bradley" To: email_address_removed Subject: Rare DT CDs for sale Message-ID: Hey all, After much consideration, I have decided to part ways with three VERY collectable DT CDs. For example, on When The Water Break is a cool hi-hat groove in 7/4 I think which Peart plays in La Villa Strangiato. I liked that groove much and I was slightly annoyed when Mr. Portnoy straightly copied it. :-) Anyway, Mike is a killer. >> Oh c'mon! Mike is way too good to be called a rip off artist! But I guess it's probably easier to point out the few things he plays that we don't like- rather than list off all of the amazing cool shit he does that you we like. So I guess I'll give you that one. << I saw the new Megadeth video last night, and the video itself was pretty cool. What I didn't care for much was the song, at least on first listen. I thought they were going back to their more aggressive style, but at least that song is very commercial sounding, not much thrash in there. I hope the new album has less of those songs, even though most of them are pretty cool, but the more aggressive Megadeth songs are just much better.>> Yeah, the song is ok I think. But I saw the video too, and the song seemed like it ended in barely 3 minutes!!! I don't even remember there being a guitar solo either!? Am I wrong? What's with that? Either there wasn't one, or it went by too fast and I wasn't paying enough attention. Oh well. At least Marty plays some cool bluesy licks at the beginning- great tone too. PEACE!!!! All I have to say is, for 40+ year olds, IM kicks more ass than most bands in their 20s. Bruce and the rest of the bands were dynamos thoughout the show, from the first song to the encores. A great light show, great sounds and great stage set made for an unforgetable night. Among the Ytsejammers I saw there were Ytsejim (I hope you guys got home all right), Josh Raisel (did you get backstage?) and none other than Mike Portnoy, who stood with his wife about ten rows in front of me. I didn't notice him until right before IM came on. I ran over to him to say hi and blam, the lights go out and IM hits the stage. I was gonna say hi after the show, but he was gone. I bet he went backstage to see some old friends from across the pond. : ) If you get a chance to see IM if they come to your town, don't miss it!
