I worked at my college radio station, and I don' think I was doing a progressive rock show yet, I was headlong into Rush at the time and Rush was the only thing in my life. I was actually on The national Midnight star, the ytsejam of rush, and I heard some mentions of DT, but paid that little attention, since you can't make judgements on words, and being a poor bitch at the time, I didn't want to risk money I didn't have on a band unheard. So, I had friends in the college station who did a metal show, but never really listened. I like metal, grew up on a lot of Maiden, Metalica, Ozzie, ac/dc, Def Leopard, and others like Motley Crew. But I never really got heavy into it. I had heard Caught in a Web on my friend's heavy metal show, but dismissed it. While they had told me a lot about DT, I just didn't understand, since I hadn't heard anything I thought was outstanding. One day, I am in the car with my friend, and we were flipping around the stations and on a whim, we put on the college station and I landed in the midst of a drum solo. My first thought was, a rush bootleg? Then I listened, and the drums were wilder, crazier, more intense, as if Neil Peart was on crack. I was totally amazed. I thought, who is this that sounds like neil? Then they kicked back into the song, and I said, this is not Rush, what the fuck is this? I listened more. I instantly loved it. A band that was more crazy than rush. I thought I would never see the day. I forced my friend to pull over and I called the station and demanded to know what the band was. When I was enlightened, I immediately went to the closest mom and pop record store, (this was 1995, mind you), and bought Awake, Images and Words, and WDADU, which was an import at the time. I put them in the CD player at home and immediately loved Take the Time and Metropolis. DT totally revitalized my keyboard playing and was the catalyst for my discovery of Yes, Genesis, ELP and other prog bands, and helped me build myself into a total prog loving nutcase. I still am not the biggest metal fan in the world, but prog metal is very very nice. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Apr 1999 21:53:58 EDT From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: Depressing Music Message-ID: =09=09Ok, I wanted some suggestions from everyone on a style of=20 music that just makes my ears cry with delight, DEPRESSING MUSIC. Eddie is no longer in the band, and neither are the Stine brothers (scott and brett). They're now a 4 piece, and they _are_ working on the new album. It's about half way recorded. I know Derek has a few more bass tracks to put down, and Eddie (Head) is working with the new singer (his name is Vince) on the vocal tracks. I've only heard about a minute or so on the telephopne, but it sounds *real* promising. They're no longer on Shrapnel, either (thank fucking god for that) so they'll be looking for a label once the album is done. Yes, I'll be hosting and running the official site. It's about half way done as well - I'm awating the band's imput on a few matters, but the whole first album is gonna be on the website as Real Audio and low-quality mp3s. Solitude Aeturnus: ok i know this may seem like propaganda coming from me but i must say that this band is top notch when it comes to making great depressive doomy music with great lyrics and one of the best singers...ever (this guy has been described as sounding a bit like john arch on some songs and can do a perfect dio impersonation). technically, the guitarists are competent with well rounded solo's, and the drummer knows how to make his way around the kit. i would suggest "Through the Darkest Hour" as the album to start with. "Adagio" is also very good. if you can find either of their first two (as they have been out of print for some time) snatch them up real quick as they are imo, the best ones. (check out the link below for more info) Candlemass and Memento Mori are the next two bands i would suggest...im not going to write too much here since i have written so much already, but candlemass was the band that started much of the 90's doom metal scene and they too excell in your requests. Memento Mori are basically the candlemass singer (on all but 2 albums) with a much more progressive/technical attack. hope that helps vcoabnormalgutoxmvcmoaimvckdudbenfibhsncjfpsncngobmznl s d f Jim Lenart Solitude Aeturnus Official site: m s "Sorrowed" www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/ s l icq:25717769 Palladium/5795/solitude.html v h a pckeisomnhclepswmnqcoepmcnwodndlaoenbgzquamlgosmickdis -with April, and the beggining of spring, the season of renewal and growth is finally upon us. lets take the time to really charish all of nature's gracious gifts with a small token of our appreciation. with this in mind i have chosen to include Cannible Corpse song titles within all of my topics. _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. Of course, Peart makes some vast presuppositions in his discussion of freewill; he automatically assumes that human autonomy precludes the idea that anything, any being, could transcend time (and thus all of reality, past and future, could already be complete). In fact, the central issue is really that of time (using the term "all preordained" as Peart does assumes that time is unidirectional and absolute). All I'm really trying to say is that the lyrics to this song "bite off more than they can chew"--but what can you expect from a short song tackling a subject as complex as free will? BTW, I agree with you, William, sorry about the rambling. And hey, either way, Freewill is still an awesome song :-) And yeah, Shadow Gallery's ideas do seem a bit different from most of the rock scene, but I don't really listen to SG for their lyrics--they're pretty pretentious, even for prog.
