It's the area code for rockland(where mike and I live. haw haw!),
westchester, putnam, orange, dutchess, and maybe some other counties.
basically the lower portion of the state, excluding any kind of island:
LI is 516 or maybe parts of it are 718, which is also brooklyn and
queens, and manhatten is 212. AFAIK Staten Island is 201, or at least it
should be, cuz let's face it: that's jersey. :)

I don't think any other band members other than mike live in the 914. Oh
yeah, bear tracks studio, I guess.  maybe that's got something to do
with it.

that crazy little section in AD between ~1:01.5-1:03.5
I've tried slowing it down with a good utility but I
still can't quite 'hear' it.  Can someone with a good
musical ear tab or explain that little section.

about the chromakey lyrics, yes, they're a bit odd, and truthfully the
samples get a bit annoying at times, i wish he'd just play music, but I
absolutely love the mood and playing on this album...I haven't bought it
yet, but I've heard mp3s of it and heard it at borders, and it is
definitely on the top of the list...Anyways, lyrics are my least favorite
thing in music anyway, Only exception to that is Queensryche, but really,
even DT's lyrics don't do much for me...some exceptions of course(TAMP is
the best example) but for the most part, DT and most prog bands for me are
about the music, not the lyrics.

As for LTE2, Liquid Dreams really impressed me, the other tracks were good,
but it's strange, it didn't knock me off the seat like the other tracks
did...once again, this is off of mp3s...I'll tell more when I listen to the
full album...

And also, I relistened to Lady of the Snow by Symphony X, and I REALLY
liked it, maybe I was put off by the other stuff i was listening
beforehand, but If more of their stuff is like this, I'll buy them without
pause..:)
So now, my predicament, I have too many cd's to buy, Planet X, LTE2,
Chromakey Dead Air for Radios, Platypus, Shadow Gallery Tyranny, The rest
of Spock's Beard(only have Day for Night) :( So much to buy, so little
money to buy it with...hehe

AFAIK, MP is from Long Beach, which is 5 minutes from the town I grew up in
(Oceanside).  The area code for that area (most of Nassau county) is 516.
If John is from King's Park (that's what I remember offhand), I think
that's closer to Queens, so that would be 718 or 212.  I don't remember
offhand what area has 914 ... maybe it's a hotel room reference?  Who knows.

Looking at Dream Theater and LTE stuph, [song titles, etc.] I keep thinking, 
damn! these are the coolest names I've ever seen.  Titles of songs and the 
band names are so well thought and attractive.  I love it as much as ever.  
anybody else think the same?  sorry if it sounds like i just pulled most of 
that out of my ass, because i did.
I'm not sure if i like LTE  or 2 better....

Oh yeah, forgot to mention Stryper <grin>.  Actually, as cheesy as
Stryper was (of course, weren't a lot of 80's metal bands :), they did
influence a lot of Christian bands (some of which are really good) that
came after them.  For example, Klank covered a Stryper song (can't
remember which one) on a tribute that came out a few years ago, Crimson
Thorn (brutal death metal) covered "Loud 'N Clear" on a tribute album of
various tunes/bands.  Even Guardian (another cheesy Christian metal band
that I used to dig a lot) released their version of Stryper's first album
"The Yellow and Black Attack" (gotta love that bumblebee meets Barbie
Doll look :).  
So, the bassist at the recent Planet X show (can't recall his name)
possibly played with Vai on the Fire Garden tour?  Was he a rather large
black guy?  If it's the same guy, he kicks some major ass.  I remember
the Vai show a couple years ago (one of the few, yet killer shows I went
to alone) in St. Louis and was completely wowed by him (not to mention
Mike Keneally on guitar/keys).
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones (for whoever it was that asked and whoever
else is curious) is primarily jazz and bluegrass influenced.  Great great
jamming stuff.  I sometimes hesitate to use the word "prog" to describe
music that isn't really obviously "prog" (i.e. DT, Yes, ELP, etc. etc.
etc.), but I would say they do have some prog elements here and there. 
All very accomplished musicians with certainly a distinct sound.  Victor
Wooten is one of the most amazing bassists I've seen (and a really
humble, nice guy, too).  I highly recommend them to anyone who likes good
music, especially those who are more into the jazz side of things.

That is cool to hear. I have been a major MacAlpine supporter since the 
mid-80's. I have mentioned him on this list before but he has a very 
heavy-duty shredder image that most will not even give him a try.

Personally I think the whole alternative movement sucks and I dont see why 
so many people came to hate shredders.
Was it Nitro?Impelletari?Malmsteen?

Check out Maximum Security for some of the most amazing taseful/bluesy
melodic shred you have ever heard. No prog here but its not all 64ths 
either...I would go as far to say that at either speed <slow/fast>
he is more tasteful than Malmsteen and has better tone.

He makes a 80s era BC Rich w/Peavey sound better than Yngwies Marshalls and 
vintage Strats.
Now, I believe he plays Hughes and Kettner and Wahburn now but his other 
material ive heard does not touch Maximum Security.
He jams with George Lynch <Dokken> and Jeff Watson <Night Ranger>on three 
songs and pulls off the most amazing cover of Chopin ive ever heard.

