However, after reading the rest of your post, you seem to think that fact raises you above other fans. And that I do NOT relate to. > Now, years later I see these people who have some type of elitist attitude, > about how they cannot stoop so fucking low as to tell someone new who asks > "Whats the big "M" for?" the answer without telling them that they need to > read the FAQ I don't get what is wrong with telling people to read the FAQ -- The FAQ contains the answer to their question, right? Better to tell people to read the FAQ than to tell them go hump a tree. > Would it kill any of these "long-time fans" to answer someone new without > treating the person like they dont have enough sense to read some document > that they dont know how to find??? Well, no, it probably wouldn't kill us, but we tell newbies to read the FAQ because it answers all of the FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS. Therefore, those newbies are newbies no longer and don't ask questions that we get tired of answering over and over and over... Why do you think restaurants put up signs that say "Restrooms --->?" So they don't have to show people the way every time someone has to take a piss. Same idea as a FAQ. All of what should be common info is in there, so by telling people to read the DT FAQ, we are giving them more info than they even thought they wanted. Hell, we even tell them where to go most of the time. Mark makes a very visible link to it on the DT homepage, http://www.dreamtheater.net/ For newer fans, a first time read through the FAQ would be infinitely more informative and interesting than just a reply from a frustrated veteran saying "Yes you meathead, James' real name is really Kevin." > Because given most of the the 1st experience stories ive read no one else on > here has listened to them as long as i have. Well congratulations! With that arrogant and self-righteous statement, you too have just entered the ranks of the DT elitests you were just condemning. haha > I am more than happy to tell them. The gig is in Holland and soundboard quality. Anyway, the guys play Bombay Vindaloo, only the second version I have heard other LaTM. So the track gets me thinking about the recent Kevin thread and how often he is faulted for his lack of improvisation. Well, listening to him feed off JP's haunting work on BV, there is no doubt the man is brillant and just has a sixth sense of how to compliment his bandmates. His patches just hover over everything allowing the other instruments to flow through and underneath and above. Very interesting talent. For those that saw LTE, any thoughts on Jordan's ability (well obviously it is overwhelming) to fit in sound wise? I always felt Derek was playing off in a corner while JP, MP and JM did a power trio type-thing. It's great that you found out about DT that early (hmm, lessee, I was in 3rd grade when WDADU was released), and I'm sure you've been a loyal fan, but "MY band"? You were a fan before they took off. You liked the music and you listened to it. I just think it's silly to be possessive like that. Not to open another can of worms, but for years, thousands of people were calling M*******a "their band", and look what happened. Oh, wait, didn't you post a 2-liner referring to them as "Fag Art"? My bad! ("MY" bad!) >Now, years later I see these people who have some type of elitist attitude, >about how they cannot stoop so fucking low as to tell someone new who asks >"Whats the big "M" for?" the answer without telling them that they need to >read the FAQ >Some people, believe it or not, dont even know what the fuck a FAQ is or >where you can find it!! This I understand. BUT, there is one pretty good REASON some people are annoyed by questions like this. Skadz issues an introductory e-mail to EVERY PERSON who subscribes to the jam. In this e-mail it is CLEARLY STATED that each new subscriber should READ THE FAQ before posting questions to the list. (I believe that suggestion is also in the "list guidelines" for The Mirror.) It's not incredibly difficult to follow a link. The reason I guess some people are bothered by FAQ-answerable (new word) questions is that if everyone READ the e-mail (and come on, if you're capable of posting to the list, there's no good reason ...), and READ the FAQ, there would be no need to post such questions to the list. I dunno, it doesn't usually bother me, but ya know ... just READ THE FAQ. It's not a difficult thing to do. >Not only that...but hasnt anyone noticed how many people on here do not >post? >Outside of ones who dont read it, I think some just dont want to have to >deal with smart-ass flames and complaints about their questions. 90% of the time, I read my digests in batches (4-6), and usually whenever I want to jump in on a thread, someone else does a better job of saying what I would have wanted to say. Your post was an EOJ, and I was bored. I also usually have something else I should be doing other than posting to a mailing list ... practice, schoolwork, etc. Smart-ass flames? Bring 'em on, motherfuckers!! >And if youre saying everyone else reads the FAQ....I say this >How the hell do you know if they do or not? Because THEY don't ask stupid questions! I am a brand new jammer on the web but have been a DT fan for years. From the moment I first saw PMU on MTV I went nuts. Never before had I heard such a great mix of melodies and metal. (Although I was leery about the title's message, PULL ME UNDER, and how it may be connected with JL's shirt, NAPALM DEATH. ) Anyway, I bought IAW and instantly loved it. It is a masterpiece unlike any album I had ever heard. I have probably listened to it four or five hundred times since them. MP's drumming is the most talented drummer ever (I am also a PERCUSSIONIST) and it shows on every piece, except WFS (hint). I am mesmerized by many of his intricate beats and find it very hard to keep time with him on several occasions in many songs. I am such a huge DT fan and no one I know has ever heard of them. They are the best band in the world and are the metal bad for real musicians. After some of my history (sorry if I bored anyone but I am new to this), on to the real reason for my letter. I have been reading the letters and reactions for a few days now. I find such senseless feuding about such an unimportant topic-a change in keyboardist. Yes, the Kevin stuff was awesome-Metropolis: Part I, and Scared-but Derek's was equally as impressive-New Millennium and ToT. These two shouldn't be compared to one another or how much better one album or song would have been with the other keyboardist. Has anyone thought how differently LTE's stuff would sound with Derek or Kevin? NO! No one cares because it was Jordan playing. Yes, I know some will say, "but can't we miss Kevin or Derek?" yes that's fine and acceptable but don't we listen to DT for the awesome musicianship and song writing that goes in to each song? They are unparalleled in their music. Can we please cut the controversy between K & D since the new album will be a totally new experience for everyone? Let DT continue to thrive with the following they have. Isn't this site supposed to be a medium to praise DT and their accomplishments not bash the keyboardists? Let their music live on. Praise me or bash me. I am ready. And keep on Jammin!
