I thought they were a little too mellow for my taste, or cheesy, and nothing I listened to could get me over that. But I was listening to Ytseradio one night and I heard June.. soon after I went and downloaded the mp3 and I enjoyed it a lot. After that I checked out some stuff from the light and it really started to grow on me, and lately I can't get enough of them.. they're on my list of cd's to get at the moment (but things on that list are likely to remain there for a while due to my lack of money). I for one, dig Neal Morse's "cheesy lyrics" btw. I must say though that a couple of the songs I've heard off of Day for Night are pretty annoying (ie Skin) but Healing Colors of SOund just rules. Palpatine "Thank God I'm an aetheist" -Luis Bunel "What an incredible smell you've discovered" -Han Solo, Star Wars: A New Hope "Perhaps god gave the answers to those with nothing to say"- Savatage: Somewhere in time "So You're saying that in your scientific opinion, Bess McNeil died from an overdose of... being good..?" -Breaking the Waves ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Jun 1999 18:55:06 -0400 From: "Mike Patrick" To: Subject: Re: Spock's Beard Message-ID: <001501bebb6f$f102a940$message_id_removed> >> something a little >> heavier. It was hard to get >past the lack of guitar-presence of any kind, but the >PP&M vocals didn't help either. Great observation. Pulling out of 'crap on Trent' mode and taking a deep breath, Mike says: I LOVE 'richly layered and textured' stuff - that's why I love Jordan's playing so much - some of his sounds are percussive as hell. Texture ALL OVER the place... I think Spock's Beard capitalizes on thick layers and textures as well. Heck, Dave Meros's 'slap you in the face' bass tone alone is almost more than I can stand! Guitar-wise, (and as a general observation about the Beard as a whole) they are one band that seems to have embraced the concept that NOT EVERYONE NEEDS TO BE PLAYING 100% OF THE TIME, something most bands don't seem to grasp. Alan Morse is the posterchild for the 'less is more' school of guitar playing, and he pulls it off to wonderous results. Which reminds me of a story I just heard and i don't remember who was involved or in what context, but this young musician was playing with this older legend, and the young guy said to the older one, 'You need to be playing here.' 'No, I don't' said the legend. 'Why?' asks the younger player. The older guy says, 'Which do you think is more effective, if I come in at the beginning, play for six minutes and go out at the end, or if I come in and out of the tune ten different times? I guarantee you'll take more notice of my playing the more I come in and out'. To recap: 1) Trent's not a bad guy, just Beard-challenged. 2) Amanda will attend her first Beard show yelling, 'Hey!!!!! Play 'Puff the Magic Dragon'!!!!!' Her request will go unanswered. 3) I will go back to minding my own business. What else do I need to know? :o) Anyway, I don't care for the lyrics, but the singing is good, if a bit too harmonious for my taste. The guitar playing is good, even tho I must say I don't care for most of it. The bassist is talented and I do like that. Ditto for the drummer. The keyboardist is also talented. What am I getting at? The individual musicians are good, but the music itself doesn't really suit me. This is a discussion list, not a zombie list so don't expect my opinion to change just b/c you and few others don't agree with it. === *Trent -- check out my mp3s -- http://members.xoom.com/el_trento AIM- PageRiff ICQ- #39449102 _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? He plays the opening seconds of Don't Look Down (from the Rudess Morgenstein album) using the ribbon strip. He also abuses the pitch wheel from time to time as well, but that is irrelevant for this post. There are other places, but I don't remember them at this time. Particularly seeing as I own a 61-key version of his keyboard, and the sound that he uses for solos, patch number 40, is called "JR's lead." There is NOTHING that one of those K2500s will not do. As much as I would like a Trinity myself, if you really want to dig into it, then Kurz will chew up the Trinity and spit it out. It has a ribbon controller, a massive 3-zone ribbon in fact, centered directly above the keys. There are 8 sliders on the front panel, all assignable, 10 switches, pitch wheel, mod wheel, continuous control pedal inputs (2 of them, I think), release velocity, aftertouch, all pedals, switches, controls, and everything are totally editable. All programs are editable, the sound architecture allows you to either create a near-perfect, pristine, crystal clear real instrument sound, or demolish a Grand Piano sample to the point at which it sounds like a windstorm (true!). There are no less than 799 open slots for user sounds on the "stock" K2500s, slightly less if upgrades take some of those. It is perfectly possible, and easy, to layer up to three of those sounds for a performance, and each sound individually can have up to 32 layers. So, it's possible to assign EVERY SINLGE KEY on an 88-note keyboard to have a different sound. Each of those 88 keys can have their own DSP algorithms, functions, LFOs, envelopes, and everything else imaginable. So, as much as I would like a Trinity (or better yet the new Triton), don't you dare tell me that there's something my dear Kurz can't do. :) -- Bert, a Kurzweil fanatic ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Jun 1999 01:10:17 EDT From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: When Dream and Day Unite -- Back Cover Message-ID: >< Is it just my copy, or does everyone's WDADU back cover have a blue blotch with a strange shape on the T of track listing 7 (The Ones Who Help To Set The Sun)?
