Message-ID: <000c01be9280$1ceb3b80$046400c0@oemcomputer> Well, I think Break is pretty mellow compared to the other Enchant CDs. I'd personally recommend either "A Blueprint Of The World" or "Time Lost". The second one is songs that were left off the band's first two CDs, and often the songs on here are just as good (or better) than the ones they ended up using. My opinion of the band is that they're one of my favorites. I like all their CDs, though I'd love to see a remaster of the first one, as the production could be better. They are also an awesome live band. I recommend all their CDs, though I wouldn't start out with Break. Hope this was helpful. It's very mature compared to their last three releases. If you like something heavier than Surrounded on Break, though, Wounded is the heaviest of their albums. It is more guitar oriented. And ABotW is their most proggish. Break is just a great mature album that, to me, feels as refreshing as listening to any Rush album, like Roll the Bones or Hold Your Fire. Anyway, that's my take on it. -- KorgX3 reprograms his socks. POWER OF OMENS I have had a tape of theirs for over a year. Now if your looking for a band that plays like Dream Theater and has Geoff Tate singing, THIS is the band for you... I figured some of you would like to know: Jordan Rudess and Rod Morgenstein are performing a keyboard and drum clinic at the Schenectady, NY Ramada Inn on Wednesday, May 26 at 7:00 PM. Free Admission! Sponsored by Drome Sound. WooHoo!! Like the Taco Bell dog sez, "I am there!!" :-) I also can't WAIT until the JP/MP clinic in Colonie, NY on May 18. Damn, the area hasn't seen the band as a whole since 1993, but the dudes sure like coming upstate here for clinics! I've already seen JP and MP separately a few years back, and then I saw MP again in Colonie a little while back. In regards to the QR issue, I don't think that Q2K is all that bad of a title, personally. I rather like it. I just hope the album as a whole is better than HITNF. Although, in a live setting, I really came to appreciate a few of the tunes off of their last album to the point where I really like them a lot (like The Voice Inside, You, Reach, Some People Fly). Plus there were a couple I always liked a lot that they didn't play on tour like Cuckoo's Nest and Sp00l. Unfortunately, I thought the rest of the album was really weak, with a couple of tunes being absolute duds. The review of the new album has me very optimistic however, and QR has always been one of my alltime faves, so we'll see. Just my 2 cents anyway... Back to lurk mode I go... Message-ID: I fucked up... I'm really sorry for jumping down Toneadd9's throat. I've been more than a little confrontational the last few days and managed to let it carry over to the Jam. I was in the wrong mood when I read and replied to that post. (No excuse, I know) For those of you that did not see the original post on my speaker project, I'll do my best to keep the explanation brief. A few months back I decided to start building another very high quality set of speakers. The original plan was to build the woofer/sub woofer in one cabinet, and the midrange and tweeter in another. Now that they are up and running, the plan has changed. I'm so impressed with their performance that I've now chosen to incorporate them in my main speaker array and put the JBL Pro 12's out to pasture. Actually, I'll probably build a set of speakers for my son using the JBL drivers. If you have not been to my site since 5:00 AM CDT 4-29-99 you have not seen the latest updates and project plans. A project like this is very time consuming, but the rewards are priceless! Not only is it fun and rewarding, but you can build a set of high-end speakers for a fraction of the cost of the multi-thousand dollar commercial high-end products. Those of you that have looked at the pics on my site can clearly see these are in a different class than the mass produced consumer electronics shit sold at the home audio superstores. Any one that has ever taken apart a speaker can appreciate the tremendous difference in materials and construction. Plus, It's a great feeling to be able to say to the awestruck guests: "Yup, I built them myself" I wholeheartedly apologize to Toneadd9, and the rest of the Jammers for my unwarranted ranting. And for those of you that are legitimately interested in this project, here's the recently updated page link: http://www.isd.net/astrosch/project.html /Al will be busy soaking his head in walrus snot... -- Al - The Ytse-ProGtologist ^ Switchcraft Microsystems ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "It's supposed to pack an awesome buzz" --Butthead ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Apr 1999 03:49:02 -0500 From: "Al @ Switchcraft" To: retaehT maerD Subject: KorgXXX Message-ID: OK, I'm done soaking my head. I LOVE music, I have since I was a little kid. I started working part-time at a private recording studio when I was 14 years old. Once you've been exposed to high quality playback gear, it's hard to go back to a "normal" system. Here's how I justify spending the big coin: Say you buy a new car for $15,000.00 - $25,000.00, where is it 15 years later? It's either in the scrap yard, or some kid is driving it around on the donut spare. Now add up the costs of fuel, maintenance and insurance over a 15 year period. A car is a fucking liability. High-end audio gear retains at least 50% of it's value over a ten year period. Considering the immense reliability of quality gear, chances are the only other expense will be the electricity to power the gear. One of my amps is an old Hafler DH-500 I purchased back in 1984! It's still worth damn near what I paid for it back then. In contrast, my dad has been through three new trucks since 84, each time trading the old one in for a fraction of the purchase price. Stupid, IMHO. Sure we all need a reliable car, but C'mon! I'm more likely to get a clean, well maintained used car some other dork took a major loss on when he/she traded it off for a new one. With proper care and exercising a little home-brew maintenance, it should last for years before you have to take advantage of another dork trading in his/her car. BTW, the licensing and insurance is much cheaper on an older vehicle. With this in mind, am I still nuts? I think not. If you bring in the information on the equipment value both new and used, most finance companies have no problem using the gear itself as collateral to secure the loan. For their purposes, the audio gear is more security because it retains it's value better than a car. However, if your credit is questionable they may be reluctant due to the difficulty of repossession. If you want to see a little sample of what's out there for the buck, I'm placing a zipped Word97 document at the bottom of my music page. The doc file has prices of a nice system with imbedded pictures of the gear. Certainly there are more options, but I thought this system was the best value. Message-ID: Hey folks, After years of shunning my toy Ibanez RG270 for a Les Paul, I've decided it's finally time to upgrade. So here's the deal: I've got 500 quid, so I can either get an RG470, and replace the pickups with a couple of nice DiMarzios, or get an RG507 and keep the stock pickups until I can afford another stlg100-or-so. So my question is: the whiney bar. The 470 has a lo-TRS trem, while the 507 has - I think - the lo-pro Edge. Is the 507 worth the extra money just for the trem, or is the lo-TRS perfectly good (bear in mind I'm used to a Les Paul, and thus the trem doesn't have to take Vai levels of abuse, although it would be cool). Any help anyone can offer is muchly appreciated.
