Message-ID: Great news for Chroma Key fans: A Chroma Key demos album, entitled "This Is A Recording (demos 1995-97)" will be released on May 26th, 1999... The album will contain 15 tracks and includes all the lyrics. Kevin Moore will begin taking pre-orders in about week but the artwork and tracklisting are already available on the site: http://www.chromakey.com/?ytse Mark Bredius email_address_removed http://www.chromakey.com/?ytse ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Apr 1999 14:45 -0800 From: "Rahul Ananda" To: "email_address_removed" Subject: ELP Message-ID: A good starting point for ELP, in my opinion, is either Brain Salad Surgery or Tarkus. The keyboard sounds are _very_ dated, but the performances are top-notch. Tarkus opens with the title track, which if I recall correctly, is about 20 minutes long. This is the real winner of the album, as the shorter songs are bit more mundane by comparison. I'm still not quite sure what the song is actually about though... the music is so amazing that I don't think I've ever paid too much attention to the lyrics. Brain Salad Surgery contains the magnificent Karn Evil 9 Impressions I-III. This is the first thing by ELP I'd ever heard (or by any keyboard-driven prog band for that matter) and it was the catalyst of all my future purchases. I haven't listened to ELP in quite a while so I don't even remember the names of the other songs on those albums. STAY AWAY FROM LOVE BEACH. Just look at the cover and you'll know why. :) It is a fair indication of what is contained therein. Lastly, Carl Palmer is one HELL of a drummer. His live stuff on the Return of the Manticore boxed set (is that the correct title?) will burn you alive. Everyone thinks I'm Indian.... :) -Rahul Ananda- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Apr 1999 00:21 +0200 From: email_address_removed.SE To: email_address_removed Subject: Power of Omens - Eyes of the Oracle Message-ID: --- Inkommet fr=E5n INFODATA.SVA0193 +46 670 160 60 99-04-28 00.21 POWER OF OMENS - Eyes of the Oracle USA Rating: * * * * =BD June 1998 ELEVATE ER02004 Total time: 72:26 The musicians: David Gallegos: Guitars & All Electronics Alex Arellano: Drums & Percussion Chris Salinas: Vocals Matt Williamson: bass This debut album from Power of Omens has to be one of the most technical albums ever in the Progressive Metal genre. The music is very extremely intricate and complex. They are stretching the boundaries of progressive metal to its outer limits. Power Of Omens influences are Queensryche, Dream Theater, Iron Maiden, Shadow Gallery, Fates Warning and Rush, and you can hear it very clearly in their music. The powerful singer Chris Salinas is almost a copy of Queensr=FFche's Geoff Tate. Actually it's hard to tell the difference. The musicians are outstanding (the fact that such brilliant musicians found each other is amazing), and Power of Omens are one of the best new Prog Metal bands from USA. Sometimes it's almost too much going on, with thousands of beats at once, and constantly changing time signatures, making the music very inaccessible. The only things that are missing here are some memorable choruses. This is what separates them from, for example Dream Theater. Dream Theater is among the best Prog Metal musicians today, but they also got the ability to write memorable songs. Power Of Omens should have thought more about that instead of just trying to get it as complex as possible. But after all you could say that this is Power of Omens trademark. To make music for those who like technical skills above all. And you can't find a more appropriate band if that's the case, but they sure wont make any big money on their music. But after all, money isn't everything! The songs range from 5 to 20 minutes. It isn't easy to pick out any highlights on a record like this, so I wont. But I have to mention "Test of Wills", which is a 19:55 minute masterpiece that have to be one of the best Prog Metal tunes ever written. It's divided into four pieces, and I love the Spanish guitar on part II "A Struggle Within". Power of Omens brilliant progressive music will surely find it's way to the heart of every fan of high technical progressive metal. This must be the best debut album in 1998 and one of the best Prog Metal releases ever. What you have here is a masterpiece and a milestone in progressive metal. Highly recommended! Rumors are saying that they have another album in the making, and it's gonna be different compared to "Eyes Of The Oracle". I think that if the new album have got some more hooks, that album will be their breakthrough. No doubt about it! A record to look forward to. STP is ALREADY back together finishing a new album and they ALREADY played their first "reunion" show at the Viper Room. As for AIC, they got together recently and completed a couple new tracks for a box set coming out, but Layne isn't quite up to doing a full album/tour yet. FYI- AIC NEVER broke up. - JK ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Apr 1999 19:42:20 EDT From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: STP/AIC Message-ID: In a message dated 99-04-27 15:25:13 EDT, you write: << << You must have your bands confused... that is Stone Temple Pilots that is still together and waiting for Scott Weiland to get his shit together and ditch the heroine. Alice's product manager at Columbia Records (who I spoke with last week) told me they are definitely still a band. A highlights (from their box set) cd is coming out in June and the box set will be out in Fall. Unreleased tracks and all. -Kyle >> I just wanted to point out the fact that you started your message by saying "You are correct sir" and totally stated the opposite yourself. For example, how can STP be waiting for Scott W. to get his act together if they're already recording/performing? And how did AIC definitely "break up" if they're "definitely still a band"? Last year it didn't work out too well, but I wanna try it again this year. This time I want people who will be a little more devoted to it...not spending ever waking hour on it, but spending some time every other day or so. This year we will work on one song at a time instead of a bunch of people doing different songs. And most likely we will be tabbing it in text format unless someone knows a good tabbing software that is easy on the eyes to read. Guitarists are also welcome to help. And Mark said he wouldn't mind having the tabs posted on his site, but if someone wants to make their own site devoted to John Myung and the bass tabs for the music of Dream Theater then that would be cool too. Ehmmm, its my first time to write something here=D6 But you mentioned ELP; so I guess that this is YOUR responsibillity=D6:-) Albums? I highly recommend "The Brain Salad Surgery"(The title still sounds cool, even in these dark days...); "Tarkus" (A kind of those "concept" album; lot of those "musically crazy" stuff; "Karn Evil 9" is from this album); "Trilogy"(Check out those "Endless Enigma" thing! "The Sheriff" is from this album); "Works" also good, but these are a double cd pack, so I think this is when you decided that you are totally crazy about these guys. Another one that interesting is "Piano Concerto"; also a lot of their live albums ("In Concert", "Live 1 & Live 2", "Welcome Back My Friend in The Show that Never End" etc). If you like the "musically crazy" improv. especially on the piano & keyboards, I recommend you to take their live albums. But one thing for sure, I'm not recommended any album from their release in the '90s; believe me, they sucks! Big time! But the live album they made in 1993 ( Live At The Royal Albert Hall) is good though lack of certain "old sounds". . . . >How "old" do the original ELP albums sound? You like Spock's Beard? So nothing is "old" about ELP sounds; they're just "legendary crazees"! ^_^ BTW, why do I have this odd feelings of "Gentle Giant" when I listened to "SB"? np. "Q2K" ???? It sounds like the title to some bogus soundtrack, sold by the candy bars at Walmart, brought to you by the people that marketed all the Y2K slogans. Maybe they could call it Queensryche Dance/Jock Mix '99. Not to mention, when you hear phrases like "This album will be refreshing and different", that tends to mean, "This album will suck because we are out of ideas." I have a hunch the only "refreshingly different" thing will be the refreshingly different "lack of talent" on this album, except it won't be at all "refreshing", because their last album was a "total piece of crap", and the Promised Land had a few amazing songs, but most of that album marks their descent into "suckdom".
