Any tips are > welcome. I don't play keys (that much) but its all about economy of motion. Practice making as little movement with good technique. One milestone for me was when I wrote my own COMPLETE song that I fully enjoyed. Played it with a band over and over and over. And because it was MY song I enjoyed it enough to go home and play it some more. Same damn song again and again. All of a sudden I found I could play it very close to double speed with a great deal of clarity. So writing your own stuff is a great way to stay interested in learnig to pull something off. Also, Jordan Rudess has a new instructional video which looked pretty helpful to me. It was kind of "generally speaking" at times, but the foundations were really laid out not just for speed but quite a few aspects of musicianship. But hey, if Kevin Moore did the instructional it would have been better. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Jun 1999 00:24:46 EDT From: J C To: email_address_removed Subject: No more wire hangers....EVER!!! Message-ID: 1.I am SO with you. I'll even go as far as to say that they could have(should have?) changed the name when Kevin left. That is notto say that I think Kevin was the whole band... but that special sound that setDream Theater apart from the pack, (to me) is just not there anymore. Finally I'd like to join the group who misses good ole KevMo. 2.Two points from this little snippet here... I kinda like MP's backing vocals on the acoustic stuff. I think he's much better in a calmer setting with the backing vocals, with the more mellow songs. I too miss KevMo, but hell...Jordan should kick some serious arse. and finally 3. Ditto for me. DT seemed more like *band* when Kevin was in the band. FII doesn't feel like that to me. OIAL is good tho, very good. Awake is my fave DT album, I play it all the time and I have to say that Kevin's contributions to the disc are some of my favorite aspects of it. I didn't get into FII as much. Good, but not up to the Awake's level. But then, I'd sooner listen to FII than most of I&W, so there ya go. :o) Well.....let me start by saying that im the guy who was crucified for the top 10 list (oops!) So I gather thus far this list does not enjoy Top CDlists and KevMo arguments (whos better and such) So I form this question....is there a list that all of us can get on that would allow both of these things? Personally I like it here so Im not saying leave here just that we would have a place to post all that stuff and not piss off the jam. I understand your(old jammers)mailboxes were alwys being slammed with these things but are you forgetting that it was cool when it 1st came up as a topic? (just a question since ive only been here 8 months) ;> So how about a list called New Millenium or something that way this stuff can happen....through private mail ive gotten killer responses but i would like to see it in digest form (like album reviews and such from like-minded music lovers) And a place where everyone can feel free to post whatever they want. The reason im posting this is that I have some opinions of my own about Kev but due to all the heat ive seen from others about Kev threads i won't cuz im not healed from the last fire in my email box. And also that im afaid of being unsubbed if i talk about something that is deemed against rules of discussion. And lastly while on the subject....im 28 and just found out only recently that its against certain rules to talk about politics or religion in most bars!!?!!? I heard that while joining a discussion that didnt start there but drifted that way....the bartender said thats against the rules....so I left! I would hate to have to leave here to since ive gotten to kinda know some of you pretty good and its nice to have some friends that understand theres more to life than one form of music (DUCK!)(eMpTyV flame) Outlander _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. That is notto say And I totally disagree with this. This is a shitty example, but it's a silly strong argument that many of the half-wits on this list would not hesitate to agree with me after reading it. Bernie Taupin writes all of Elton John's lyrics. So if Bernie Taupin quit writing lyrics for Elton should Elton John have to change his name? (he already did once, but hey wtf?) The mere idea that any >established< band or personality should change their name is ludicrous. It's what people recognize them by. Say Dream Theater changes their name to "The Moist Towlettes" after Kevin left. Everyone who didn't have the inside track like we do would be like, "Hmmm... I wonder whatever happened to that Dream Theater band? They just dropped off of the face of the earth." They would have lost status, recognition, and their fanbase would have disappeared. The only time that a band should ever change their name is when they do something so absolutely embarrassing that they don't want anyone to recognize them or they don't want to be associated with their old image (which usually refers back to the latter anyway). Kev was a great songwriter and contributed to the band and all, but I don't think his contributions even come close to requesting pulling the rug out from the other members of the band. Maybe if Kevin had come up with the name of the band, I could >maybe< conceive it, but he didn't so fuck him. heheh. Anyway, if you people are still stewing over Kev's leaving the band, I think you have too much free time on your hands. :) Go buy Chromakey and be happy! -- KorgX3 just doesn't understand where people come from sometimes. The instruments are recorded GREAT! The vocals are fucked. I can't quite put my finger on what the problem is, it sounds synthetic. Whatever vocal processing was used sounds dirty, and the vocal tracks are hot in the mix. It sounds like they used excessive compression, then ran the vocal tracks through a sonic maximizer; After realizing the vocals sounded stale, they used an aural exiter to attempt to regain some warmth. IMHO, Kevin fucked it up. I'd really like to hear LaBrie's vocals dry, it makes no sense to take a good voice and butcher it with over-processing. It's not that anyone wants to take away anyone else's rights, but what would you guys do if every post I decided to cut down another DT song, long winded, and whiny? It would annoy you, and I don't care who you are or how open minded you think you are. Posts about how people miss Kevin are almost of that nature now. He's 2 keyboardists removed from DT, and a lot of you are going to forget his name once the new album comes out. It's cool if you're down about it, but there's just no reason to drag anyone else down around you. I personally prefer Derek to either of the other two. But I'm rather satisfied to have Planet X and Chromakey as well as DT. I think that it's a fair trade, considering I have no control over this band, and shouldn't hope to exert my opinions on them. > So if 20% of the state of California all of a sudden moved out, > should they change have changed their name? Just curious. I like this, but it doesn't totally gel. If DT changes it's sound to the point where it's no ;onger recognizable, then I would understand the idea of changing the band nbame. I think Iron Maiden with Blaze should be called something else. I think Metallica has NO BUSINESS with a name like that at this point. These things should be retired like a baseball number. Of course, Iron Maiden, like Michael Jordan, could have every right to reclaim their number, with Bruce back in the band! The idea of asking a band to change it's name is moronic, though. That's asking them to start all over. No one would have a right to do that or even an ethic behind which to ask a band to do that. So bleh. > From: Lisa Marie > Subject: Re: Kevin's Gone. Any > tips are welcome. I'm not a keyboardist but it strikes me that you pretty much have to do exactly what a guitarist or bassist has to do to get fast. Practice long hours, and repetetive exercises to build strength and coordination. You don't need someone else's exercises. Just play scales and arpeggios in every key, maybe one or 2 keys a day. You won't get fast unless you put in a lot of hours. You can always get Rudess's vid, but he'll probably say the same thing. Practice, and be consistent and you'll get fast. Thank you very much! I don't recall anything like that in ACOS. Metropolis uses some wacked out time sigs like that. Sometimes I wonder if they're actually pulling that kind of time sig off, or just grooving through an odd time, and then when someone writes down what they did, they can only explain it as a bizzare time sig like that.