Believe it or not he is a more accomplished key player than Derek.
Derek has more professional names under his belt <having worked with> but 
MacAlpine is classically trained. I think its funny that if he ever deceided 
to give up modern music he could make a wealthy living as a concert pianist.
The man IS a talent.

Well the Dali's disc finally arrived. Well, they aren't the second coming...

They are good but I expected from all the great reviews the disc to be
something better. I'll listen to it more and definitely keep the disc but
what does everyone think is so great about it?

recently I've gotten the Ice Age, Dali's and the new Def Leppard and DL wins
it... All my opinion though...

You know, this is the exact discussion I had with a drummer I play with
recently. Lemme tell you that he's one of the hugest DT fans I have ever seen,
he really belongs to the Ytsejam community, but unluckily he doesn't have 
e-mail, so despite teh fact that he loves prog it was strange for me to
hear that he had never heard any Rush. He sure had heard bout them, tho...
So, I gave him Moving Pictures to listen to... And the very next day he
cam to me REALLY disappoinetd and said: "I thought DT were original dudes,
that
they didn't copy anybody's style, but they completely ripped-off the Rush's
one!!!" 
As for me I don't completely agree with him, but I gues that from some point
of view he is correct, I guess even such ann UNprogressive almub for Rush
as MovPic is somehow one of the ProgRock milestones, not to mention such
epics as 2112 or Hemispheres...

so you say that TFE is not modern sounding - well, to compare with other
stuf that came out in 96 or earlier - mna, I think you're wrong!!! To me

I dunno.  When you look back, Kev's lyrics generally tended to be abstract,
rather lending the insinuation of on idea rather than paint a picture of it.
They let you paint your own picture to an extent and his lyrics are only
there to work as a guide as to what you wish to paint.

Wow.  I think his samples, like his lyrics, aid in the songs incredibly.  I
don't think I'd actually like to listen to Mouse without hearing the
distressed gent cursing his nemesis.  And camera 4 always gives me the
creeps when I hear it for some reason.  Hell Mary, on the other hand...  I
mean, I think it's OK and all, but everytime she goes "Oh!" I get the "Oh,
oh, oh, who's that kid with the Oreo cookie?" song going in my head.  My
bad.

As far as the whole old prog thing goes, I have long admitted that I just
can't get into music older than myself (with few exceptions), but I >did<
happen to have a copy of Genesis' Selling England... in my rack so I pulled
it out and I'm glad I did!  I can't remember why I only listened to this one
once and filed it.  heheh.  I guess I'll dig out JT's Thick as a Brick and
KC's Red after this.  Is it me or do Peter Gabriel sound like Roger Waters
sometimes?  heheh.  Wacky.

Now, why was it that "Let's give it to Mikey, Mikey'll eat anything" led to
"Hey, Mikey likes it!  It's gotta be good!"  If Mikey eats anything, and
offered no physical indication that he was actually enjoying it, then how
was it deduced that it was good?  I think it's another ploy by the media to
twist people's minds.  Blah.

Flecktones is one of those bands that can't be cathegorized. I 
think they'r very much like DT in many regards. Bela Fleck is
arguably worlds finest banjo shredder, Victor Wooten plays bass
and FutureMan plays something called drumitar, an instrument he 
invented, a sort of drum machine. Various keyboards, harmonica
and horn players play on most of their albums too. 
The music... as I said, can't be cathegorized, but if you insist,
it's a perfect blend of jazz, rock, blues, pop and the list 
goes one. They are a very interesting fusion band. 
If you'r into bass, they will totally shake your booty. Wooten
is God, period. No other bass player can touch him.

For a Flecktone virgin, I would recommend checking out their 
last album that won a grammy Left Of Cool, Three Flew Over 
Cookoo Nest or their double live album called Live Art.
If you'r into banjo, Bela Fleck has also a solo album out
that feature all band members anyway :)

Listen, I don't know who the hell either of you arguing fools are, and I don't really care. I just
know that thanks to a pitiful argument between the two of you, my mailbox got flooded with shit.
I am a fairly recent fan of Dream Theater. I joined this list to learn more about what I thought
was a really cool and different band. But if becoming more of a fan requires that I turn into a
squabbling fool like either of you, I don't think I'm interested. I hope you realize that you've
just done something more demeaning to yourselves than anyone else could ever do to you. Everyone
on this list thinks that you're both, if I may quote, "cocksuckers".

Next time someone is a little overpowering with their knowledge, ignore them, don't be an ass. And
if someone else is an ass, ignore them and don't reply.

I'm probably going to unsubscribe now. I'll look for another DT list where they don't let adults
that act like middle schoolers post.

Long Island's code is actually 516, but Upstate, the area just north of NYC, 
has area code 914, and in this region is Millbrook, NY, where incidentally, 
they recorded LTE, at least I know that's where they did the first one....I 
don't have #2 yet. ;) Maybe that's the connection.

week.  Apparently, that is significantly more than any other Magna Carta

 Hello List,

  Well...  I just have to throw my two pennys into the ring here.  I havn't really seen Kansas mentioned.  Kansas has to be one of my most favorite "classic" bands.  Maybe I am mistaken, but are they the first American prog band?

  I would personally get the live album "Two For the Show" first, as I think it is a good overview of their work during their golden age.  Plus, their live songs were better than the studio stuff, I thought.  I would follow that album up with "Song For America" and "Point of Know Return".

  Just my thoughts.
