Message-ID: <004601be8ed6$a2fd3000$530d84d0@default> Heh. The worst gig I ever had was at the profound meetingplace of partygoers in the area called "The Tree." Albeit there is no tree at the damn place so I have no idea why it's called such. Anyway, we were the second band to play. We were told that everything was to be provided: lights, mixing board, generator, beer, etc. so we made the mistake (it was our first gig) of saying "ah, OK, we get to pack light for this trip." We get there. There's one small, cramped trailerbed for a stage and the first band is already up and playing. Some band called Blender playing porn music. Not bad for this area (in other words, they sucked). We look around. Yay, no lights, no mixing board, no soundperson, and a generator that I'd heard was almost out of gas and took 20 minutes to start. Hell, at least there was beer! Blender, incidentally was booed off of the stage, beaten, and gangraped by a strange mob of people in Slayer T-shirts. So, the Sun had set and there was absolutely no light for us to heave Blender's shit from the stage and set up our own. It was taking too long and the crowd was growing restless. Matt had to wheel his dad's van around and shine the headlights on the stage so we could see. Some helpful people held their lighters up for us. Didn't help much. The Slayer mob was lurking in the shadows of the stage, fangs dripping poison and all that. I'm getting drunk and stoned and whatever else I can. Come to find the damn bass amp I'd rented didn't even work so I had to plug into a piece of shit little Rock Town amp. Just as the Slayer mob was writhing its way up onto the stage, Jeremiah was able to get the opening strains of Threat of Death out and introduced us (Wasted Angel) to the disgruntled crowd. We tried as best we could to get through our setlist. Threat of Death, I Feel, The Door That Sets them Free (the ballad did NOT go over well), Alone... All this time we couldn't hear what we were playing. I swear the rattling generator was louder than we were. I'm standing under the bass drum playing through this Gorilla Amp copy hoping that it's even on cuz I can't hear shit. Then during Symphony of Destruction Jeremiah starts harping on how the hell he got stuck in such a shitty band over the mic and that we suck and shit. Matt barely missed lobotomizing him with a drumstick at that point. We finished our gig with Setting Sun, our only good song that rocked the house and redeemed our shitty performance. Appeased, the Slayer mob grunted and only made off with Jeremiah, who was aptly out of the band anyway, so none of us gave a damn and Beau hoped he got knocked up. I could care less, I was fuckin' baked. Stumbling around that night I lost my keys in the field somewhere. My car was locked so I was stranded in buttville and had to break into my house for the spare. By the time we got back, the cops had busted the place. I snuck in to my car, got drug searched (thankfully, I was a bit sobered up by that time and there was no anal probing), got questioned about my foot long survival knife and baseball bat, and almost got mobbed by a 300 pound sweaty crack whore. All in all, I look back on the night with a smirk for some reason, even though it was one of the most demoralizing, shittiest nights of my life. And I just thought I'd share it with you all. :) -- KorgX3 teaches his furby, "Doo-doo," how to sing Lines in the Sand. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Apr 1999 01:08:02 EDT From: "J C" To: email_address_removed Subject: A new Thread Message-ID: Gig from hell huh?? thats easy... our band opened up for "Nitro" ya know Jim Gilette and Micheal Angelo? there was supposed to be a very large turnout for this so our band went into multiple extended practice sessions where we defined every aspect of every part and went to the show feeling unstoppable. When we got there for soundcheck we had to have a crew move some of Nitros gear and his patented 4-neck X-wing guitar was stacshed behind an amp. During our first song everything was perfect and just as we slipped into our niche some mexican dude grabbed Mikes axe and ran...the bar went berserk trying to stop the guy and most went outside to see what was going on once they had him cornered. And due to our short set and the clamor over the incident they completely missed one of the best performances the band had ever given. I was basically pissed and was pleasently surprised by the fact that once the owner and i started fighting over our pay here come the bouncers all pumped up from the guitar snatching thing. Voices were raised and things elevated until two of them grabbed me and shoved me out the door where both of my palms met gravel and concrete. I couldnt play for 2 weeks....which caused us to miss three more gigs Overall it cost me 500......I know "lifes not fair" and "everybody has it hard" but to go through all of this while suffering the normal musician trouble ....not eating.....not sleeping and no money for anything unless its more gear for the me or the band.....FUCKKKKK!!!!! Funny, something very similar to this happened to me once. A few of my friends and I got this funk band together to play for an event in my town. Three of the guys in the group (drummer, bassist, guitarist) were in a prog band playing a set after us. The show went badly (mainly because the drummer decided he was better than the rest of us and improved the whole thing). After our set was over, the drummer walked out into the crowd and said: "Now you get to hear a REAL band play". Needless to say, I now associate with other drummers. I rushed out to buy the original when it came out 25 years ago, and it rapidly became one of my favourite disks at the time, but times move on and although the story has been fleshed out a bit, and has all be enhanced orchestrally, the music sounds dated - I've managed to listen to it once or twice all the way through, but I think I'm just going to consign it to a poistion somewhere at the back of my CD collection . We were playing the White Rabbit in San Antonio. We were supposed to play after Cinderleaf, a pretty big band in SA, and really cool guys, on the main stage. They had a big crowd, and I'm sure we could have won a bunch of new fans from their crowd. Here's where it gets shitty. The booking guy, Chris, had arranged for a record exec to come hear Cinderleaf (so he says). He also wanted the exec to be able to hear us, but Chris didn't want the guy to wait the 20 minutes between bands. So he bumped us to the jam room, a little room in the back of the club with a shit PA, so we would be playing as soon as Cinderleaf finished, and chris could usher the guy back to hear us right away. Well, the record guy never showed up, we went on earlier than we told people, so we didn't have a very big crowd, and we didn't get to play for Cinderleaf's crowd. Needless to say, that really sucked. On a lighter note, last night we had one of the best shows of our career. It was our first weekend gig in Austin, so we were pumped. We had a pretty decent crowd, and we fuckin' rocked the house! We had a pretty short set, so we kept it to our harder, higher energy songs. I had a blast. It was the best performance of my life; I've never gotten THAT into the music and performance.
