Somewhere between 2 and 3 hours... just incredible. What an amazing stage presence... these guys were just the greatest. Starting to make me think that I'm wasting time working on chops... wild. If you don't like Spocks, go to one of these shows, and you WILL be converted. Hand Farm opened, with an exceptional set. Scott is a cool mother hey, I'm talking about Shaft. Great guitarist. Sounds like a cross between Holdsworth and Shawn Lane. Much more picking than Holdsworth, much smoother sounding than Lane. Equally bombastic and fusion drenched. He says he draws a lot of influence from guys like McCoy Tyner, Trane and the like. Super nice guy. The 2 best drum solos I've witnessed this year were last night. Vic Stevens did what HAD to be double stroke rolls with his feet, and Nick from Spocks played an incredible MUSICAL drum solo. Awesome. A great time was had by all. This is the best concert I have ever seen, and I'm seeing it again on Monday. This is gonna be like 7 cds worth of material. :) -- Chris Ptacek - email_address_removed "Everything that can be invented has been invented." -- Charles H. The two best programs for what you're talking about (it's generally referred to as "time stretch") are Cool Edit and Sound Forge. You can find them on warez or get by with demo copies, or spend way too much money on them. > From: Rick Audet > Subject: Re: Dali's Dilemma today! > > You will be very pleased!! > > > > My only comment--and maybe someone (not you Ptacek!!) knows... > > I was reading the liners this weekend and noticed there is no mastering > > credit anywhere. I have your cd anyways. :) > What "finishing touch" is it missing? I agree with Trevin. The mix gets very squirrelie at times. Sometimes the vocals are too quiet, most of the time the hi hats are WAY too quiet... and Matt's awesome piano piece is most assuredly too quiet. The first two are an engineering issue. The last is a mastering issue, in that they should have (to some minor extent) normalized the volumes of the tracks across the board. Not to remove dynamics, but to make it so you don't have unnecessary eardrum bludgeoning. The piano thing is so soft and quiet, and the tune that follows is just too loud in comparison to make it a good transition, IMO. Musically, I love this stuff. It's not what I want to do with myself anymore (I want to be Spocks Beard and Tribal tech and Jason Becker and Ron Thal more than I want to be Dream Theater. :) but it is bad ass. Guillory does a LOT of Blues Saraceno inspired chops (I have no idea why... I mean... what would make the guy do that?1?) mixed with some blurring fingerwork. My favorite keyboardist on the market. Getchoself some. > The album was mastered at Prarie Sun Studios, by the way. If _I_ master it at Prarie Sun it will STILL SUCK. A good audio team working with a PC and Sound Forge will out do a half assed half trained monkey any day. Not that I think the mastering is really even that bad... I mean, I don't think I could have done better, but I do think I would have changed the piano track volume... > From: "Al @ Switchcraft" > Subject: Re:EQ and Tone and stuff > >[ I'm inclined to think that this is audiophile elitism hogwash. :) Al, > > Your inclination is wrong. The distortion introduced through consumer > grade equalization components is MEASURABLE with instrumentation. > Anyone that argues with me on this topic could be characterized as > someone that simply doesn't want their religion tainted by fact. You misunderstand, captain audio. For those of us who simply can not or choose not to spend a large fortune on our stereos (I'm about to buy a $3000 amp head and $4000 worth or recording gear... my money has other plans for its life) how can you argue that our ears are just wrong? I think you're taking all of this and turning it into "Al and everyone who studies the factual, scientific side of audio reproduction is wrong, and we're right... our boom boxes are the best sound you can get." When you have a very limited weak quality stereo, if messing with the eq makes it sound better to you, then what is wrong with that? Why take that to mean that it's a better solution than having the ultimate rig? > To paraphrase you, Chris: "You're being a dick." No, I'm not. I'm being totally serious. The point was exaggerated, and you really need not take it so seriously. > NO you can't get great sound for $300.00. But to suggest it takes $30,000.00 > to acquire something sonically pleasing is absurd. If throwing money > to the wind is your bag, you could spend 30 grand on JUST the CD player. > In reality, it takes about 10,000.00 