Whereas a review can prompt discussion that might make people go, "hey, I wanna check those guys out" a top ten just says, "I'm some random schmoe and here's what I like, which doesn't do you any good because you know nothing about these bands." -Brian ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Jun 1999 16:30:31 -0400 From: "Eric Trautmann" To: Subject: RE: New Queensryche! They played the whole thing! Zakk Wylde tearing it up on guitar, Mike Inez (now with AIC) on bass, and I forgot who the drummer was. It was damn cool. the other thing - yesterday, I got to see Def Leppard LIVE, IN CONCERT! FOR FREE! They played at a WalMart to promote their new album. They basically did a 45 minute, greatest hits set. The only thing is, the left side of the PA was screwed up, probably cause of the crossover. There were no highs, very few mids, and shitloads of low. The highs and mids would occasionally pop up for a second, but would then be gone. It was a good performance, though. It was fun hanging out with 8000 people in a parking lot. PS - Go Spurs Go! No offense to Portnoy, but Virgil is going to give Mike a run for his money in the near future. They both have completely different styles - just as Rod does on the Platypus album. But no one is going to argue that Virgil, Rod, or Mike P. can't play technical and retain the groove. I can't wait until everyone hears Planet X. One can only hope that people would move on because 1. Kevin is putting out some great music 2. The new Dream Theater album is gonna kill 3. Planet X is finally putting Derek in the light he needs to show his true abilities (dare I say Dream Theater was holding him back) 4. Platypus 2 is probably going to be as enjoyable, if not more than the first one. 5. LTE2 has some amazing songs that make LTE1 seem like it was only half as good :oP 6. James LaBrie's solo album will finally put James in a different environment that will show him singing different phrasing than previous DT (considering the guys that write the lyrics/melody to DT songs aren't in Mulmuzzler) How the hell can you complain with all this great music coming out? I love Derek's music and contributions to Dream Theater but I'm not going to dwell on how the new DT would have been with Derek. If I miss Derek, I'm gonna throw on Planet X. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 09 Jun 1999 15:06:51 PDT From: Partha Mukhopadhyay To: email_address_removed Subject: top tens from here to eternity Message-ID: Good flick, FHTE, Burt Lancaster, Monty Clift and Frank (no last name needed)........ but i digress >> --- email_address_removed wrote: >>By some dumb rule, we're prohibited from doing this >>on the jam. >I can understand it too, not everyone wants to read it, but everyone >posts >album reviews to the jam and everyone mentions a certain CD >that is worth >buying. A top 10 list, by its very simplicity invites thousands of copycats (well, hundreds, anyway, seeing as how this list's membership is around a thousand).....and we've seen top ten/five/whatever mania sweep this space far more often than is tolerable..... I'm guessing you haven't been on the list too long, because whatever top ten list you'd like to come up with, it's already been done....and somebody with too much time probably has the results tabulated and sitting on a web site somewhere (itchy? anybody else?) for easy perusal....... partha _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. You don't advocate it, then you do. Interesting. In any event, the man asked for a list of our top favorite albums if memory serves. I can name a shitload more albums that I like, but I can probably count the people care about that on one finger. There's a time and a place for top X lists and I must agree with Skadz-- it ain't the list. === *Trent "They said that timing was everything, made him want to be everywhere, there's a lot to be said for nowhere." * Eddie Vedder, a man amongst men and all around cool guy _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? If someone posts something like: "I'm looking for something new, I enjoy bandA, bandB, bandC... can someone suggest something I might like?"... people could actually answer in private email. Asking for everyone to post their top 10 list, is clearly against the rules. It's much more valuable (and within the list guidelines), when someone offers to collect the votes themselves (like Brian Hansen did last year), and only posts the results. Btw, the results of Brian's poll can still be found on UACM ... the link is in the left frame. -- Lisa Marie "Jessie" email_address_removed ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Jun 1999 21:25:05 EDT From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: Space-Dye Vest Message-ID: I was just listening to Kevin Moores good-bye-song, Space-Dye Vest, and stopped to notice the lyrics: 'Never come near me again \ Do you really think I need you' Were the feelings between KM and DT really like that??? Doing something like "top 10 best" is basically the same thing in >condensed form. The above post is exactly why i went ahead and tried. See like i said im planning on spending about 900 bucks and i thought (thats what i get for thinking)...that since theres not much DTC right now and people are always throwing out new cd titles that it would be quick and over with so that i make a clean sweep and have the music "i need" (in the jams opinion). Also so I could join discussions about bands and shows that for now im totally in the dark about. However, those who pointed out that its against the rules, were really cool about it. And i didnt read the entry letter or whatever because this is my first list and DT is IT!...so i wanted to jump right in. I did not realize that it would inspire flames....i figured that a few of you would throw a quick list and that would be that. Oh well...could those of you who were going to send those lists to email_address_removed ? I would appreciate it much since my cash is here tomorrow ;> getting tons and tons of new cds that are....well you know...kickass is one of the pleasures i cherish most. Its right up there with sex/cold beer/a killer S470 w/near perfect intonation and the moment a new original takes me and leads me out to the outro! ;> Oh yea! and DT live in the first 8 rows! Again sorry...hope i didnt disrupt anyones daily jam Outlander _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. Now THIS is what I like to see. That's a very mature way to look at it, and a great way to see this list in the first responses to your posts. Thanks for being so understanding of the rules (I'm being sincere here, too). > Oh well...could those of you who were going to send those lists to > email_address_removed ? And THAT'S a great way to respond. Way to go! DTC: I just received LTE in the mail and I only have ONE complaint: It's too SHORT! Does anybody else agree here? It's like the whole album seems to go for entirely too little time. I'm not really including the three minute warning here, though - I consider that to be a cool jam, but not really a song; I only like to listen to that every now and then, maybe every third listening to the album because it's tough to sit through the whole thing and try to absorb everything. Other than that, the whole thing seems just entirely too short.
