The tones are= incredible, and the whole unit is just soooo clean sounding. However, yo= u mention that you love JP's tone, and I have to tell you, the VooduValve s= eems more geared toward Marshall tones, IMHO. But that's my preference of ton= e, as well, which is why I bought it. My only complaint about the unit is the = user interface is kind of tricky for going in and making your own sounds. Onc= e you get used to it, it's okay. You also mention that you have a solid state amplifier, and I'm not sure if you mean guitar amplifier or a power ampli= fier. The optimal way to run a VooduValve is into a power amp. You can use it = as a pre-guitar amp effects unit, but it probably won't sound as good as it wo= uld the other way. Definitely test it with your set-up before buying... ANother suggestion - The Flextone Line 6 amp series. These are very cool= products, and you can get a great sounding complete amp setup (speakers a= nd footswitch) for about what you would pay for a VooduValve. While the Lin= e 6 is not as flexible as the VV, it is way simpler to use, and the tones are awesome. Also, one of the amp models it simulates quite well is a Rectif= ied amp, which will get you close to JP's sound. Just remember, there's a re= ason why JP has all the equipment he does, and the only real way to get exactl= y his tone would be to have his setup, ampd, guitars, speakers, cables, etc. B= ut this can get you close, for an affordable price. I think that's all. ANy questions, feel free to email me... Paul= ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 May 1999 12:39:06 From: "Paul Evans" To: Subject: Speakers and such... Message-ID: LSUA.26861.464da Hey Al, pardon my ignorance, but your point seems to be that the best way to hear= music is in it's purest form, thru a flat system. Chris Ptacek wrote: >[ I'm inclined to think that this is audiophile elitism hogwash. :) Al, Your inclination is wrong. The distortion introduced through consumer grade equalization components is MEASURABLE with instrumentation. Cheap consumer grade EQs use piss poor, noisy Op-amps that alone can butcher something as simple as a sine wave. Plus, in the interest of maximizing profit, they habitually use electrolytic capacitors in the signal path. Electrolytic caps are the most unstable, non-linear devices known to man when they are used in audio applications. These sonic shortcomings ARE audible. NO you can't get great sound for $300.00. But to suggest it takes $30,000.00 to acquire something sonically pleasing is absurd. If throwing money to the wind is your bag, you could spend 30 grand on JUST the CD player. In reality, it takes about 10,000.00 to build a GOOD conservative "audiophile" system with separate components of extraordinary quality. This would include CD, tuner and cassette source components. The speakers alone would be responsible for close to 50% of the total system cost. If your conviction and passion for music is that strong, you can justify your investment. As far as YOU tweaking your EQ to suit your taste: As a musician, you have a much better grasp on how things should sound. Your adjustments may be more beneficial due to your trained ear. The FACT still remains, you are compensating for equipment and room deficiencies, and doing it with equipment manufactured by companies that ignore the concept of maintaining signal purity. Improper speaker placement and room acoustical properties have a great deal of influence on the final presentation. Both of these conditions can be addressed without a large monetary sacrifice. It's the lack of knowledge in these areas that are plaguing the average listener, not the cost of admission. >[and eq settings and decide on what he or she likes. >[Think about your statement if applied to guitar amps. Tone is a matter >[of taste, not necessarily a flat standard... or wouldn't you ditch your Thank you for reinforcing my point. You, the guitar player, are the SOURCE; That's how you, THE MUSICIAN, convey what you want the listener to hear. It's the job of the recording engineer, the playback equipment, and the person at the controls of the playback gear to see that the music is reproduced as the ARTIST intended. Think of it like this: Some dude jumps up on stage and starts tweaking your rack to suit his own taste. Not only would it piss you off, but the listener has completely ignored the fact that that's how it's intended to sound as expressed by the creator. I remember my Godmother commenting on her old 1960's vintage Sears console stereo. The thing was a pile of garbage and sounded like a glorified Close-N-Play. It even had the dreaded nickel-taped-to-tonearm-syndrome. Her exact words were: "Oh, it has beautiful sound." This statement clearly demonstrated her lack of exposure to quality sound. therefore, she simply doesn't know any better. Unfortunately, she's in the majority on this one... >[speakers and amp for some high end studio monitors to get the EXACT sound of >[the recording? Exact is impossible.