to build a GOOD conservative > "audiophile" system with separate components of extraordinary quality. > This would include CD, tuner and cassette source components. You don't seem to understand that to some people here, maybe even myself included, that will never be a realizable goal. $10,000 for a stereo, even if you build slowly, may not be logical for some people, who just want to hear background music. I think one day I will work toward that goal, but instead of pretending that anyone is arguing that a $12 radio is better than a $4,000 receiver, recognize that most people here are totally content with factory car stereos, stock computer speakers, and a stereo system that comes as a tape, cd, tuner and receiver all in one, with a name like Sanyo or Aiwa. > Exact is impossible. However... close is tangible. You know what I mean, cheese tits. :) All this in mind, I DO want the best possible sound. I just can't afford it yet. I will be able to, because I know my GF would like a good stereo too, and she knows something about sound (though her stereo isn't fit for my dog's anal drippings). One day we'll have a bitchin' setup. You just have more dedication to that goal than we do right now. It's clearly a major love in your life. I am very note driven, and phrase driven. I'm not so frequency driven. Hearing a "decent" reproduction of the shound I want to hear is plenty good enough for me. How can you STAND listening to music in a car though? With your tastes, I'd think you drive around with headphones on. > >[- Chris > >[-Who just got the K&N air filter for his Avenger, more than a year after Al > >[told him what could be done to beef up his car > > Well???? Does it pull harder and sound more authoritative? Yes and sort of. I may change the muffler to get a lower sound. It's never gonna take out a "Five Point Slow" (5.0) seeing as it's already beat up and it's an automatic. I was a kid. What did I know? > BTW, what did that Avenger set you back? I'll bet more than 10 grand. :) :) More than it's worth... though it's lasted 125,000 miles (in less than 4 years) so far. > /Al sticks fork into Ptaceks steaming carcass. "Yup, he's done" My carcass may be done, but my thumb is still twitching and my venom can still hit you square in the eyes from across the room, bitch! Message-ID: To whom it may and/or may not concern, I have been reading the "E.Q. Feud" for sometime now... Is anyone keeping score? Is their a home favorite? What's with that purple tubby-kat? I think that I speak for the majority of the readers when I say that Dream Theater is an incredible band. We thoroughly enjoy listening to their music. Do we have to have a $10,000 stereo system to do that? I tape the DT CD's I own, and I listen to the tapes when I go running, or when I am in the gym. You know what, through headphones (approximately valued at $10) played on a "walkman" (actually a no-name $20 portable tape player), I still get to appreciate the music, and ultimately enjoy it. That is not to say that I would frown on owning a ten thousand dollar stereo system, but in all honesty for one to enjoy their favorite music, the "price of admission" doesn't have to be so far up there. Now, it has been stated before, you definitely know you stuff. Oh, and by the way, talking over us with the octaves and what not, at best, it is probably unappreciated. Granted, my stereo system does not pick up Portnoy breathing hard near the end of ACOS, but, it will suffice. Estimated cost of "walkman" with headphones, DT CD, and a tape it was recorded on, approximately $50. Appreciation and listening enjoyment... Without end! Value of my 2 cents, questionable... :) The Reverend Forbidden Godflesh NOTE: Not to be mistaken with "Foreboding Goldfish" _____________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Shit, I do. Especially after hearing the "full" version that they played live on the I&W tour (listen to the 3-4 minutes of "extra song" on the Dance of Eternity bootleg, for example). Even though it is sort of a straight forward jam, I like it. Knowing how the song should have ended, had it not been "Praternized", I cant seem to listen to I&W without getting that "blue-balled" feeling. ...... no comments from the amateur comedians out there ....... Anyhow, MP does have a version of LtL without the lame faded ending. And supposedly, a great drum fill is in there as well. Since they are in the process of finalizing the new record, I would like to propose that the full LtL makes it as filler on a CD single or Japanese bonus track or maybe part of the 1999 Christmas Present to the fanclub.
