If the production had been as clear >and pristine as Empire's and Promised Land's, I think it would have kicked >ass. Don't knock Promised Land with me around, though. It's my fave CD of >theirs. :) I don't know. I remember for the 'Frontier' tour(can't believe it was almost two years ago!), the songs pretty much blew in the live environment, also. It's my opinion that there is one really kickass song, which is You(listening to it right now - it really is good), and one or two barely-half decent songs, like Get A Life. The rest are really disappointing, and all i can say for them is that if I heard them on the radio, I would be pleasently surprised, because even a shitty QR song is pretty good. However, I feel that the album is a huge step down. Promised Land I was maybe a little hard on; I suppose that was a transition album, and takes a little getting used to. It's my third favorite - I like it more than Empire and less than Rage or Mindcrime. Andrew postulated: >Question: have you gone to their website to listen to clips of their new >album? I'm assuming not. Also, the review I heard, and agree with, is that >it has some Mindcrime feel to it. Well, shit, I didn't know there were clips! I will listen to those right now and get back to ya. Mindcrime feel, hey, that can't hurt. You know, it IS possible for metal bands to STAY metal bands and still be really good, and even get better! Two examples: Savatage and Megadeth. Both of their latest releases are excellent, especially The Wake Of Magellan, which I feel is Savatage's best work ever. And they did not at all lessen their metal-ness. As crunchy as ever! Sorry Rick, but you have been outvoted...I think I will give this CD a shot :) As far as Symphony X goes, these guys are easily my second favorite band, after DT of course. They just absolutely shread, write beautiful and intricate music, and never get tiring. The Divine Wings of Tragedy is their best, followed closely by The Damnation Game. But get both. You will thank us later. Thanks everyone for the advice again. I thought this was a MUSIC related mailing list. Considering I'm placing the plans to build these on my page, I thought some people here might be interested in building some for themselves, or at least seeing how it's done. Oh, we can talk about CD players, CDR burners and portable playback gear, but bring up the plans to build some incredible low frequency loudspeakers and you spit a gasket. I wound up at UACM. For those who don't know there's a petition to get Headbanger's Ball back on to MTV. The petition tries to make a win-win proposition in which MTV can ride the wave of a renewed/underground interest in metal. The authors say that metal is very much alive and widely enjoyed. What I'm curious to know is...do all y'all metal fans feel that we even need HB Ball back? Assuming that metal is making a big comeback, do we even care if MTV gets a piece of the pie? Do we care if they survive when metal comes and kicks the Backstreet Boys' asses off the charts? Personally, I don't give a s&)t. Let MTV rot and die. Now for the tangential DTC: One nice thing would be that we might get some DT on TV. Sure, that might lead to bigger sales for OFB. That might lead to DT being able to do some nice things like put out DVDs for us, because Elektra would be more interested in such an investment. OFB might make a few extra bucks; I'd be all for that. It's just that my hatred of MTV is so great that I would rather see MTV die than benefit from any groundswell of metal love. I just wish that DT made more money for Elektra so that we could have things like live DT DVD or whatever (I bet MP would dig that.). I guess I can't have my cake and eat it too. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Apr 1999 08:51:47 -0500 From: "Brian Hayden" To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: Blow me Message-ID: Responding to the message of from email_address_removed: > |what is this about? please private mail to avoid clutter on the jam > |thanx > |t > Oh, we can talk about CD players, CDR burners and portable playback gear, > but bring up the plans to build some incredible low frequency loudspeakers > and > you spit a gasket. These same people always are usually the first to remark on how great it is to be fan of such a little known band. It seems as if these people (not a few of which are on this list) want to have their favorite bands recieve massive amounts of MTV and radio coverage but still retain their cultish following. It can't go both ways people. === = *Trent "I see a girl in the night with a baby in her hand. Under an old street light; near a garbage can. Now she's put the kid away, she's gone to get a hit.
